Why does my OBS stream have no audio?
Church PA sound and livestream sound are separate paths. Hearing music in the sanctuary confirms the room can hear it; it does not confirm that the mixer is sending it to the computer, that OBS is routing it to the stream, or that YouTube is delivering it to viewers.
During a representative song, watch the live input indicator in OBS’s Audio Mixer. A meter that falls after a sound stops is normal; its decay is not evidence that audio is still arriving. Look for movement as the music plays, including a quiet passage and a transition.
- No meter movement: trace playback, the selected device and the mixer’s output route before changing stream output settings.
- Meter moves but viewers hear silence: check mute state, filters and the audio track assigned to the stream, then test remotely.
- Meter moves but YouTube shows a warning or interruption: check YouTube Studio and rights status. This is a separate issue from OBS signal routing.
Why can I hear the worship music in church but not on the livestream?
Trace the signal from its source toward the viewer, checking each handoff rather than changing several settings at once.

1. Reproduce the problem during a song
Play a section that includes both full-volume music and the quiet passage where sound disappears. Watch the relevant OBS meter while it plays. This first check tells you whether to troubleshoot upstream of OBS or inside its routing and processing.
2. If the OBS meter is flat, check the path into OBS
- Confirm the music is playing at the intended source, such as the playback computer or mixer channel.
- In OBS, confirm the captured audio device is the one actually connected to the mixer or computer output. The exact device name and control location vary by operating system and OBS version.
- On the mixer, check that the music channel is routed to the output feeding the streaming computer. Inspect the relevant bus, USB send or other connection, as well as the master routing.
- If the device has a monitor or headphone output, listen there to establish whether signal reaches that point. Then check whether OBS receives it.
- In OBS, temporarily disable the affected source’s filters and watch the input indicator again. OBS describes its input meter as measuring after filters but before the fader, so a filter can affect what the meter shows.
If the mixer’s own monitor has sound but OBS does not, focus on the selected capture device, cable or USB route, and mixer send. If the mixer monitor is also silent, resolve playback or channel routing at the source first.

3. If the OBS meter moves, inspect OBS routing and processing
- Make sure the source is not muted in the Audio Mixer.
- Check that the source is assigned to the audio track used by the stream. A meter can move even when that source is not included on the outgoing track.
- Review the source’s filters. Bypass them one at a time during rehearsal and repeat the same quiet passage so you can identify which change matters.
- If the device is added as an Audio Input/Output Capture source in a scene, check whether that same device is also enabled in OBS global audio settings. Capturing one device both ways can produce echo.
OBS controls and labels can vary by version and operating system; follow the signal path and confirm the result rather than relying on a setting name alone.
Why does the music cut out when it gets quiet?
A noise gate can explain this symptom. A gate is designed to reduce audio below its close threshold and reopen when the signal rises above its open threshold. A setting chosen to suppress room noise between spoken words may also cut quiet music or sustained notes.

During rehearsal, bypass the gate on the affected source and play the same quiet passage. If the music returns, tune the gate for the actual music signal or leave it off that source. Do not copy a speech-oriented threshold to a full-band music feed without checking how it behaves.
Also inspect noise suppression and other source filters aimed at speech. Change one filter at a time, compare the same passage, and keep the setup that preserves the music without creating unwanted noise. There is no universal threshold appropriate for every mixer feed and worship mix.

How do I confirm viewers can hear the stream?
- Monitor near the source or mixer, then monitor the signal inside OBS. OBS recommends checking both points and recording a normal session for playback.
- Record a rehearsal and listen back to the recording to check what OBS captured.
- When available, make a private or unlisted stream test. Ask someone at a different location to listen from another device; this checks the delivered stream rather than just the control-room monitor.
- Use headphones or another private output for monitoring. Do not send delayed stream audio back through the sanctuary PA, where it can create an audible duplicate.
Headphones are a monitoring aid, not a fix for a missing signal. For a noisy control room, closed-back isolation may help; also consider comfort for a long service, wired compatibility with the monitoring output and durability.

It can interrupt a stream over third-party content, but do not assume that every silence is a copyright action. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If OBS’s meter continues moving but viewers see a placeholder, interruption or platform warning, inspect the live dashboard in YouTube Studio and the associated copyright notice.

YouTube also says licensed content may still be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A church’s general music license does not by itself establish that a particular live-stream event is cleared. Confirm that the relevant license covers the use and ask the licensor about the channel’s allowlist status. Raising OBS gain will not resolve a platform rights interruption.
When should a church buy an audio interface or new cable?
Identify the failed handoff before buying equipment. A muted mixer send, unsuitable OBS filter, wrong stream track or YouTube interruption will not be fixed by a generic interface. First determine whether the existing mixer already supplies USB audio or another suitable output to the streaming computer.
If the current setup lacks a usable connection, compare an interface’s input type and count with the mixer’s available outputs, confirm computer and operating-system compatibility, and check driver support. Choose cables only after identifying the connector and signal route at both ends. The right choice depends on the installed console and computer; a replacement model cannot be selected responsibly without those details.
