Closing OBS stops the feed OBS is sending to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to end a stream by stopping the encoder from sending content. To keep a broadcast going after OBS closes, either leave an encoder running on an always-on device or, for prerecorded video, use a cloud service that plays it out to YouTube. A cloud playlist cannot keep a genuinely live camera or gameplay feed alive after its source stops.
What happens when you close OBS?
YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder connected with the stream URL and key. When OBS—the encoder sending that feed—stops, YouTube no longer receives it. YouTube’s documented instruction is: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” The help page does not describe OBS’s close button specifically, but the practical result follows from the encoder workflow: the same OBS-generated feed does not continue just because the YouTube watch page remains open. Choose the right way to keep it running

For a real-time camera, game or production
An encoder still has to run somewhere and send the live source. Keep OBS open on a powered-on computer, or run an encoder on another always-on host. An RTMP relay can pass along an active input, but it cannot recreate live video after the encoder stops sending. For prerecorded video that can loop
Use a cloud prerecorded-playout service if you want a continuous YouTube broadcast without keeping your own OBS computer on. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded video streaming. Verify a provider’s current YouTube connection method, supported source formats, scheduling and loop controls, service limits and plan before relying on it. For a brief interruption only
Disconnect protection is an outage fallback, not an indefinite replacement for OBS. Restream documents fallback-video durations of 5, 15 or 30 minutes and says the feature requires Business or custom Enterprise. Confirm that your account is eligible and check current terms before buying; the documented window does not keep the original live source running after OBS closes. DIY: keep the encoder active
If your stream must show a live source, the do-it-yourself solution is to keep the encoder and its input running on a powered-on host. Closing OBS on the machine that supplies the feed ends that machine’s contribution; a second relay alone is not a substitute for an active source encoder.

- Open YouTube Studio and prepare the live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select the scheduled stream and use its current server URL and stream key in your encoder. YouTube documents stream-key reuse and live controls such as auto-start and auto-stop under live stream settings; these control stream management, not whether OBS keeps running. - Use the current ingest details in OBS. Copy the URL and key shown for that stream into OBS’s streaming configuration. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for YouTube Live. Choose the current RTMPS ingest option offered for the stream rather than relying on an old URL saved elsewhere. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Keep the source machine and OBS running. Prevent the computer from sleeping, keep it powered, and maintain a reliable network connection. If OBS exits, the host loses power or the network drops, the feed can stop reaching YouTube.
- For resilience, move the encoder—not just the relay. If you need the live source to continue independently of your everyday computer, operate the encoder on another always-on host that can access the source and send the feed. A relay can forward that feed but cannot generate it after the source encoder has stopped.

Limits to plan for on 24/7 broadcasts
Archives are not a complete 24-hour-plus recording
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete replay. If an archive matters, make a separate recording and/or plan periodic sessions, and check YouTube’s current behavior before setting an archive workflow. Service maintenance can be provider-specific
Restream separately warns that its server may undergo maintenance and restart during continuous streaming over 24 hours, and suggests restarting every 24 hours. This is a Restream operational note, not a YouTube duration limit. Restream: How long can I stream for?

Stream controls do not keep an encoder alive
YouTube’s auto-start, auto-stop and reusable stream-key settings help manage a stream, but they do not keep an encoder process running after it exits. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

- YouTube shows no incoming stream after closing OBS: OBS was the active encoder. Reopen it and resume sending, or use an always-on encoder host for a genuinely live source; for prerecorded video, use cloud playout.
- The key or connection is rejected: Check that OBS uses the current stream URL and key from the intended YouTube Studio stream. If the key was exposed, reset it and update the encoder with the new value. YouTube live stream settings
- A fallback clip ends while OBS is still offline: The fallback window is limited. Restream documents 5-, 15- and 30-minute durations for eligible Business or custom Enterprise accounts; it is not an indefinite source replacement. Restream disconnect protection
- The continuous stream restarts: Distinguish a YouTube ingest issue from a provider-side restart. Restream notes possible server maintenance and restart during continuous broadcasts over 24 hours on its service; that note should not be treated as a YouTube-wide rule. Restream duration guidance

Copyright and content checks for prerecorded loops
Before looping recorded material, make sure you have the rights to stream it on YouTube, including music, images and third-party footage. Permission to use a recording elsewhere does not automatically establish permission for a YouTube livestream. Review YouTube’s current live-stream rules and rights information for your material before going live; no playout service can grant those rights or guarantee that a stream will avoid a claim or interruption.
