You can run a continuous podcast-style YouTube stream from a Windows desktop by sending an audio-and-video output to YouTube with encoder software. First enable live streaming on an eligible channel, then configure an encoder, test the picture and sound, and monitor the stream while it runs. A single desktop setup is not guaranteed to stay online continuously: power, Windows, the encoder, and your internet connection can all interrupt it.
Check that your channel can go live

Open YouTube Studio and check that live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube requires channel verification, and the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Follow YouTube’s current eligibility guidance at Get started with live streaming.

Choose encoder streaming for a podcast feed that needs a designed visual, overlays, or audio routed from desktop equipment. YouTube’s live streaming tips describe encoder streaming and possible hardware such as microphones and preamps.

Before scheduling an extended run, decide whether your priority is uninterrupted listening or preserving separate, replayable episodes. YouTube documents continuous feeds as a use case, but the archive limits make a single long broadcast a poor substitute for episode-sized recordings.

Set up the Windows encoder and YouTube stream
The exact controls vary by encoder, so do not treat the following as a verified Windows-specific OBS preset. OBS Studio is one possible encoder; check its current Windows installation instructions and system requirements before installing. In the encoder, configure the outgoing audio and video, then connect it to the YouTube stream using the stream details YouTube provides.

Prepare the show output. Choose the podcast audio source and the visual viewers should see, such as a show graphic or other designed scene. Check that the intended audio is routed to the encoder and that the visual is not blank or unintentionally static.

Connect to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use its provided connection details in your encoder. Treat the stream key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP; follow the encoder’s available YouTube connection options.

Choose output quality to match your connection. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance to select a supported resolution and bitrate for your intended output and available upload capacity. There is no one bitrate or resolution that is right for every Windows desktop and internet connection.

Test before going continuous. Send a representative test with the same audio routing, visual, and output settings you plan to use. Check the YouTube preview for picture and sound, then monitor stream health and audio/video quality while the test runs. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming a configured encoder is healthy.

Start the broadcast and keep watch. Start the encoder output and confirm the YouTube broadcast is receiving it. For a desktop-based always-on run, the Windows computer, encoder, power, and network all need to remain available; YouTube’s continuous-feed model does not itself keep a local setup running through an interruption.
Understand continuous feeds, broadcasts, and replays
YouTube’s API distinguishes the incoming media transmission, called a “stream,” from the watchable video event, called a “broadcast.” Its documentation explicitly describes a 24/7 feed and explains that a continuing feed can coexist with a separate broadcast. This describes YouTube’s model, not a promise of uninterrupted operation from a particular PC, encoder, or connection. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams, updated 2026-09-14.
Do not rely on one multi-day live page as a complete podcast archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need the episodes or full program preserved, make a local recording backup. If viewers should be able to find distinct replayable episodes, use shorter broadcasts with episode-level titles instead of one uninterrupted multi-day event. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Protect rights and understand monetization review
Your live content remains subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and you need the rights to transmit the material. Those are separate from eligibility for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy reviews whether channel content is original and authentic, and addresses repetitive or mass-produced content and reused material. For reused content, the policy considers whether it adds significant original commentary, substantial modification, or educational or entertainment value. A continuous loop, ownership of the podcast audio, or permission to use material does not by itself guarantee YouTube Partner Program eligibility; review considers the channel and its content. YouTube’s policy page notes that on 2025-07-15 its former repetitious-content policy was renamed inauthentic content, and separately discusses reused content: YouTube channel monetization policies.
Choose between one feed and episode broadcasts

The archive limit described here comes from YouTube’s archive guidance; whether a stream is captured is not a substitute for keeping your own recording when preservation matters.
Optional audio equipment
A microphone or preamp can be part of an encoder workflow if you are capturing live speech. You do not need to buy expensive equipment simply to begin: YouTube’s creator guidance says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” Upgrade only if your existing setup cannot deliver the voice capture or audio control your show needs. YouTube is not receiving the encoder output: Confirm the encoder is sending to the selected YouTube broadcast and that the connection details match. Keep the stream key private, and use YouTube’s RTMPS option if supported by your encoder.

The preview has no sound or the wrong picture: Check the encoder’s selected audio source and visual output, then run another representative test and inspect the YouTube preview before relying on the broadcast.

Stream health or quality is poor: Revisit the selected resolution and bitrate against your available upload capacity using YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. Test again and monitor stream health rather than raising quality without checking the connection.

The desktop stream stops: Check whether the PC lost power or network, or whether the encoder stopped. A desktop workflow depends on those local components remaining available; YouTube’s continuous-feed documentation does not guarantee a local stream will recover from every interruption.

The live replay is missing or incomplete: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording, or split the programming into shorter broadcasts when episode replays matter.
