How to Loop Multiple Videos in OBS Without a Transition Gap on YouTube

Use an OBS VLC Video Source playlist with Loop Playlist enabled. For cleaner joins, test a combined file in a looping Media Source—OBS does not guarantee gapless playlist transitions.

To loop several clips in OBS, add them to a VLC Video Source playlist and turn on Loop Playlist. This repeats the list, but OBS does not guarantee gapless playback between separate files. If you hear or see a pause at a boundary, join the clips into one continuous file and play it through a Media Source with Loop enabled, then test the actual stream before going live.

Set up a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Without the compatible VLC installation, the VLC Video Source may not appear. See the OBS media sources guide.
  2. Add the playlist source. In your scene, click the + button under Sources and choose VLC Video Source. Add the video files in the sequence you want them to play.
  3. Set the playback options. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed order, and enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the first clip after the last. OBS documents Shuffle Playlist as off by default and Loop Playlist as on by default; check the source properties rather than relying on defaults, since saved settings may differ.
  4. Check the playlist in the preview. Watch and listen through every clip change and the final-to-first loop. Use the exact files and audio you intend to broadcast.

A VLC playlist is the direct way to loop multiple separate videos. Its loop option repeats the playlist; it does not promise that playback will switch files with no black frame, pause, or audio break.

If a clip boundary has a gap

Try one continuous file

If a boundary in the VLC playlist flashes black or interrupts audio, combine the clips into one continuous media file and add it to OBS as a Media Source. Enable that source’s Loop option. OBS documents Media Source as playing local files and replaying a file when playback completes. A single file avoids switching between separate playlist entries, so it is a practical workaround to test—not a guarantee of frame-accurate or sample-accurate continuity.

Test both kinds of boundary: each clip-to-clip join in the combined file, and the end-to-start point where the file loops. The result depends on the actual files and setup; OBS’s documentation does not establish gapless playback for every codec, file pair, operating system, OBS release, or decoder.

Do not confuse media changes with scene transitions

OBS scene transitions, such as Cut or Fade, apply when you switch scenes. A VLC playlist changing from one file to another is a boundary inside a media source. Changing the scene transition to Cut does not establish that playlist playback will be gapless. See the OBS overview and media sources guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live and verify the result

  1. Get the server URL and stream key. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up an encoder stream and retrieve the connection details. Treat the stream key as private: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  2. Enter the details in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the server and stream key as prompted. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the connection flow.
  3. Use settings for your chosen output. YouTube supports encoder streams using software or hardware encoders. Its live encoder settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS, supported codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, recommended two-second keyframes (four seconds maximum), and bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate. Follow the current guidance for your resolution and codec, and ensure your upload capacity can sustain the bitrate. These output settings do not determine whether OBS changes playlist files cleanly.
  4. Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. Confirm the picture and sound there before starting the public broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality; see its streaming tips.
  5. Monitor during the broadcast. Check stream health and listen for breaks after transitions and at the playlist or file loop. A locally clean playback does not prove that every viewer will receive uninterrupted playback.

What viewers experience is not only an OBS setting

There are two distinct checks: whether OBS plays continuously at the source boundary, and whether YouTube delivery and viewer playback remain smooth. YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capture/encoding and viewer playback; its guidance notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. See YouTube’s latency guidance. A clean local join therefore cannot guarantee a seamless experience for every viewer. Verify the preview and monitor stream health rather than treating a playlist loop setting as an end-to-end guarantee.

Troubleshooting OBS playlist gaps

  • VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
  • Clips play in an unexpected order: Check the playlist order and turn off Shuffle Playlist if you need a fixed sequence.
  • The list stops after its final clip: Open the VLC Video Source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
  • A black flash, pause, or audio break occurs between files: Test the boundary locally. If the playlist still interrupts, join the clips into one continuous file and use a looping Media Source; test the joins and the loop point before broadcasting.
  • The stream looks fine locally but buffers for viewers: Check YouTube’s stream health and encoder settings, including bitrate and keyframe interval. Viewer-side buffering and a local media-source gap are separate problems.
