On a Linux VPS that uses systemd, run the encoder as a system service, enable that service at boot, and configure its restart policy for the encoder’s exit behavior. These are separate safeguards: enabling starts the service after a reboot; Restart= responds to qualifying process exits or timeouts. Neither one proves that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed, so verify the recovered stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
What a reboot-recovery setup can—and cannot—do
A service manager can launch your encoder when the VPS boots and restart it after certain failures. It cannot fix an invalid stream key, a missing video file, a broken command, inadequate outbound bandwidth, or a problem on YouTube’s side. The exact unit depends on your Linux distribution, systemd version, FFmpeg command, input media, network dependencies, and credential handling.
This guide assumes the VPS uses systemd. If it does not, use the service manager documented for that operating system; the unit directives below will not apply unchanged.
Understand the two recovery layers
Boot startup: enable the unit
Enabling a unit arranges for it to start during the system’s normal boot process. A service that was started manually in an SSH session may disappear when that session ends or the server reboots. See the systemctl documentation for the enable operation and its relationship to boot targets.

Process recovery: choose a restart policy
Systemd’s Restart= setting controls whether it starts a service again after the process exits or times out. The default is Restart=no. Restart=on-failure is intended for unsuccessful exits and specified failures; Restart=always also restarts after a clean exit, subject to systemd’s documented exceptions. A process stopped as part of a systemd operation is not restarted by this policy. Consult the systemd service documentation and check the version installed on your VPS.
| Policy | When it is useful | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
Restart=on-failure |
The encoder is expected to keep running, and an unsuccessful exit should trigger recovery. | If the encoder exits cleanly, this policy does not treat that exit as a failure. |
Restart=always |
The encoder should be relaunched even after a clean exit. | Confirm that a clean exit should not mean the job is finished; systemd-operated stops remain an exception. |
Restart=no |
Automatic restart is not wanted. | This is systemd’s documented default, so it does not provide process-exit recovery. |
Choose based on how your particular encoder signals completion and how you want intentional stops handled. A restart loop cannot make an invalid command or unavailable input work.

Prepare the encoder and protect the stream key
- Test the real command first. Run the intended encoder command with the actual media input and the stream destination from YouTube. Confirm that the input exists and the encoder can connect before adding service supervision.
- Get the destination from YouTube. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings explains that stream keys act like a password and address: they identify where the encoder sends its feed and let YouTube accept it. Use the stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming an endpoint.
- Keep credentials private. Do not place the key in a public script, example, or log. Restrict access to the service configuration that contains it. If a key is reset or compromised, update the value used by the encoder; YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guide explains how to retrieve the key in Live Control Room.
- Choose the supported connection and encoding settings. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS encoder workflows and recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. FFmpeg documents RTMP protocol forms and an example of sending a real-time file to an RTMP server in its RTMP protocol documentation. For codec, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval, follow YouTube’s current encoder settings; the recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate that fits every stream.
- Check bandwidth and dependencies. Make sure the VPS has outbound capacity for the total stream bitrate, plus headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom and warns that connectivity disruptions can break a stream in its streaming tips. If the source media is on a mounted disk or depends on a network resource, account for that dependency in the unit and confirm it is available when the service starts.
Create a systemd service for the encoder
There is no safe universal unit file: the executable path, arguments, input, working directory, user, environment, and credential storage all vary. Create a service unit using the conventions for your distribution, and adapt it to the command that you already tested.
- Run the encoder as an appropriate service account with access to the required media and configuration, rather than assuming an interactive shell’s permissions and environment.
- Set the command and working directory explicitly where needed. Do not rely on shell aliases, interactive startup files, or files that are available only in your SSH session.
- Set
Restart=on-failureorRestart=alwaysdeliberately, based on the exit behavior explained above. Follow systemd’s documented restart controls for your installed version. - Arrange for required filesystems, mounts, network access, and credentials to be available before the encoder needs them. Network-online ordering and mount dependencies depend on the VPS and its network configuration; a generic ordering line cannot guarantee YouTube reachability.
- Keep the stream key out of world-readable locations and avoid logging commands or environment values that expose it.
Enable, start, and inspect the service
- Validate the unit. After saving the unit in the appropriate systemd location, ask systemd to reload unit definitions using
systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable boot startup. Run
systemctl enable your-service-name.service, replacing the example name with your actual unit. - Start it now. Run
systemctl start your-service-name.service. - Inspect state and logs. Use
systemctl status your-service-name.serviceandjournalctl -u your-service-name.service. Check for command errors, missing files, permission problems, connection failures, and repeated restarts. - Verify the stream in YouTube. A running process or active systemd unit is not evidence that YouTube is receiving valid video. Check Live Control Room for incoming feed and stream health, then confirm the viewer-facing page behaves as intended.
Test recovery with a planned reboot
Do not rely on the first unplanned outage to discover whether the configuration works. Choose a maintenance window when a brief interruption is acceptable, then reboot the VPS using its normal administrative procedure.

- After the server returns, confirm the unit is active with
systemctl status your-service-name.service. - Review the unit’s logs for startup errors or repeated restarts.
- Confirm the encoder connects to YouTube and that Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming feed.
- Check the viewer-facing page and the scheduled/live workflow you actually use. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that does not establish how every interrupted 24/7 broadcast will resume or appear after a reboot. Test the event and watch-page behavior for your setup.
Troubleshoot the recovery path
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Service does not start after reboot | Unit was not enabled, unit definition is invalid, or startup dependency is missing. | Check systemctl status and the journal; confirm the correct unit name and enablement, then review filesystem, mount, and network dependencies. |
| Service starts and exits immediately | Command, permissions, input path, or environment differs from the manual test. | Compare the unit’s executable, arguments, user, working directory, and environment with the tested command; check the logs for the specific error. |
| Encoder runs but YouTube does not receive a healthy feed | Wrong stream URL or key, unsupported or unsuitable output settings, network failure, or a YouTube-side issue. | Verify the current URL and key in Live Control Room, inspect encoder output and YouTube health indicators, and check outbound network capacity and stability. |
| Encoder exits cleanly and stays stopped | Restart=on-failure does not restart a clean exit. |
Confirm whether a clean exit is expected. If the encoder should run continuously even after a clean exit, assess Restart=always and its implications. |
| Encoder repeatedly restarts | A restart policy is exposing an unresolved startup or runtime error. | Read the journal and fix the underlying command, media, credentials, permissions, or network problem instead of treating repeated restarts as recovery. |
| Feed drops during or after reboot | Network availability, insufficient capacity, or YouTube’s handling of the interrupted event may be involved. | Check YouTube’s stream-health view, confirm bandwidth headroom, and test how your specific event behaves through a controlled restart. |

Does a systemd restart policy guarantee the YouTube stream will resume on the same live event?
No. The service can relaunch the encoder, but YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee that every interrupted 24/7 broadcast resumes on the same viewer-facing event or watch page. Test your own scheduled/live workflow.
