The encoder keeps running on the server after your SSH client disconnects, and you can reconnect later to inspect or reattach to it. This protects against an SSH disconnect—not an encoder crash, VPS reboot, or provider outage.
What tmux does—and what it does not
tmux keeps a terminal session running on the VPS independently of the SSH client. If the connection from your laptop drops, the process started inside that session can continue. The encoder must be running on the VPS inside tmux; putting tmux on your laptop around a local encoder does not protect a stream sent from that laptop.
tmux is not a process supervisor or a backup. It does not restart a crashed encoder, bring a process back after a VPS reboot, or restore service during a host or provider outage. Those are separate failure cases and need separate recovery arrangements.
Start the encoder in a named tmux session
- Connect to the VPS. SSH into the Indian VPS using the account that will run the stream. Confirm that
tmuxis installed; install it using the package manager for the VPS operating system if it is not. - Create a named session. Run
tmux new -s youtube-live. You are now in a terminal managed by tmux on the server. - Start the encoder inside that terminal. Use your encoder’s normal command or workflow, configured with the YouTube ingest server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Wait for the encoder to begin sending the feed and check that YouTube receives it before detaching.
- Detach without stopping the encoder. Press
Ctrl-b, release the keys, then pressd. This detaches your SSH terminal from the tmux session; it does not stop the session or encoder. - Reconnect and check later. SSH back into the same VPS account, run
tmux lsto see available sessions, then reattach withtmux attach -t youtube-live. You can inspect the terminal output and interact with the encoder. - Stop deliberately when finished. Reattach, stop the encoder cleanly using its supported stop method, then exit the shell or session when you no longer need it.

Connect the VPS encoder to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s configuration. Treat the key as a password: keep it out of public logs, screenshots, shared command output, and shell history where possible.
- Use RTMPS if the encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP. If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder before sending again.
- Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe interval, and bitrate supported by both your encoder and YouTube, and sustainable by the VPS connection. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingestion, supports up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the official encoder settings rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
- In Live Control Room, confirm that the preview and stream health are good before relying on the feed. Test with similar audio and movement to the intended stream, then keep monitoring during the event.

Check the VPS network and YouTube channel requirements
The encoder’s bitrate must fit within the VPS’s available outbound bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom rather than using all available upload capacity. Check the VPS provider’s network policy and sustained outbound throughput from the server itself; a speed test on your home connection does not establish what the VPS can send. YouTube’s settings guidance and streaming tips explain bitrate and testing considerations.

For a first broadcast, plan ahead: YouTube says enabling live streaming can take up to 24 hours. Its getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days.
Troubleshoot the failure you actually have

Ending the stream and preserving its archive
An SSH disconnect does not itself end the YouTube event if the encoder continues sending. To end the stream, stop sending content from the encoder and confirm the event’s status in Studio. YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; confirm the event lifecycle in Studio rather than assuming a terminal disconnect controls it.
