How to Keep FFmpeg from Stopping at the End of a YouTube Playlist File

FFmpeg’s loop option repeats one input, not every kind of playlist. Identify your input type and use the right workflow.

If FFmpeg is processing one local video, put -stream_loop -1 before its -i option to repeat that input indefinitely: ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 .... But a “YouTube playlist file” could mean a local list of files or a YouTube playlist URL—those require different workflows. First identify what FFmpeg is actually reading.

Identify what FFmpeg is reading

Look at the input immediately following -i in your command. The fix depends on whether that input is a single media file, a concat-demuxer list, or a YouTube playlist URL.

  • A single local media file, such as input.mp4: use -stream_loop -1 to repeat that input.
  • A local concat-demuxer list: FFmpeg processes the listed files sequentially and stops when it reaches the last entry. That is normal for a finite list.
  • A YouTube playlist URL: use a playlist-aware downloader such as yt-dlp to handle the playlist entries; FFmpeg’s input-loop option is not a substitute.

“Repeat the existing entries” and “notice entries added while the command is running” are also different requirements. The documented loop option covers repeating an input; the documentation cited below does not establish that it makes FFmpeg reread a list file as it changes.

Repeat one local file indefinitely

Put the loop option before the input

Use this pattern, replacing input.mp4 and the output options with your own values:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 ...

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option, with -1 meaning infinite looping. Because it is an input option, place it before the -i it applies to. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

This repeats the specified input; it does not turn a finite list of unrelated inputs into a changing playlist monitor. If you are looping a file through a particular output or streaming setup, retain the rest of your working command and apply the option to the intended input.

Process a local list of files

Understand why a concat list ends

The concat demuxer reads its listed files in sequence. When it reaches the last entry, processing ends because the list is finite. Consult the FFmpeg Formats Documentation for the concat demuxer and its format requirements.

If you want the listed material to play repeatedly, distinguish that goal from looping one media input. The documented -stream_loop -1 behavior applies to an input; do not assume without testing that it will reread a concat list or discover new lines appended to that file while FFmpeg is running. The right approach depends on the exact list format, command, and installed FFmpeg version.

Handle a YouTube playlist URL

A YouTube playlist URL is not the same thing as a local concat-demuxer file. Use a playlist-aware workflow such as yt-dlp to process playlist entries. Its documentation covers playlist handling and --concat-playlist; its FAQ explains that FFmpeg can be used to merge separate audio and video formats downloaded from sites such as YouTube.

That workflow addresses extracting or downloading playlist entries, and may use FFmpeg for merging. It is not equivalent to telling FFmpeg to repeat one local input forever.

Choose the behavior you actually need

Goal Input What to do
Repeat one source indefinitely One local media file Use -stream_loop -1 before the corresponding -i.
Process several files once in sequence Finite concat-demuxer list Use the concat demuxer; reaching the final listed entry ends the sequence.
Work through a YouTube playlist YouTube playlist URL Use a playlist-aware downloader such as yt-dlp; FFmpeg may be used to merge separate audio and video.
Repeat a list or detect new entries added during processing Specific local list format and command required Do not assume input looping rereads a changing list; check behavior with your exact setup.

Troubleshoot when it still stops

  • It reaches the end after one pass: confirm the input is a single media file and that -stream_loop -1 appears before the -i for that file.
  • You passed a concat list to FFmpeg: its entries are processed in sequence, so reaching the final listed file is expected. The loop option is not documented as a way to watch that list for new lines.
  • You passed a YouTube playlist URL directly to FFmpeg: use a playlist-aware tool such as yt-dlp for playlist handling instead of treating the URL as a local file to loop.
  • The command behaves differently on your machine: FFmpeg and yt-dlp options are version-sensitive. Check the documentation corresponding to your installed versions and confirm the exact input format and command.
  • You need newly added entries to appear automatically: the general documentation cited here does not establish that behavior. Identify the list format and share the command and desired behavior before choosing a format-specific solution.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than manage a local FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
