OBS Automatic Reconnect can retry a YouTube connection after an output disconnects, but it does not restart OBS after the application crashes—and neither OBS nor YouTube documentation promises that a VLC playlist will reopen at the exact track and timestamp it had reached. To recover a 24/7 lofi stream, handle three separate failures: the encoder connection dropping, OBS exiting, and the playlist’s playback position after OBS restarts.
First, separate a dropped connection from an OBS crash
If OBS remains open but loses its connection to YouTube, Automatic Reconnect may retry the output. If the OBS process terminates, that feature cannot relaunch it. And even if OBS starts again, playlist looping alone does not establish that the source will restore its previous item or timestamp.
These are distinct recovery goals: restoring an encoder connection, restarting the application, and continuing playback at a particular point. The OBS output and media-source documentation describes reconnect and playlist controls, but does not promise end-to-end recovery across all three. OBS streaming guidance and OBS media-source guidance explain the relevant controls.
Configure OBS to retry a disconnected output
- In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and find Automatic Reconnect. Enable it and review the retry delay and maximum retry count available in your installed release. OBS labels and controls can vary by version.
- Apply the setting, then confirm that the active output supports reconnect behavior. OBS documents retry intervals that increase between attempts for supported outputs; this setting addresses a dropped output connection, not a closed or crashed OBS process. See OBS’s streaming reference.
- Test by disconnecting the network while leaving OBS open. Confirm whether OBS retries and whether YouTube receives the feed again. This tests connection recovery only.
Set up a looping lofi playlist
- Install VLC if the VLC Video Source is missing. OBS requires VLC for this source, and a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS media-source documentation.
- In the scene that carries the stream, add a VLC Video Source and add the lofi video files in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist. For a stable, ordered rotation, leave Shuffle Playlist disabled.
- Choose the source’s visibility behavior intentionally. Verify that the VLC source is visible in the scene used for streaming, and that changing or switching scenes will not hide it unexpectedly.
- Start a private or otherwise non-public test and confirm that the playlist advances through multiple items and loops as intended.
These controls make a playlist repeat; they do not document checkpointing of the current item or playback time. After OBS restarts, the source may not pick up at the former timestamp. Treat exact resume behavior as something to verify on your installed OBS/VLC setup, not as a guaranteed effect of enabling Loop Playlist.

Restart OBS after the process exits
OBS does not restart itself through Automatic Reconnect. To bring it back after a process crash, use an operating-system process supervisor or scheduled restart mechanism configured to launch OBS again. This is an external recovery arrangement, not an OBS feature.
- Configure the supervisor to start the correct OBS installation with the intended profile and scene collection. If your setup depends on command-line options, use the options appropriate to your installed version and verify them before relying on unattended recovery.
- Set the supervisor to detect that OBS has exited and attempt a restart. Avoid an aggressive restart loop: repeated launches can obscure the original fault or create competing instances.
- After a restart, confirm that OBS opened the intended scene and profile and that the streaming output actually began. Starting the application is not proof that YouTube is receiving a live feed.
- Run a controlled test by terminating OBS outright, then observe the restarted application, its VLC source, and YouTube’s broadcast or event state.
A process supervisor can relaunch OBS, but it does not by itself restore VLC’s previous playlist position or guarantee that the same YouTube broadcast continues.

Use YouTube’s stream key and event controls carefully
A stream key is the credential and destination information the encoder uses to send the feed. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as confidential, and use a reusable custom key if that suits your workflow. YouTube also offers auto-start and auto-stop controls when enabled; these govern starting or stopping the stream workflow, not restoration of playlist state. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
After OBS comes back, inspect YouTube Studio’s live control room or event state rather than assuming the old broadcast has resumed. YouTube’s documentation does not establish a universal recovery duration or guarantee that every event remains available after an encoder crash. Whether the restarted encoder attaches to the same event depends on the event and settings in use.

If exact playlist continuation matters
Design for playback state to survive a process restart. That could mean using a playback arrangement that persists the current file and timestamp, or a restart workflow that records the item and position and restores them. This is a design requirement, not a documented built-in OBS guarantee for VLC playlist position. Test it with the exact media files, source configuration, and restart method you intend to use.
If exact continuation is not essential, a simpler recovery target may be adequate: restart OBS, confirm a valid feed reaches YouTube, and allow the playlist to begin or continue according to the behavior your test established. Be explicit about which outcome your channel needs.

Test both failure paths before relying on the stream
- Network interruption: Leave OBS running, disconnect its network path, and check whether Automatic Reconnect retries and the YouTube feed returns.
- Application crash: Terminate OBS, verify that the external supervisor restarts it, and check that the intended scene and output are active.
- Playlist state: Note the file and approximate timestamp before termination, then check the first file and position after restart. Repeat the test; do not infer reliable restoration from one successful restart.
- YouTube state: Check whether the expected event or broadcast is live and receiving data after each recovery path.
- Non-public testing: Use a private or otherwise non-public workflow appropriate to your channel while validating behavior.
Passing the network test does not prove crash recovery. Passing the crash test does not prove exact playlist-position restoration. Treat a continuous YouTube broadcast and resuming the same playlist timestamp as separate requirements.
