Check that YouTube is still receiving the encoder feed, then restore and verify the playlist before switching back. A cloud playlist service can remove the need to keep a computer online, but it cannot supply content your library does not have.
Why looping does not fix an empty source folder
OBS can loop a single media file or a playlist, but those settings repeat playable media; they do not create or substitute for missing files. OBS’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022 and checked October 3, 2026, describes the Media Source Loop option and the VLC Video Source playlist loop setting.
If the playlist has run out, its files are unreadable, or the folder is empty, the practical choice is to provide a separate fallback feed or end the broadcast. YouTube receives the encoder feed; it does not automatically replace missing local media.
Keep a fallback scene ready in OBS
A scene that relies only on elements independent of the missing directory can provide a useful slate while you restore content. This is a practical setup based on OBS’s documented scene sources and file-looping controls, not a built-in automatic recovery feature.

- Create the scene before an outage. In OBS, add a scene such as “Emergency slate.” Add a color background and text such as “Programming is temporarily unavailable; please check back.” Use sources that do not refer to the empty media folder.
- Decide what the audience should hear. If silence is unsuitable, prepare a separately stored audio fallback that you own or are authorized to broadcast. Do not assume a missing video folder contains usable audio.
- Switch when the playlist ends or fails. Select the fallback scene in OBS rather than leaving a failed media source as the only visual. The fallback does not repair the playlist; it keeps a deliberate slate on the encoder output while you address the source problem.
- Restore authorized files. Refill the directory with content your channel owns or is permitted to broadcast. Before adding it back to a live playlist, check for absent audio, damaged frames, long black sections, and inconsistent formats.
- Return to the playlist and monitor it. Once the restored files are ready, switch back to the media scene and check both playback and YouTube stream health.
Confirm YouTube is receiving the encoder feed
Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that the encoder feed is arriving. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings help page explains the stream URL and key, as well as auto-start and auto-stop controls. A running OBS preview alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving the feed.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder to use the new key. A mismatched or invalid key can prevent the correct feed from reaching the event.

Choose between a fallback, cloud playlist, or stopping

Choose based on whether replacement content exists, whether you need local scene control, and whether you want to keep the computer, connection, and power requirements of a local encoder. No option can promise uninterrupted availability: outages, invalid keys, and source-file problems can still interrupt a stream.
