To switch prerecorded videos during one continuous 4K 60fps YouTube Live broadcast, keep one encoder connected to YouTube and change the media source it sends. In OBS, prepare the playlist items as media sources or scenes, then use a short transition to soften the visible cut. That can make a handoff look smoother, but it does not guarantee gapless video or audio: test the actual files and sequence in an unlisted rehearsal before going live.

What “seamless” means in a YouTube Live playlist

YouTube Live receives a feed from an encoder. The encoder sends video to YouTube using a server URL and stream key; changing the encoder’s media input while its YouTube output stays active can keep the broadcast running between playlist items. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes connecting and starting the encoder, then checking the preview before going live, but does not document an OBS playlist-switch recipe or promise gapless file changes. YouTube’s encoder setup guide

There are two separate jobs at each handoff:

  • Visual transition: A brief fade or scene transition can conceal a hard picture cut.
  • Media continuity: The outgoing file must finish cleanly and the next file must begin without an unwanted pause, black frame, or audio break. A video fade cannot fix an audio gap or a source that takes time to initialize.

Plan for a clean-looking transition, but treat truly gapless audio and video as something to verify on your setup, not a feature guaranteed by YouTube or OBS.

Prepare the YouTube broadcast and protect its stream key

  1. Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Set the title, visibility, and other event details there.
  2. Copy the connection details. In the stream settings, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s password; keep it private and do not include it in screenshots or share it. YouTube’s live stream settings guide
  3. Keep the encoder session running at transitions. Start the encoder and confirm its feed appears in the Live Control Room preview. Switch media inside the encoder rather than ending the broadcast at each file boundary.

Build and rehearse the playlist in OBS

OBS can be set up with media sources or scenes for the playlist items. This is a practical workflow, not a YouTube-validated automated-playlist recipe; confirm the exact playback behavior in your OBS version with the files you intend to use.

  1. Set a consistent output. Configure OBS for 3840 × 2160 (2160p), 60 fps if your computer and upload connection can sustain it. Match the encoder output to the target stream settings and check that each source displays correctly on the canvas.
  2. Add each item. Create a media source for each video, or create scenes that contain the corresponding media source. Give each source or scene a recognizable name and arrange the items in the intended order. Verify file duration, video resolution, frame rate, audio track, and playback from beginning to end.
  3. Choose the transition. Configure a short fade or another suitable scene transition for visual changes. A fade softens the picture change; it is not a guarantee that the outgoing file’s last frame and the incoming file’s first frame are adjacent in the encoded stream.
  4. Test the handoffs, including audio. Run the full sequence with the same sources and output settings you plan to use. Listen at each boundary for silence, clicks, overlapping sound, or an abrupt change in level. Watch for black frames, delayed source startup, or a frame-rate mismatch.
  5. Prepare a fallback. Keep a slate or fallback scene ready, and check that the next file can start before the current one ends. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and checking local archive integrity as part of event preparation. YouTube’s live streaming tips

Set the encoder for 4K 60fps

YouTube’s current encoder settings list a recommended H.264 bitrate of 35 Mbps for 2160p at 60 fps. For AV1 or H.265 at that resolution and frame rate, the listed range is 10–40 Mbps. These are YouTube’s encoder settings, not a guarantee that a particular computer or home upload connection can sustain a stable stream. Match bitrate to the codec you use and judge the result by the encoder and YouTube stream-health indicators during a test. YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

  • Use a stable wired connection when practical, and leave upload capacity beyond the video bitrate for normal network variation and other traffic.
  • Check that the selected encoder can sustain 4K60 output under load; watch for dropped frames, rendering or encoding overload, and stream-health warnings.
  • YouTube says the low-latency option is unavailable for 4K; 4K streaming is optimized for normal latency.
  • HDR is optional, not a requirement for 4K or for switching playlist items. YouTube documents HDR streaming with H.265/HEVC and an OBS HDR workflow from version 30.1 with a suitable HDR source and specified encoder and color settings. YouTube’s HDR streaming guide

Choose an ingestion protocol that fits the setup

RTMP/RTMPS provides a continuous-feed option. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency; YouTube’s documentation says an HLS rolling playlist must have no more than 5 outstanding segments. Use HLS only if your encoder workflow calls for it and supports YouTube’s requirements. For a typical OBS playlist handoff, the main goal is to keep the encoder’s YouTube output connected while changing the media it sends. YouTube’s HLS setup guide

Run a preflight before the scheduled stream

YouTube recommends configuring the stream at least 2 hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it begins. Its checklist also calls for checking the preview, testing failover, and monitoring picture and sound continuously. YouTube’s live streaming tips

  1. Start the encoder early enough to inspect the YouTube preview before the event begins.
  2. Play the entire sequence, or at minimum test every distinct type of handoff, in an unlisted or private rehearsal.
  3. Check the audio and video at each boundary, along with encoder load, dropped frames, and YouTube stream health.
  4. Confirm your fallback scene or slate works and that you know how to recover if the encoder or connection fails.
  5. Monitor the live broadcast during the event rather than assuming that a successful preview guarantees every later transition.

Check rights and archive behavior

Make sure you have the rights needed to livestream every video and audio item. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance warns creators to ensure promotional trailers do not infringe rights; the same rights concern applies to playlist material. YouTube’s live stream settings guide

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. Do not assume that an archive will be created for a longer broadcast; plan local recording and verify that the recording is intact if you need a copy. YouTube’s encoder guide

Troubleshoot black screens, gaps, and unstable 4K

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Black frame between items The outgoing source ended before the incoming source was ready, or a scene/source transition exposed an empty canvas. Rehearse the exact boundary; confirm the next source loads and displays before the handoff; keep a fallback scene ready.
Audio gap or click The files have different audio endings or beginnings, a source starts late, or the handoff interrupts audio even though the picture fades. Listen to the boundary in the actual output; inspect the file audio tracks and timing; adjust the transition or prepare the files for a cleaner boundary.
Picture stutters or encoder overloads The computer cannot sustain the selected 4K60 encoding workload, or the upload connection is unstable. Check encoder overload and dropped-frame indicators; confirm the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. If needed, reduce output demands rather than relying on the bitrate recommendation alone.
YouTube preview does not appear The encoder may not be connected with the correct server URL and stream key, or its output may not have started. Recheck the Live Control Room connection details and encoder fields, then start the encoder and wait for preview.
Long delay before viewers see the stream 4K does not offer YouTube’s low-latency option; HLS also has higher latency than a continuous RTMP feed. Choose the supported protocol and latency trade-off that fits the event, and do not expect a playlist transition to remove delivery latency.
