You can livestream a wedding on YouTube with a phone, webcam, or encoder, but first confirm the channel is eligible and activated. Schedule the event, choose how guests will access it, then rehearse at the venue using the actual camera, audio, and internet connection. Assign someone other than the couple to monitor the broadcast and check the replay’s privacy afterward.
Can you livestream a wedding on YouTube?
Yes, if the channel meets YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and the person operating the stream is at least 16. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility several days before the ceremony rather than on the wedding day. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Mobile streaming has an additional threshold: at least 50 subscribers, as well as a verified channel with no recent live-streaming restrictions and live streaming activated. For channels with 50 to 999 subscribers, YouTube may limit the mobile audience size and set the stream archive to private by default; YouTube does not publish a specific audience cap. Check YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements for the current rules.
Choose in advance who owns the channel and who will operate the broadcast. The operator should be able to rehearse, watch the stream and troubleshoot while the couple is occupied.

Choose a streaming method
| Method | Best suited to | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | A simple, single-phone view | Most direct phone route, but requires at least 50 subscribers and the other mobile eligibility conditions. |
| Webcam | A straightforward computer-based setup | Choose a webcam and microphone in YouTube’s live interface. It offers a simple alternative to a phone. |
| Encoder | External cameras or microphones, multiple angles, audio mixing, or added production control | Connects production equipment to YouTube. It takes more setup and benefits from an experienced operator. |
YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary; available equipment may be enough. Choose based on the venue, the sound you need to capture, and the operator’s comfort with the setup. An encoder is useful when you need to bring in external audio or switch camera angles, but it is not mandatory. Details are in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Schedule the event and decide how guests can watch
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the event. For a mobile broadcast, schedule it in the YouTube app. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance explains the available setup options.
- Set visibility before sending the link. A scheduled stream may appear to subscribers as an upcoming event, and viewers can choose to receive a reminder.
- Send the watch link with clear instructions, including the ceremony’s start time and time zone. Test that link with someone who is not signed into the operator’s account.
| Visibility | What it means for guests |
|---|---|
| Public | Broadly viewable and discoverable; suitable if you want anyone to be able to find the stream. |
| Unlisted | Viewers can watch through the link. It is convenient for invited guests, but the link can be forwarded; it is not a guest-by-guest invitation gate or password protection. |
| Private | Access is restricted. Confirm how invited guests will be granted access before relying on this option. |
YouTube lets creators edit privacy settings. If you use an encoder, treat its stream key like a password: the key tells the encoder where to send the feed. Keep it out of public messages and reset it if you think it has been exposed.

Rehearse at the venue before the wedding
A rehearsal reveals problems that a channel check at home cannot: weak signal at the ceremony spot, a camera aimed at the wrong place, or vows that are hard to hear. YouTube recommends an unlisted test stream and checking the preview and the event on watch pages and mobile. Use the same setup and position you plan to use during the ceremony.
- Set up at the intended camera position with the actual phone or camera, microphone or sound feed, and internet connection.
- Start an unlisted test and watch it on a second device. Confirm that the picture is steady, the framing includes the ceremony, and the sound is clear at a useful volume.
- Ask someone outside the operator’s account to open the link and confirm they can watch and hear it.
- For an encoder workflow, YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Check the Live Control Room preview before making the event live, then monitor picture and sound throughout.
- If you are also making a local recording, check that the archive file is growing. A local copy can be useful if the live connection fails.
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee against venue or equipment failure. The platform’s live-streaming tips and filming tips offer additional checks.

Check upload capacity, audio, and camera stability
Test the connection where the stream will originate
For a livestream, upload capacity matters because it carries video from the venue to YouTube. Run a speed test at the exact location and on the connection you will use. YouTube’s planning rule is outbound capacity equal to the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate plus 20%. Download speed alone does not establish that the venue can reliably send the stream. For computer streams, YouTube recommends Ethernet; if you must use Wi-Fi or mobile data, rehearse on that same connection.
Make the ceremony easy to see and hear
For a fixed phone shot, a phone holder or tripod is optional, not a YouTube requirement. Use the rehearsal to confirm that the device will stay framed on the ceremony and will not block guests’ view. If you need audio from the venue’s sound system, have a responsible operator confirm that the feed is intelligible and that the encoder is receiving the intended source. An image that looks fine on the camera display may still produce unclear speech on the stream.

Check music permissions before broadcasting
Music at a wedding can create a streaming problem even when it is part of the ceremony or reception. YouTube lists copyright strikes on an active stream and matches to another copyrighted live broadcast among reasons a channel’s live-streaming ability may be restricted. Its guidance does not determine whether a couple has permission to livestream a particular song in a particular jurisdiction.
Ask the venue, DJ or band, and relevant rights holders about livestream permission before the event. Have a music-free fallback plan if the stream is interrupted. This is a practical precaution, not legal advice. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Monitor the ceremony and check the replay
Put a helper in charge of watching the outgoing stream, checking audio and framing, and responding if the camera shifts or the connection drops. The couple should not have to troubleshoot during the ceremony. For a ceremony, stable playback may matter more than near-instant chat: YouTube offers DVR so viewers can pause or rewind, while lower latency can increase buffering.
After the event, confirm that the stream ended properly, then inspect the archive and its privacy setting in YouTube Studio. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The mobile workflow also creates an archive, whose privacy can be changed or which can be deleted. Archive controls and availability can change, so check the current Studio view rather than assuming the replay has the privacy you intended.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video running as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than broadcast a live ceremony from a camera, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price regardless of quality; StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. Its first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed, so it is not a substitute for broadcasting the ceremony itself. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
