A UPS can cover the devices connected to it, but it cannot keep an ISP’s wider network or YouTube’s ingestion service online. Plan for both power and connectivity, then test the setup before relying on it.
What has to keep working
A YouTube Live loop sent from an encoder depends on more than the router. Map the whole route from the video to YouTube:
- Video source: the computer or other device playing the loop.
- Encoder: the software or hardware that sends the video to YouTube. It may be the same computer as the playback source.
- Network equipment: the router and, where fibre service uses a separate unit, the ONT or modem.
- Upstream connection: the ISP’s network and the route to YouTube’s ingestion service.
Identify which devices must remain on for your particular arrangement. A router UPS alone will not sustain a computer-based stream if the computer loses power. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming and recommends preparing the stream in advance, previewing it in Live Control Room, and monitoring stream quality during the event (YouTube Help: encoder streaming).
Plan backup power for the actual load
Cover every essential device
List the computer or encoder, router, separate ONT or modem, and any other device required to keep the stream operating. Decide which must run during an outage and connect each to an appropriately rated backup supply. If your goal is only to keep Wi-Fi available—for example, “the main router + one Deco unit”—that is a different load from keeping a live stream encoder running; it still requires the router and any required ONT to stay powered.

Check compatibility and runtime
For a router UPS, confirm the voltage, current, connector size and polarity match the equipment. If the router and ONT both need backup, check whether the unit can power both at once. For a computer-based stream, include the computer and any necessary monitor or accessories in the power plan. Estimate runtime from the connected equipment’s actual load and the backup unit’s specifications; a product name or VA rating by itself does not establish how long your setup will last.
A router/modem UPS is a relevant product category for keeping network equipment on during a local outage. India-focused reseller guidance discusses this use and cites an APC model, but that is not an independently verified runtime recommendation; check current specifications and compatibility before buying (APC eStore Wale guidance). A Government of India broadband agreement also refers to UPS backup for network infrastructure, but it is not a consumer buying guide (Department of Telecommunications agreement).

Make sure the internet connection can carry the stream
Test outbound upload speed when the network is being used as it normally would be, rather than relying on an idle speed test. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends allowing 20% headroom. If you use primary and backup encoders, include their bitrates in the total when planning capacity (YouTube streaming tips).
Powering the router and ONT does not guarantee the ISP’s fibre line, wider network, or connection to YouTube will remain available. Ask your ISP what happens to service during a local outage and test the actual route you intend to use. There is no universal India-wide continuity guarantee established for this setup.

Prepare the YouTube stream before the outage matters
- Set up the encoder ahead of time. YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours in advance and starting them at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. The exact workflow depends on your encoder and whether you are using an event or a stream intended to remain live.
- Enter YouTube’s stream details. In YouTube Studio, get the stream URL and stream key for the stream, then enter them in the encoder. The stream key connects your encoder to YouTube ingestion, so treat it like a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send video to your channel (YouTube Help: stream keys).
- Preview before going live. Check the preview in Live Control Room for the expected video and audio, and verify that the stream is accessible on the intended watch page and on mobile devices.
- Monitor stream health. Keep an eye on YouTube’s stream health and the local encoder during the event. If you are recording an archive locally, monitor available storage and file growth as well.
Test the backup and know what it can prove
If you have a primary and backup encoder, test the handoff before depending on it. YouTube’s instruction is: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable. Make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.” (YouTube Help) That test checks encoder failover; it does not prove that a computer, router, ISP link, or YouTube ingestion will recover automatically after a power cut.
Test your intended arrangement under realistic conditions: confirm that each backed-up device stays on, the encoder continues sending, and the YouTube player behaves as expected. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but archiving is not outage recovery and does not guarantee a disrupted live event will resume (YouTube Help: live stream archives).

Common failure points and fixes
- The stream stops when power goes out: the encoder computer or another essential device may not be on backup power. Re-map the chain and connect each required device to suitable backup power.
- Wi-Fi stays on, but the stream ends: the router may be powered while the ONT, computer, or encoder is not. Check each component individually.
- All local equipment stays powered, but YouTube disconnects: the ISP line or wider network may be down, or YouTube ingestion may be unavailable. A local UPS cannot repair either issue; check with the ISP and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
- The encoder drops frames or reports poor stream health: available upload capacity may be too low for the total bitrate, especially when other devices share the connection. Retest under realistic load and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
- The backup encoder does not take over: verify its stream configuration and test failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet connection, then confirm the player switches to the backup.
- A router UPS will not power the ONT: check connector, voltage, current, and polarity for each device; use a compatible supply capable of powering both where needed.
