What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To keep an FFmpeg YouTube stream running through a local power cut, back up the entire chain: Raspberry Pi, video source or camera, router, modem or ONT, and any required converters or switches. A UPS can keep those devices powered only for as long as its capacity supports their combined load; it cannot keep an ISP connection alive if the access network also fails.
There is no universal UPS size or runtime for this setup. Measure your actual devices and test the complete system before relying on it.
What must stay powered
Make an inventory before choosing backup power. A Pi that stays on battery cannot stream if its camera or video source, capture device, router, or modem/ONT switches off.
- Raspberry Pi and its power supply
- Camera, playback device, capture hardware, or other video source
- Router and modem/ONT; include any necessary network switches, converters, or adapters
- Any other equipment required to deliver the picture and sound
For each device, note its input voltage and current, or measure its power draw under the intended operating conditions. Include conversion losses and battery ageing when estimating runtime. The required capacity depends on the complete load and how long you want to bridge an outage, so a product’s headline runtime is not a substitute for testing your configuration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose power supplies and a UPS for the actual chain
Match the Raspberry Pi supply to its model
Raspberry Pi’s setup documentation lists 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5, 5 V at 3 A for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, and 5 V at 2.5 A for Pi 3 and earlier models in its table. Check the current requirements for your exact board and attached peripherals before buying: voltage loss in a removable cable can matter. Raspberry Pi Ltd. says, “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply suitable for the Raspberry Pi model you’re powering.” Raspberry Pi setup documentation.
Check every UPS output, not just its capacity label
Choose a UPS that can supply the voltage, current, and connector required by every device you intend to back up. Check the output rails, load limits, connectors, and changeover behavior. Find out whether it supports battery-health monitoring, replaceable batteries, or a low-battery signal that can trigger an orderly shutdown.

A Raspberry Pi UPS HAT is one possible component, but do not assume a Pi-focused HAT also powers a router or ONT. Those devices may need a separate backup unit. The cited UPSafePi manual is for Raspberry Pi 4B; it does not establish compatibility with all Pi models or runtime for an entire chain. UPSafePi manual.
Configure and test the YouTube stream
Choose encoder settings from measured upload capacity
Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in FFmpeg to suit the upload capacity available at the streaming location. YouTube recommends testing the connection, running a preflight with audio and motion similar to the real stream, and watching stream health messages. A bitrate that works on one connection may fail on another, or when other traffic competes for upload capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for current platform guidance, then verify the settings with your own connection.

Use a stream key carefully
In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use its server URL and stream key in your FFmpeg output configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in public logs, or expose it in a script shared with others. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements and restrictions for your account before scheduling a broadcast. Use only video and audio you have rights to stream. A UPS or successful encoder connection does not override copyright rules, and a long-running stream is not automatically compliant with YouTube policies on reused content or monetization. Policy and account eligibility can change; consult YouTube’s current guidance rather than assuming a particular stream format is permitted.

Configure FFmpeg recovery without mistaking it for backup power
FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer can be configured to attempt recovery from failures, including network-output problems. Its recovery controls include whether to try recovery, the wait interval, and a maximum number of attempts. Exact options, defaults, and support can differ by FFmpeg build and version, so check the formats documentation and the locally installed build before copying settings: FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation and FFmpeg documentation.
Recovery is a software aid, not an electrical or internet backup. It cannot restore power to the Pi or network equipment, or bring back an unavailable ISP path. Even if FFmpeg reconnects successfully, viewers may see an interruption on YouTube.

Test the outage plan before depending on it
- Run the complete intended setup. Use the actual Pi, source, network equipment, and UPS arrangement—not a Pi-only test if the live setup needs more devices.
- Check power changeover. Simulate a brief mains interruption and verify that the UPS transfer does not reboot the Pi, source, router, or ONT.
- Test a network interruption. Confirm that FFmpeg behaves as expected after a brief drop, then inspect YouTube stream health and whether the broadcast returns.
- Measure runtime under load. Observe the real setup on battery. Use that result to decide what outage duration you can reasonably cover; do not infer it from a different device load.
- Plan for low battery. If the UPS exposes a safe low-battery signal, consider stopping FFmpeg cleanly and shutting down the Pi before power is exhausted.
Raspberry Pi documentation warns that sudden power-downs can corrupt storage. Battery backup or an orderly-shutdown plan reduces exposure, but choosing a different microSD card does not keep a stream live during an outage. See Raspberry Pi’s setup documentation.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The Pi stays on, but the stream stops when the power fails. | The source, router, ONT, or another required device is not on backup power. | Recheck the complete equipment inventory and UPS load; power every essential part of the chain. |
| The Pi reboots during UPS changeover. | The supply, connector, UPS output, or transfer behavior is not maintaining power to the board. | Verify model-specific voltage and current requirements, cable suitability, UPS output limits, and changeover behavior under the real load. |
| The stream disconnects even though local devices remain powered. | The internet path may have failed, or available upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable. | Check wired network links where practical, YouTube stream health, and upload performance under representative competing traffic. A local UPS cannot guarantee the ISP access network remains available. |
| FFmpeg does not recover after an output failure. | The installed build may not support the expected option, recovery may be configured differently, or the failure may exceed the configured attempts. | Check the local FFmpeg version and its supported options, review logs without exposing the stream key, and test a brief network interruption before relying on recovery. |
| The Pi loses data after a battery runs flat. | Power ended before an orderly shutdown. | Test low-battery signaling and shutdown behavior, and avoid treating storage media choice as a substitute for safe shutdown. |
