That keeps the command running, but it does not by itself guarantee that video is advancing or that YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast. First decide whether you mean playing a playlist on the VPS or broadcasting its media as a public YouTube Live stream; the command and the checks differ.
Choose the stream you mean
- Headless playback: the VPS plays a playlist locally, for example through a player. This does not, by itself, publish a YouTube Live broadcast.
- Outgoing YouTube Live broadcast: a media process reads playlist items and sends an encoded feed to YouTube using a stream key. You must check the incoming broadcast at YouTube as well as the service process.
The steps below cover both at the service-management level. Build and test the media command for the specific job before asking systemd to supervise it.
Test the media command before making it a service
For playlist playback
mpv can use a YouTube URL resolver hook compatible with youtube-dl; its FAQ advises supplying the actual playlist URL. Another approach is yt-dlp piped to a player through standard input and output. Check that the installed tools can resolve the playlist and that the player behaves as intended while running interactively. Upstream YouTube changes can affect URL extraction and player integration, so a command that worked previously may need maintenance. See the mpv manual and yt-dlp FAQ.
For a broadcast to YouTube Live
Test the full media pipeline with the intended playlist, output format, destination, and stream key. Confirm in YouTube’s receiving interface that the feed arrives and advances. Keep the key out of scripts or unit text that other users can read; use a protected configuration or secrets mechanism, and restrict access to any environment file containing it.

Use absolute paths to executables and media files. If the service runs as a dedicated unprivileged user, confirm that account can read the playlist, configuration, and any required files. The media command must remain in the foreground so systemd can supervise it.
Create a systemd service
Save a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/playlist-stream.service. This is a starting template, not a complete media command: replace the example executable and arguments with the command you tested.

Otherwise, choose an appropriate existing service account rather than assuming this user exists.WorkingDirectoryis optional, but useful if the command expects relative paths.WantsandAfterrequest network-online ordering. They do not prove internet access or YouTube availability when the process starts.Restart=on-failurerestarts after failures recognized by systemd.RestartSec=10adds a delay before a restart; adjust it to suit the workload and avoid rapid retries that obscure persistent errors.
Systemd restart policy cannot reliably detect every silent media freeze. It also cannot fix invalid playlist entries, expired media URLs, authentication problems, or a rejected stream key. Avoid choosing Restart=always without considering how planned exits and service stops should behave. Consult the systemd service documentation for behavior on your distribution.
Enable the service and check it
- Reload unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload - Enable it at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now playlist-stream.service. Enabling connects the unit to its configured boot target; starting now also tests the current launch. - Inspect the process-level status:
systemctl status playlist-stream.service - Follow its logs:
journalctl -u playlist-stream.service -f. Look for command-not-found errors, permissions failures, repeated exits, or media-tool errors.

Use FFmpeg recovery only for the failure it addresses
Systemd can relaunch a process after a covered exit; FFmpeg also provides protocol-level recovery options. These are different layers, and their scope matters. FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation describes input options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_streamed for applicable HTTP cases. Place input options where they apply to the following input, and check the installed FFmpeg version’s documentation before adopting them.
For output recovery, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has options such as attempt_recovery. This is not a universal switch for all output protocols or errors. An option for HTTP input will not fix a bad stream key or repair an application that remains alive but frozen; FIFO output recovery is a separate mechanism. Read the relevant FFmpeg HTTP protocol and FIFO muxer documentation. The project commit record describes reconnect options as allowing reconnection of certain endless live streams that fail with EOF, not as a guarantee against every failure: FFmpeg commit record.

Reboot and verify that media recovers
- Reboot the VPS during a maintenance window:
sudo reboot. - After it returns, check
systemctl status playlist-stream.serviceand review boot-time logs withjournalctl -u playlist-stream.service -b. - For local playback, verify observable output or another meaningful sign that media is advancing; a running process alone is insufficient.
- For an outgoing broadcast, inspect the receiving side in YouTube Live and verify that the feed is arriving and advancing. A service marked active does not establish receiver-side health.
- If the service is active but content has stopped, inspect the media process and its logs. Add monitoring or a health check suited to the media pipeline if silent hangs are a risk; a restart policy alone is not a health check.
Troubleshoot common failures
