To loop one prerecorded radio show in OBS, add it as a Media Source and enable Loop. To play several shows in a repeating sequence, use a VLC Video source, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to YouTube Live, confirm the audio is reaching the output, and test the stream before broadcasting.
Choose the right OBS source
| Need | OBS source | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one file | Media Source | Enable Loop. This is the simpler option for a single local audio or video file. |
| Play several files in sequence and repeat them | VLC Video | Add files to its playlist and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. |
OBS documents local audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, and video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources guide. Its documentation does not establish that one source is universally more reliable than the other.
Loop a single radio show
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene you want to use for the radio stream.
- Add the recording. In the Sources dock, select +, choose Media Source, create a new source, and select the local file.
- Enable looping. In the Media Source properties, check Loop, then confirm the settings. OBS will replay the file after it reaches the end.
- Add visuals if you want them. For an audio-only programme, a static image or logo is optional; looping does not require converting the recording to video. OBS sources higher in the list appear above sources lower in the list, so arrange any image and other scene elements accordingly. See the OBS Sources Guide.
- Check the audio. Start playback and watch the Audio Mixer meters. Listen to the output, not just the local preview, and confirm the intended source is audible.
Loop several shows as a playlist
- Install VLC if needed. The VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In the Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Populate the playlist. Add the show files in the order you want them to play.
- Set playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist. Leave shuffle off for a fixed programme order. Set the source’s visibility behavior to suit your scene changes: a source may stop or continue depending on its visibility setting.
- Test transitions and sound. Let at least one file finish and confirm the next begins, the playlist repeats as expected, and the audio remains present in the output.
OBS describes these controls in its Media Sources documentation.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming ahead of time. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Do not wait until the broadcast is scheduled to turn it on. See Get started with live streaming.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, set up a stream and obtain its connection details. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Set OBS’s stream connection. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if it is available, or enter the stream URL and stream key supplied by YouTube Studio. Treat the stream key as private: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Start a test and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the Live Control Room receives the picture and audio, and review stream health before going public. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking the Audio Mixer and testing the setup; YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers output settings.
Headphones can help you monitor for silence, distortion, or an unintended audio source during a test, but they are optional and do not enable looping.

Protect the broadcast from copyright interruptions
A prerecorded show still needs the relevant rights for a livestream. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for the necessary rights, including music licensing rights, on the provider. That can include rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants.
YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder and trigger a warning; continued third-party content can result in temporary interruption or termination. If you have licensed third-party material, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Having a licence and being allowlisted are separate checks: a licence alone may not prevent an automated interruption. See Copyright issues with live streams.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The show stops at the end | Looping is off, or the playlist loop setting is off. | For one file, open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For several files, check Loop Playlist in VLC Video. |
| VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then check the source menu again. |
| The playlist order changes unexpectedly | Shuffle is enabled. | Turn shuffle off if the programme must play in a fixed order. |
| The scene is visible but silent | The media source may not be playing, or the intended audio is not reaching the output scene. | Start the media, watch the Audio Mixer meters, listen to the output, and check the YouTube preview. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers checking meters and audio devices. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The stream may not be enabled, or the encoder connection details may be incorrect. | Check live-stream eligibility, the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio, and OBS’s stream settings. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours; see YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance. |
| The broadcast is interrupted after it starts | YouTube may have detected third-party content. | Review YouTube’s notice, verify rights, and, for licensed content, ask the owner about Content ID allowlisting. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams. |
