Test Mumbai first, but choose based on a real stream test—not the region name. For a stream sent from India, a nearby server is a sensible starting point. However, the available official guidance does not establish that Mumbai will deliver a more reliable route to YouTube than Singapore for your ISP. Compare equivalent VPS instances by sustained upload, interruptions, YouTube stream health, outbound bandwidth, and total transfer cost.
What the VPS region can—and cannot—change
Your VPS sends the live feed to YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube then transcodes live input for viewers across devices and networks, so the server’s location is not a direct promise of better playback for your audience. The relevant question is whether the VPS can deliver your feed steadily to YouTube from your network route.
AWS recommends ingesting live content in the region closest to the source. That makes Mumbai a reasonable first region to test for an India-origin stream, but it does not prove an end-to-end advantage over Singapore for any particular ISP. Google Cloud lists Mumbai (asia-south1) and Singapore (asia-southeast1) as locations for its Live Stream API; that listing does not establish identical availability or terms for every VPS product or machine type.
How to compare the two locations fairly
Run the same encoder workload from both regions using the same provider, equivalent instance sizes, video, and YouTube settings. Test during representative operating conditions, not just for a brief connection check. If you are using Google Cloud Live Stream API rather than a general-purpose VPS, note that Google says an input endpoint or channel cannot be moved after creation; create a new one in the other location for a location comparison.

- Confirm the actual instance is available. Check the provider’s current inventory, machine type, zone, network tier, and outbound bandwidth limits in both regions. A region listing for one service does not guarantee the same VPS options elsewhere.
- Configure the same stream in each location. Use the same video source and encoder settings, and connect each test to the intended YouTube live stream using its current ingestion endpoint and stream key.
- Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. YouTube’s developer documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL and specifies port 443. Confirm that the encoder, endpoint, and firewall configuration support the connection.
- Test with representative content. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, running a speed test for upload bitrate, and monitoring stream health. Watch for interruptions, packet loss, and YouTube health warnings throughout a sustained test.
- Compare delivery and operating cost together. Record sustained upload behavior, stream-health messages, restarts needed, instance egress limits, projected recurring transfer charges, and how easily you can operate or recover the stream. Choose the region that performs reliably for your setup at a cost you can sustain.
No benchmark establishes a general Mumbai-versus-Singapore winner. Your route from a particular VPS provider to YouTube ingest, and the provider’s instance limits, are decisive details to measure and verify.
Set YouTube encoder bitrate and keyframes
Choose settings for the stream’s actual resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s published H.264 guidance includes these examples:

These are YouTube’s published encoder settings, not measured requirements for a specific VPS. Use constant bitrate (CBR); YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Leave network headroom above the video bitrate rather than selecting an instance whose nominal outbound capacity merely matches it. Audio and protocol overhead also use bandwidth.
Account for instance egress and recurring transfer charges
Do not assume a VPS can sustain an arbitrary bitrate because it has a public IP address. Google Compute Engine bandwidth limits vary by instance, network tier, and traffic routing. Check the exact instance’s outbound limits and the provider’s current terms for your chosen region.

A continuous stream transfers data for as long as it runs. Google Cloud’s network pricing documentation identifies data transfer to YouTube in its pricing information; calculate the charge using your actual billing configuration and current rates instead of assuming egress is free. Compare the recurring transfer cost as well as the instance price when deciding between locations.
Continuous streaming needs recovery planning
Neither a Mumbai nor a Singapore region listing guarantees uninterrupted end-to-end streaming. The cited guidance covers configuration and design considerations, not an uptime guarantee for your full path from VPS through YouTube. Before relying on a continuous stream, test the complete workload, decide how the encoder will be restarted after a failure, and confirm that your operating plan can detect and address YouTube health problems.

- Verify that the stream key and ingestion endpoint are correct and protected.
- Check the VPS’s sustained outbound capability against the selected bitrate, with headroom.
- Monitor YouTube stream health during a representative test.
- Plan for both encoder or instance failure and a dropped YouTube connection.
