To make a commercial video, start with one audience, one offer, and one action you want viewers to take. Build a short script around a clear benefit, plan shots that show the product or service, record clean audio, edit for the intended placement, and check claims and disclosures before publishing.
1. Write a one-page brief
Set the direction before choosing equipment or filming. A useful brief records:
- Audience: Who should recognize themselves in the video?
- Need: What problem, desire, or decision does the offer address?
- Offer and message: What are you advertising, and what is the single main point viewers should remember?
- Action: What should viewers do next—visit a page, request information, or learn more?
- Placement: Where will the video appear? The destination affects length, framing, aspect ratio, and delivery requirements.
- Constraints: Note required brand elements, rights and permissions, schedule, available crew, and production cost.
- Success measure: Choose a measure that fits the campaign objective; there is no universal metric or budget that applies to every commercial.
Keep the brief focused. A video that tries to address several audiences or deliver several unrelated messages is harder to follow.
2. Find the idea and write the script
Open with something viewers can understand quickly
Begin with a memorable image, a relevant question, a problem, or a demonstration. For YouTube advertising, Google’s production guide recommends using two or more shots in the first five seconds as a creative approach. It is a platform-specific recommendation, not a guarantee of performance or a universal rule for every placement. The guide also prints the figure that 95% of YouTube videos have sound on; that is the guide’s figure, not an independently validated measurement here. Google’s YouTube ad production guide

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make the benefit and brand clear
Build one simple story around a benefit the intended audience can understand. Show or explain what the product or service does, and include the brand naturally rather than saving all identification for a final logo card. End with one specific action that matches the brief.
Check claims before they become dialogue or text
Review objective claims while drafting, not just after editing. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission says advertisers need a reasonable basis for claims before an ad runs; the evidence appropriate to support a claim depends on the claim itself. Health and safety claims generally call for competent and reliable scientific evidence under the FTC’s small-business guidance. FTC advertising FAQ for small businesses
3. Plan the shoot
Turn the script into a shot list and schedule. For each story beat, decide what the viewer needs to see and hear.

- List locations, talent, permissions, props, wardrobe, product demonstrations, and any voiceover.
- Plan close-ups of the product and talent, plus B-roll that can cover edits or clarify the story.
- Choose set, wardrobe, and props with enough contrast for the subject and product to read clearly.
- Plan lighting and sound capture. Decide where dialogue or voiceover will be recorded and how you will reduce distracting noise.
- Record alternate openings and calls to action if time permits; they give you options for the edit.
- Make a simple backup plan for a location, prop, or recording problem that could interrupt the shoot.
Google’s guide recommends tight product and talent shots, good lighting, early audio, contrast, and extra footage for alternate cuts. These are production suggestions, not promises of ad results. The right camera, crew size, and editing application depend on the placement, required image and sound quality, available skills, schedule, rights, and total cost; the cited material does not establish a required model or minimum crew.
4. Capture usable picture and sound
- Record the essential story beats first. Capture the opening, product or service in use, brand references, and the call to action before optional coverage.
- Get coverage for the edit. Film close-ups, alternate takes, and relevant B-roll. Hold shots long enough to give the editor usable handles before and after the action.
- Capture clear speech. Record clean dialogue or voiceover and useful natural sound. Listen for noise and check levels during the shoot rather than discovering a problem during editing.
- Check the image on set. Review framing, exposure, focus, lighting, and whether faces and important product details remain legible on a small screen.
- Record a clean CTA take. Make sure the spoken and visual next step matches the destination in the brief.
Capture alternate opening or CTA performances when practical. More footage is useful only when it supports the story or gives the edit a real choice.
5. Edit versions for the intended placement
Choose one clear narrative from the footage. Remove confusing or redundant moments, make dialogue easy to hear over music, and keep on-screen text readable at phone size. Finish with the next step you promised in the script.

Check crops, text, and the call to action
Make versions for placements actually in scope instead of assuming one export will suit every screen. Keep important faces and text within safe areas, inspect each crop, and verify that the CTA remains visible and understandable. Watch the rough cut on a mobile device; for a YouTube ad, Google’s guide also suggests using Google Ads Preview.
Use YouTube export guidance as a starting point
For YouTube output, Google’s guide recommends MP4, H.264 video, and AAC-LC audio. Its example SDR bitrates are 35–45 Mbps for 4K at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. It lists 16:9, vertical, and square formats as possible. These are recommendations in a YouTube-focused guide, not requirements for every platform or placement; check the current delivery specifications for the destination before export. Make qualifications and disclosures understandable
Where a disclosure is needed, make it clear and conspicuous, close to the claim it qualifies, and understandable to the intended audience. For endorsements in video, the FTC says a disclosure should appear in the video itself, not only in its description. Viewers may miss an audio-only or visual-only notice, so using both can improve notice. Use plain language and place it where viewers can see and understand it. Declare paid promotion on YouTube when applicable
YouTube asks creators to declare paid placements, endorsements, sponsorships, and other commercial relationships through its paid-promotion workflow. A platform label does not necessarily meet every legal disclosure duty. Follow the applicable requirements for the deal and jurisdiction. YouTube paid-promotion help

Publish the version made for the selected placement. Before launch, check that the destination works, the CTA points viewers to the intended next step, and the final export plays correctly with its sound and captions. Compare results with the objective and measure in the brief.

If you test alternate openings or calls to action, keep the comparison interpretable by changing a manageable number of elements. Results depend on the audience and placement; Google’s guide recommends capturing varied close-ups to support creative testing on YouTube, but it does not establish a universal test duration or performance benchmark.
