To put hymn lyrics over prerecorded videos in a continuous church YouTube stream, build the video scene in OBS Studio, add the lyrics as a text overlay, and send the finished scene to YouTube with an encoder stream. For one recording, use OBS Media Source with Loop enabled; for a rotating set, use VLC Video Source with a playlist and Loop Playlist. Test the stream in YouTube Studio before relying on it—and confirm that you have rights to the recordings, compositions, and lyric text.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours; this is a setup estimate, not a promise of continuous uptime. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- OBS Studio, which YouTube identifies as open-source video recording and livestreaming software. A standalone hardware encoder is another supported category, but is not required for this OBS workflow. YouTube: Choose your live encoder
- The recorded video or videos, lyric text, and a reliable computer and internet connection for the do-it-yourself setup.
- Permission for the music and lyrics to be used in your intended livestream. Having a copy of a recording or adding lyrics on screen does not by itself establish those rights.
Set up a looping video and lyric overlay in OBS
1. Choose one recording or a playlist
- Open OBS and create a scene for the stream.
- For a single video, add a Media Source, select the local recording, and enable Loop if it should repeat. OBS’s Media Source plays local video and supports looping. OBS: Media Sources
- For multiple recordings, add a VLC Video Source, create a playlist of the files, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source. OBS: VLC Video Source
A loop repeats its source; it does not keep the computer, encoder, network, or YouTube stream running after a failure. Plan for those separately.
2. Add lyrics as visible text
- Add a Text (GDI+) source on Windows or Text (FreeType 2) on macOS and Linux, then enter the lyric text. OBS documents text sources for displaying text in a scene. OBS: Text Sources
- Position and size the words so they remain legible over the footage. Check contrast against both bright and dark parts of the video; a shaded background or outline can help. These are practical layout choices, not a guaranteed design formula.
- Check that the lyrics correspond to the words being sung. If the whole recording is longer than one lyric passage, prepare the text and scene changes needed for the rest rather than assuming a static overlay will stay synchronized.
3. Decide whether you also need captions
A lyric overlay is part of the picture and gives you control over the visual design. Captions are timed text intended to communicate audio accessibly; they are a separate production task. OBS’s VLC source documents a subtitle option, and YouTube supports live captions sent embedded in the video or through supported software. YouTube’s subtitle guidance also covers timed files such as UTF-8 SRT. An overlay does not become a caption track simply because it displays the lyrics. Connect OBS to YouTube and test before going live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder livestream. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder. YouTube: Stream with an encoder
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key as directed by the YouTube workflow. Treat the key like a password: do not display or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Start the OBS stream and check the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room before making the broadcast public. YouTube recommends preparing in advance, previewing, and monitoring audio and video. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- Verify that the picture fills the intended frame, the video loops or advances through the playlist, the lyrics are readable and synchronized, and both audio and video reach YouTube.
- Once the preview is satisfactory, start the broadcast from the YouTube workflow if required. Keep OBS and the computer running for the stream’s duration.
Clear the rights before broadcasting
Lyrics on screen do not clear rights to the hymn composition, lyric text, or recording. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content and may warn the streamer, interrupt the stream, or terminate it when it identifies such content. Even where a third-party owner has licensed use, YouTube says the owner may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID to prevent interruption. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams

YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the broadcaster to hold the necessary rights for worldwide use, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Verify the specific songs, lyric text, recordings, arrangement, territories, platform, and continuous replay with the relevant rights holders or licensors. Do not assume a general church streaming license covers every commercial recording, lyric, or nonstop replay; the available sources do not establish that. YouTube Livestream Terms and Conditions · YouTube: Copyright and fair use
Calling music “free” in a video description does not prevent a Content ID claim. YouTube recommends music that is public domain or used with permission, and points to the YouTube Audio Library and Creator Music subject to their terms and availability. That guidance does not determine whether a particular hymn recording or arrangement is cleared for a church livestream. YouTube: Use music and sound effects from the Audio Library

Keep a do-it-yourself stream operating
OBS’s loop settings handle playback, not around-the-clock reliability. YouTube recommends a reliable network and checking stream quality, but does not promise uninterrupted availability. Assign someone to monitor the computer, encoder, connection, and YouTube preview; decide who will restart the stream and check the loop after a power outage, software problem, or dropped connection. YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream issues
Common problems and fixes
- Livestreaming is not available yet: enable it for the channel and allow for YouTube’s stated first-time setup period, which may take up to 24 hours. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- OBS connects, but YouTube shows no picture or sound: check the selected OBS scene and sources, confirm the right stream key is entered, and inspect the YouTube preview for both audio and video before broadcasting.
- The same video does not repeat: check that Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For a playlist, use VLC Video Source, confirm VLC is installed, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS: Media Sources · OBS: VLC Video Source
- Lyrics are hard to read or out of sync: adjust text size, placement, and contrast in OBS, then check the whole recording in preview. A single static text source may not match lyrics that change during the video.
- YouTube warns about copyrighted material or interrupts the stream: stop and resolve the rights issue with the relevant rights holder or licensor. If permission is in place, ask the owner whether the channel needs Content ID allowlisting; permission alone may not prevent an automated interruption. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams
- The stream stops after a computer, power, or network failure: restore the equipment and connection, reconnect OBS using the current stream key, and verify the YouTube preview before resuming. A playback loop cannot recover a failed encoder or connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube stream of uploaded recordings without leaving a home or church computer running, StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider first: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
