To keep a YouTube radio stream running after your computer is off, the encoder must run somewhere else. For prerecorded music or other prepared programming, that usually means hosting the playlist in the cloud or using compatible standalone encoder hardware. A local encoder cannot keep sending a stream after the computer running it shuts down.
Why turning off the computer stops a stream
YouTube receives a live stream from an encoder: software or hardware that sends audio and video to YouTube. YouTube’s setup instructions require you to enter its server URL and stream key in the encoder, then start the encoder. If that encoder is on your computer, shutting the computer down stops its transmission.
For a radio-style channel made from prepared files, you do not need to keep your personal computer on if another system can play those files and send them to YouTube. For comparison, YouTube’s encoder guide lists AJA HELO Plus and describes its optional PlayToStream feature for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. The guide does not establish the exact audio-only radio workflow, playlist looping behavior, scheduling limits, current price, or availability. Confirm those details with the manufacturer before relying on it.

Set up a cloud-hosted playlist
This approach is for prepared recordings, not a live camera or microphone feed. The cloud service plays uploaded media and sends it to YouTube; your browser and home computer do not need to remain open once the cloud broadcast is running.
- Prepare authorized media. Use files you own or have permission to broadcast. Check that the files play correctly and that the playlist contains the material you intend to run.
- Create or select a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select the stream. If it is scheduled, schedule it in Studio and connect the encoder at the scheduled time. Interface labels can change; follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the destination details. Get the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio and enter them in the cloud service’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Upload files and make a playlist. Add one or more prepared recordings and arrange them in the order the service should play them. Confirm the service supports the looping or continuous-play behavior you need; do not assume a general playlist feature means it will repeat indefinitely.
- Start the cloud broadcast and verify it. Start the broadcast from the service dashboard, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room for the preview and live status. Confirm that audio is present and that the correct broadcast is active before closing your computer.
- Check it again after disconnecting locally. Close the browser or turn off your computer, then verify the YouTube stream from another device or connection. This confirms that the cloud worker—not a local encoder—continues to send the program.
As one example of a provider-described workflow, Looping Stream says users upload media, create a playlist, provide the YouTube RTMP destination and key, and start a broadcast handled by a cloud worker. Its page describes a trial of seven days, 24 total stream hours, 1 GB storage, and one concurrent stream; these are the provider’s stated terms, not an independent measurement, and may change. The same provider warns that outages, invalid keys, or source-file problems can stop a stream.

Keep the YouTube stream and broadcast straight
YouTube uses “stream” and “broadcast” for different things. The stream is the audio-video transmission configuration; a broadcast is the watchable YouTube event. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation, last updated September 14, 2026, distinguishes the two and describes a 24/7 example in which an ongoing broadcast continues while a separate interview broadcast is started and ended. Most channel operators do not need the API to run a playlist, but the distinction helps explain why the transmission settings and the public video event are not identical.
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement applies to streams under 12 hours; do not assume a longer broadcast will be archived on the basis of that guidance. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Protect your channel and content
- Use media you are allowed to broadcast. A live format does not make copyrighted music or video permissible. Obtain the rights or permissions needed for your use.
- Review YouTube’s policies. A service provider also directs users to follow YouTube rules on copyrighted and repetitive content. A stream made from repeated material is not automatically acceptable just because it is automated.
- Keep the stream key private. Store it only in the service or encoder that needs it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
- Monitor status rather than assuming “24/7” means interruption-proof. Check the service dashboard and YouTube Live Control Room when starting the stream and when troubleshooting a disconnect.
Troubleshoot a stream that will not stay live
