How to Make a Dark-Screen Rain Sounds Stream for Sleeping on YouTube

To make a dark-screen rain stream on YouTube, use OBS Studio to show a black or dark image while playing a rain recording as a looping media source, then send the scene to YouTube with the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Use rain audio you created or have permission to use, and preview the stream before making it public.

Before you start

  • A computer with OBS Studio and an internet connection. You do not need to buy a new computer, microphone, capture device, or physical media for this setup.
  • A rain recording you created or whose license explicitly covers YouTube live streaming and any replay you plan to keep.
  • A black image, a dark still image, or OBS’s Color Source for a plain black screen.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. First-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours.

YouTube’s exact interface labels can change, and OBS controls may differ by version and operating system. The OBS Project’s Media Sources and Sources Guide documentation is dated January 11, 2022; check your installed version if a control is named or arranged differently.

Build the dark-screen rain scene in OBS

1. Add the dark visual

  1. Open OBS and select or create a scene in the Scenes panel.
  2. In Sources, choose the add button. Add an Image source and select a black or dark still image, or choose Color Source and set it to black.
  3. Make sure the source fills the canvas. A plain black screen is sufficient; sleep ambience does not require a special YouTube format.

2. Add and loop the rain recording

  1. In Sources, choose the add button and select Media Source.
  2. Name the source, enable the option to select a local file, and choose your rain recording. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among supported audio formats.
  3. Enable Loop so playback starts again when the file ends. If you use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist instead, VLC must be installed; that source also has a Loop Playlist option.
  4. Watch the OBS audio mixer while the file plays. Confirm the meter responds and listen to the output through the available monitoring option before you go live.

A single finite recording with Loop enabled is the simplest arrangement. A playlist can provide variety, but check the order and transitions in advance. Whichever approach you choose, make sure you have rights to every track in the stream and replay.

Connect OBS to YouTube

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live to enter Live Control Room. Create an immediate stream, or schedule one under Manage if you want advance promotion and reminders.
  2. In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the YouTube service, and enter the server URL and stream key in the corresponding fields. If OBS offers an account connection instead, use the available setup and verify that the intended stream appears in Live Control Room.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If someone obtains it, reset it in Live Control Room.
  4. Start streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, check the picture and sound, then click Go live. For an immediate stream, follow the live-control prompt after the preview is ready.
  5. Check that the image is dark, the rain is audible at a suitable level, and playback repeats as expected. A short private or unlisted test is a practical way to check the whole route before a longer session.

YouTube recommends checking the preview and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Do not assume the stream is working just because OBS says it is sending: confirm it in Live Control Room and, when possible, listen from a separate device.

Choose original audio and understand YouTube’s rights checks

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can lead to a warning, interruption, or termination if it persists. Even if you have a license, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel in Content ID to prevent a live interruption. YouTube’s live-stream terms make the content provider responsible for having the necessary rights, including music licensing rights.

  • Use recordings you made yourself, or secure permission that explicitly covers livestreaming on YouTube and the archived replay.
  • Keep a copy of licenses or written permissions. Confirm whether they cover commercial use if you plan to monetize.
  • If a licensed track is still claimed or interrupted, contact the rights holder about allowing your channel in Content ID; a license alone may not stop an automated live match.
  • Do not assume that a sound labeled “free” or “royalty-free” is cleared for every use. Check the actual license terms.

Monetization and the replay

Monetization is not automatic. YouTube’s channel monetization policies also apply to live streams. Its policy update dated July 15, 2025 describes repetitive or mass-produced material as inauthentic content; examples include similar uploads with little variation and image slideshows with minimal narrative, commentary, or educational value. A minimally varied rain loop is not guaranteed to qualify for monetization. Original audio and a distinctive presentation may make the work more clearly your own, but that is not a promise of eligibility.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Decide whether to retain or publish the replay, and verify that the archive has the expected picture and sound before relying on it. That archive rule does not guarantee that every stream will be saved successfully in every circumstance, and YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a preferred duration for sleep ambience.

Choose the setup that fits your stream

Choice Use it when Trade-off or check
OBS Media Source with one recording You want a straightforward dark screen with repeating rain. Enable Loop and test the transition at the end of the file.
OBS VLC Video source with a playlist You want several files to play in sequence. VLC must be installed; verify the playlist and Loop Playlist behavior.
Black Color Source You want a plain black visual without preparing an image. It is visually simple; it does not itself provide audio.
Dark still image You want a specific nighttime visual rather than a flat black field. Check that it fills the canvas and that you have permission to use it.
Original rain recording You made and control the audio. Keep the original project or files in case you need to document ownership.
Licensed recording You have a license for the intended live and replay uses. The rights holder may still need to allowlist your channel in Content ID.
Immediate stream You are ready to go live now. Check the preview before starting the public broadcast.
Scheduled stream You want to share a watch page in advance. Start OBS and wait for the scheduled stream’s preview before clicking Go live.

Troubleshooting

The stream key is rejected or the stream does not appear

  • Confirm that you copied the current URL and key from the intended stream in Live Control Room and placed them in the matching OBS fields.
  • Check that livestreaming is enabled for the channel. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, and YouTube’s eligibility rules include verification and no restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  • If you suspect the key was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS.

The picture is dark, but there is no rain sound

  • Check that the Media Source points to the correct file and that playback has started.
  • Look for movement on the source’s audio meter in OBS. If there is none, verify the file opens locally and is in a supported format such as MP3, AAC, OGG, or WAV.
  • Check that the source is not muted and that the correct audio track is enabled for streaming.

The audio stops when the recording ends

  • Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop.
  • For a VLC playlist, confirm VLC is installed and Loop Playlist is enabled. Test through at least one file transition before starting a long stream.

YouTube interrupts the stream or displays a copyright warning

  • Identify the matched audio or visual material in YouTube’s notice.
  • Remove material you do not have rights to use. If you have a valid license, ask the rights holder whether your channel can be allowlisted in Content ID.
  • Do not treat a successful test as proof that a recording is cleared; live scanning can identify third-party material during the broadcast.

The replay is missing or incomplete

  • Check whether the stream ran for under 12 hours, YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition.
  • Look in YouTube Studio for the stream’s archive and confirm its processing status. Keep a local copy of your source files and do not rely on the replay as your only copy.
