To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live, send it to a YouTube encoder stream using software or a hardware encoder that can repeat the video file. YouTube Studio creates the live event and supplies its stream URL and key; the encoder handles playback and sending the video. The repeat control depends on the encoder you choose.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • A prerecorded video file available to the encoder, with its audio checked and ready to play continuously.
  • An encoder that can repeat or loop the file. YouTube does not provide one universal control for looping a local video; check the documentation for your chosen encoder.
  • A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total bitrate; see its streaming tips.

Choose a software or hardware encoder

A software encoder is a computer program, while a hardware encoder is a standalone device. Either can be used for an encoder-based live stream if it supports your source and required playback behavior. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but dedicated hardware is not required for this basic workflow. Compare the options by setup complexity, production requirements, loop controls, reliability needs, and cost; availability of a repeat function is specific to the encoder.

Set up and start the looping stream

  1. Enable live streaming. Confirm your channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements and activate live streaming in advance. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
  2. Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule a live stream using the encoder option. YouTube’s instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Copy the connection details into the encoder. Use the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Treat the key as a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream. YouTube explains stream-key settings in Manage live stream settings.
  4. Load the video and turn on repeat. Select the prerecorded file in the encoder and enable its repeat, loop, or equivalent playback option. Confirm the source begins again after it reaches the end. The exact control varies by encoder; YouTube Studio does not universally repeat a local file for you.
  5. Set the encoder’s video output. YouTube recommends RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264 and constant bitrate (CBR) among its encoder guidance. Set a keyframe interval of two seconds where possible; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Choose a resolution and bitrate suited to the source and your upload connection rather than assuming higher settings will improve a lower-quality file. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current recommendations.
  6. Check the preview before going live. Start the encoder, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Test representative motion and audio, not just a static opening frame. Confirm the audio is present and at an appropriate level, the picture is stable, and the loop behaves as expected. YouTube’s encoder guidance and live-streaming tips cover setup and monitoring.
  7. Monitor the event. Keep an eye on stream health and audio/video quality while the encoder runs. The connection needs enough upload capacity for the total bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
  8. End the broadcast deliberately. End the event in YouTube and stop the encoder when the stream is finished. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its cited guidance does not establish the same archive behavior for longer streams.

Copyright and channel considerations

Looping a video does not change the rights or YouTube policies that apply to its contents. Use footage, music, narration, and other material you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current rules before broadcasting. A live stream is not automatically suitable for monetization merely because it is available continuously; assess the channel and the material against the policies that apply to your account. Do not assume that repeating the same recording makes it original or grants permission to use third-party content.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The stream will not start: Check that live streaming is enabled and the channel is eligible. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours. Confirm the event’s stream URL and key were copied correctly and the encoder is connected to that event.
  • The video plays once and stops: The encoder’s repeat control may be off or unavailable for the selected source type. Enable its loop option, choose a compatible playback source, and verify the restart before going live.
  • The preview is blank or the stream is offline: Check that the encoder is sending to the correct stream URL with the matching key, then confirm it is actively outputting the selected file. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
  • The picture stutters or the connection is unstable: Check stream health and compare the total bitrate with actual upload capacity. Reduce bitrate or output demands if needed, while preserving the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
  • The picture or audio does not match expectations: Test the file in advance and review encoder output settings, source frame rate, audio selection, and levels. YouTube recommends H.264, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds).
  • The archive is missing: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on that statement for a longer broadcast; plan how to retain the original recording independently.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the YouTube stream to continue without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running with your computer off, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
