First decide what “resume at the right point” means. A YouTube viewer can pause and resume within the live DVR window; that does not restore a broadcaster’s nature video to its pre-outage file position. To control what happens after a connection drops, identify the source, encoder, and recovery behavior, then test the exact setup. There is no universal reconnect setting that guarantees the same result across encoders and platforms.
Choose the recovery behavior you actually need
“Resume” can describe several different outcomes. Decide which one matters before changing settings:
- Continue the source after reconnect: the encoder reconnects and carries on from wherever a prerecorded file or playlist has advanced to.
- Replay missed footage: the stream catches up on content that viewers did not receive during the outage. This requires buffering or timeline-aware behavior; simply reconnecting does not establish that it will happen.
- Return to the live edge: viewers see the current point in a live camera feed or loop rather than footage from the outage.
- Let a viewer resume after pausing: this is a platform DVR feature, separate from broadcaster recovery.
These are different requirements. A live camera has no earlier file position to restore unless the workflow records or buffers footage locally. Decide whether you want it to continue showing the current camera view or replay what viewers missed.
Map the source, encoder, and platform
Recovery depends on the specific implementation. Before changing anything, write down what is playing, what sends it, and where it goes:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Source: a prerecorded file, a playlist of recordings, a live camera, or a hosted live input.
- Encoder: the software or service that reads the source and sends the stream.
- Destination: YouTube or another platform, plus the ingest protocol in use.
- Goal: continue from the source’s current position, replay missed content, or resume viewer playback from a pause.
Then check the encoder’s documentation for two distinct behaviors: whether it reconnects automatically after internet service returns, and whether its source keeps advancing while the outgoing connection is down. Also verify how the platform treats a restarted input—whether it remains part of the same broadcast or starts a new one. The available platform documentation does not define these encoder-specific settings for an unspecified setup.
Test with the real source and destination
- Use the same file or playlist, encoder, platform, and reconnect settings intended for the 24/7 stream.
- Start a controlled stream and note the source position and what a viewer sees.
- Interrupt the encoder’s internet connection briefly, then restore it. Do not infer behavior from a normal pause or viewer-side rewind.
- Check whether the encoder reconnects, whether the source advanced, whether the platform continued or restarted the broadcast, and what viewers see after reconnect.
- Repeat the test long enough to cover the relevant outage duration and any playlist or file transitions. If the result is not the intended one, consult the encoder’s instructions for buffering, source-position, and reconnect controls; do not assume DVR changes those controls.
What YouTube DVR does—and does not do
YouTube DVR gives viewers playback control during a live stream. YouTube says viewers can pause and rewind, and that after a viewer resumes playback the live stream continues from where they paused. This is viewer-side playback, not a documented method for returning the broadcaster’s source file to its position before an internet outage. YouTube’s DVR guidance also says viewers cannot seek to before the stream went live.

DVR capability may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and device or app circumstances may impose lower limits, according to YouTube. That matters for a continuous nature stream: do not promise viewers that they can rewind through the full duration of a 24/7 broadcast.
If your YouTube stream uses HLS
HLS is an ingest protocol, not a source-recovery feature. YouTube’s HLS setup documentation specifies 1–4 second transport-stream segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte-range support. Google’s developer guide describes how playlists identify segments that are assembled in stream order. These requirements govern delivery; they do not say how a file-playing encoder should restore its source position after reconnecting. HLS also has higher latency than a continuous RTMP connection.

Use these HLS requirements only if your encoder is actually sending HLS to YouTube. Follow the encoder’s protocol-specific setup instructions, and test an outage with the intended source and settings rather than treating compliant segments as proof of recovery behavior. Other platforms and continuous-stream constraints
Cloudflare Stream DVR is also viewer-side
Cloudflare Stream documents DVR as an opt-in player feature: enable it with dvrEnabled=true. When a viewer pauses, the player can resume from that point instead of jumping to the live edge. This describes the viewer’s playback, not the broadcaster’s source-file position after a connection loss. Cloudflare documents a cap of up to 7,200 segments and performance limitations for DVR-enabled broadcasts longer than three hours. For playback that should switch from an active broadcast to its recording after the broadcast ends, Cloudflare recommends a Video ID URL; Live Input ID playback does not make past broadcasts available after a manifest reload. See Cloudflare’s DVR documentation.

Restart guidance is vendor-specific
Livestream recommends regular restarts to reduce the risk of archive corruption and says its Producer software can restart a stream automatically. Its help page recommends a four-hour interval for that workflow. This is advice for Livestream Producer, not a general requirement for YouTube or every 24/7 encoder. See Livestream’s continuous-stream guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot the result you see
- The encoder reconnects, but the video has jumped ahead: the source may have continued advancing while the connection was down. Check the encoder’s source-position behavior; use buffering or timeline-aware restart behavior only if the encoder documents support for it.
- The stream returns at the live edge, not the missed footage: reconnecting and replaying are separate goals. Verify whether your workflow can retain and resend the missed section; DVR for viewers does not establish that it can.
- The broadcast appears to start over: check how the encoder and destination handle a new connection and whether the platform considers it the same broadcast. The answer is implementation-specific.
- Viewers cannot rewind as far as expected: check whether DVR is enabled and whether the stream’s duration, viewer device, or app limits the available window. YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours.
- An HLS stream fails to ingest correctly: verify the HLS segment duration, rolling playlist, request method, and byte-range behavior against YouTube’s requirements. These correct delivery problems, not source-position recovery.
