PRISM Live Studio Mobile can keep a YouTube broadcast running while you use other apps on an Android phone, provided you enable Allow display over other apps for PRISM. PRISM says background live broadcasting is not supported on iOS. Neither setting makes a phone stream reliably unattended for 24 hours: the phone, app, network, and YouTube session can still fail, and YouTube may not archive a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.
Check whether your phone can stream in the background
Android
- Open your phone’s system settings and find PRISM Live Studio’s app permissions. Menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Enable Allow display over other apps for PRISM. PRISM’s background broadcasting guide identifies this permission as necessary for continuing a broadcast while PRISM runs in the background.
- Start the broadcast and test that it stays live while you switch to another app. Check its status from another device if possible.
Background operation is not a managed, redundant broadcast system. The phone still has to process and send the video, and the app, network, and YouTube session must remain healthy.
iPhone and iPad
PRISM says iOS apps do not support background live broadcasting because of operating-system policies. Do not rely on locking an iPhone or switching apps to sustain a PRISM broadcast.
Prepare YouTube and PRISM before going live
- Confirm channel eligibility in YouTube Studio. PRISM’s YouTube start troubleshooting guide says first-time live streaming requires creating and verifying a channel; activation after verification can take up to 24 hours. Restrictions can also prevent stream creation, including policy enforcement or daily stream-creation limits. Check current eligibility before scheduling a long broadcast.
- Connect PRISM to YouTube and choose the broadcast options. PRISM’s mobile app supports YouTube scheduling and options including category, DVR, latency, and license. A scheduled stream can give you a link to share ahead of time. For the meaning and current behavior of those options, consult PRISM’s detailed YouTube settings guide.
- If PRISM cannot create a stream, check YouTube Live Dashboard. PRISM’s troubleshooting guide describes creating a stream in the YouTube Live Dashboard from a browser, then returning to PRISM. Channel restrictions may still prevent going live.
- Choose quality for the actual connection. YouTube advises matching encoder settings to the connection available and testing before the event. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance as a reference; the suitable setting depends on the resolution, frame rate, and upload capacity you can sustain.
- Test the complete broadcast. Check audio, image, connection stability, and YouTube stream health before relying on the stream. PRISM’s mobile workflow has options for resolution and frame rate; test the real content, including movement and sound.
Choose settings that favor a stable mobile stream
A phone has to capture video, display it, encode it, and transmit it over a wireless connection at the same time. If the stream struggles, reducing image demands can ease both network and device load.

Estimate the upload capacity you need
With adaptive bitrate off, PRISM publishes approximate video-chunk bandwidth ranges of 0.1–4 or 0.1–6 Mbps for 1080p, 0.1–2.5 or 0.1–4 Mbps for 720p, 0.1–2.0 Mbps for 480p, and 0.1–1.5 Mbps for 360p. The alternatives in the 1080p and 720p ranges reflect different conditions or settings; they are not a universal YouTube guarantee. Actual upload needs vary. PRISM recommends having at least twice the bandwidth indicated for high-quality live streaming. Measure upload performance where you intend to broadcast, and favor a stable connection over a best-case speed result. See PRISM’s stability and quality tips.
Manage heat and monitor the broadcast
Long streaming sessions can heat a phone. PRISM says heat can reduce CPU performance and delay stream processing. Remove the case for a while if the phone is getting hot, close unnecessary apps, and avoid unneeded overlays or effects. These steps may help reduce load; none guarantees that a phone can run continuously without interruption.

PRISM says its app checks whether the broadcast remains on air and stops its own streaming after it confirms that the platform stream has ended. The reviewed PRISM guidance does not establish automatic restart after an interruption. YouTube also identifies platform enforcement and device or transmission problems as reasons a live stream can end. Keep a recovery procedure: check live status from another device when possible, identify whether the phone, connection, PRISM, or YouTube ended the broadcast, and restart only after resolving the cause.
Do not rely on YouTube to archive a 24/7 stream
PRISM states that YouTube has no maximum live-stream duration, but that is not a promise of uninterrupted uptime. Separately, YouTube Help says a live stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the complete program matters, make a local recording and treat it as the primary backup rather than relying on YouTube’s archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Does PRISM automatically restart a YouTube stream after it disconnects?
The reviewed PRISM guidance does not establish automatic restart after an interruption. Plan to check the stream and restart it yourself if needed.

No. PRISM says iOS apps do not support background live broadcasting.
