After a Windows update restarts your PC, reopen OBS or your encoder and restore its feed to YouTube; OBS’s automatic reconnect setting does not by itself reopen OBS after a reboot. Then check the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm the preview and stream health, and use Go live if the scheduled event requires it. YouTube does not document a guarantee that the original event or VOD will resume seamlessly, so verify the archive rather than assuming the interrupted and restarted footage will be joined.
Restart the encoder and check the YouTube event
Windows updates may require a restart to finish installing. Once Windows is back, treat the broadcast as interrupted until you have confirmed a working encoder feed and a healthy YouTube preview.
- Let Windows finish updating. Sign in and wait for the desktop and internet connection to become available.
- Open OBS or your encoder. Check that the expected profile and scene collection are loaded. Confirm the game capture, microphone, desktop or game audio, and overlays are present. OBS recommends checking sources and audio meters, then testing settings before a broadcast (OBS Quick Start Guide).
- Verify the YouTube destination and stream key. In YouTube Studio, open the relevant stream’s Live Control Room and check that the encoder is using the correct stream URL and key. The URL directs the encoder’s feed; the key authenticates it. Treat the key like a password (YouTube live stream settings; create a live stream with an encoder).
- Start streaming from the encoder. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm that the actual game image and audio are reaching YouTube, not merely that OBS says it is streaming. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality (YouTube live streaming tips).
- Use Go live if the event calls for it. For a scheduled encoder stream that requires a manual start, wait for the preview and then select Go live in the Live Control Room. Check the current event state before creating another event (YouTube encoder stream workflow).
- Verify the recording afterward. Check YouTube Studio’s Live content and channel archive. If you recorded locally, check that file too. Do not assume YouTube will combine footage from before and after the restart into one VOD.
Reconnect after a dropped connection or a full reboot?

OBS lists Configure Automatic Reconnect among its Advanced settings, but connection recovery is not the same as launching OBS after Windows starts. OBS separately documents a --startstreaming launch parameter and how to add launch parameters to a Windows shortcut; scheduled or other automated launches should also have a working directory set (OBS Studio Overview Guide; OBS launch parameters). If you automate startup, test the full sequence, including a boot where internet access is not ready yet.
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options can allow encoder-driven starting and stopping when enabled, and reused stream settings copy those selections. They do not guarantee that the same live event resumes after a reboot. Check the event’s state in the Live Control Room before starting the encoder (YouTube live stream settings).

Protect the VOD and local recording
- YouTube archive: YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours long, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is an operational threshold, not a promise that separate sessions will be merged (Archive live streams).
- Local backup: YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup and checking that the file is growing during the stream (YouTube archive guidance; live streaming tips). An external SSD is one possible place to keep recordings, but the needed capacity depends on bitrate and recording length.
- DVR is different from a VOD: DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live stream. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; this does not determine whether a post-stream archive exists (Turn on DVR on live streams).
- Separate sessions: YouTube’s published encoder and archive guidance does not establish that footage from before and after a reboot is stitched into one video. Check the resulting archive in Studio.
Troubleshoot a feed that will not return
The key is wrong or rejected
Copy the current key from the stream’s Live Control Room and replace the one in the encoder. Reset it only if necessary; YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a stream key. Keep the key private (YouTube live stream troubleshooting; stream settings).
The encoder is running, but YouTube reports an unhealthy stream
Check the encoder’s errors, local audio and video sources, CPU load, and outbound internet connection. Compare the local recording with the YouTube preview to help identify whether a problem begins at the source or on the way to YouTube. The preview is black or the game is missing
Confirm that OBS has the intended scene selected and that its game capture source is present and pointed at the game. OBS supports Windows Game Capture for 3D games; check the source and test it before going live (OBS Quick Start Guide).
The event looks live, but there is no usable feed
Use the Live Control Room preview and stream health as your decision point. Check the destination and key, then inspect OBS’s output and sources. Avoid repeatedly creating events or exposing and resetting the key without a reason (YouTube live streaming tips; stream settings).

You cannot find the recording
Check both the local recording location and YouTube Studio’s Live content and channel archive. The local file is especially important for a stream over YouTube’s stated 12-hour archive threshold, since YouTube warns such a stream may not be captured (Archive live streams).
Reduce the chance of another update interruption
Schedule Windows restarts outside broadcast windows rather than disabling security updates indefinitely. Microsoft says Windows tries to restart when the device is not in use and offers restart scheduling and active hours to limit automatic restarts during times you use the device. Updates cannot be stopped entirely, though they can be paused temporarily (Windows Update FAQ).

- Check that the local archive file is growing and monitor audio and video during the stream.
- Test OBS settings and sources before a long session; do not assume a boot-time automation will work until you have tested it after a full restart.
