If SSH disconnects, an FFmpeg stream started in that SSH terminal may stop. For a quick fix, start FFmpeg inside a tmux session on the remote Linux server, then detach before closing SSH. For unattended operation that must also survive process exits and server reboots, run FFmpeg as a systemd service with a restart policy. In either case, check YouTube Studio: a live terminal or service process does not prove that the broadcast is reaching viewers.
Choose the right way to keep the stream running
These options solve different failure points. A cloud looping service avoids running the streaming process on your own host; tmux preserves a remote terminal session after SSH disconnects; systemd supervises a process and can start it at boot or after it exits.
| Approach | Helps with | Does not provide | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo hosted looping | Keeping uploaded video streaming to YouTube without operating a local FFmpeg host | Control over your local server; features and terms depend on the provider | People who want a managed alternative to running a host themselves |
tmux |
Ordinary SSH disconnection; reconnecting to the same remote terminal | Recovery from server reboot, FFmpeg crash, or a failed stream connection | Quick rescue and interactive monitoring |
systemd |
Starting at boot, restarting an exited process, and consistent logs and status | Proof of viewer-side stream health or repair of a persistent input or external fault | A self-hosted, unattended Linux stream |
Keep FFmpeg running through an SSH disconnect with tmux
Start tmux on the remote server, not on your local computer. FFmpeg must be launched inside that remote session; putting a local terminal in tmux does not protect a process started separately on the server. The tmux documentation describes this detach-and-reattach workflow for SSH sessions: tmux.info: Keep Work Running over SSH (verified September 2026 for tmux 3.7c).
- Connect to the remote host: use SSH to sign in as the account that will run the stream.
- Create a named tmux session: run
tmux new -s music-stream. - Start FFmpeg inside that session: use your existing, verified FFmpeg command, adding
-nostdinfor background operation. Do not paste a stream key into a command that will be saved in shell history. - Detach without stopping the process: press
Ctrl+b, release the keys, then pressd. You can now close SSH. - Reattach later: SSH back into the same host with the same user, run
tmux list-sessions, then runtmux attach -t music-streamif the named session is listed. - Verify the broadcast: inspect the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio. A surviving tmux session is not evidence that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
If the session is missing, confirm you reconnected to the same server and user. Host logout policies can also affect session persistence. Even when tmux works as intended, it does not recover from a server reboot, an FFmpeg crash, or an independent network failure.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use systemd for a self-hosted stream that must restart
For an unattended Linux server, a systemd service is generally a better supervisor than leaving an interactive terminal open. Configure the service with an explicit user, working directory, protected environment file for the stream key, a restart delay, and journal logging. Enable it at boot, then check its state and logs. A practical walkthrough is available in StreamNeo’s guide to running FFmpeg as a systemd service (published 17 September 2026).
- Prepare the command and credentials: confirm the media path and FFmpeg command, and store the stream key in a protected environment file rather than a public repository or shell history. Restrict access to the file to the service account and administrators who need it.
- Define a service unit: specify the service user, working directory, environment file, FFmpeg invocation, restart policy and delay, and journal output. Exact unit directives and command details depend on your Linux distribution, media, codecs, available encoder, and stream-key handling; validate them for your host rather than treating a generic example as a tested unit.
- Enable and start the service: enable it for boot and start it using the service name you chose. Check
systemctl status <service>for its current process state. - Inspect recent output: use
journalctl -u <service>to read the service log and identify FFmpeg errors. - Test recovery deliberately: during a planned maintenance window, verify that the service starts after a reboot and that it restarts after a process exit. Check YouTube Studio separately after each test.
A restart policy can retry a persistent failure repeatedly; a delay helps avoid a rapid retry loop, but does not fix the cause. A service marked “active (running)” only reports process state, not whether YouTube is receiving a valid broadcast.

Use current YouTube encoder settings
Do not copy bitrate, resolution, or keyframe values from an old third-party command and assume they apply to every stream. YouTube’s encoder requirements can change; consult its current official guidance for the output format and settings appropriate to your stream: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
For an Indian music stream, the choice of music does not change the need to follow YouTube’s platform rules. Use audio and video you have the rights to stream, and make sure your broadcast setup follows YouTube’s applicable requirements. A process that is technically running does not establish that the content is authorized or that the stream is healthy.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops or never appears in YouTube Studio
- SSH disconnect ends the stream: FFmpeg was likely started outside the remote tmux session, or the session itself ended. Reconnect to the same host and account, inspect
tmux list-sessions, and start FFmpeg inside a named remote session next time. - tmux is present, but the stream is gone: tmux preserves the terminal, not FFmpeg’s connection or the server. Check the FFmpeg output and YouTube Studio, then consider a systemd service for process supervision.
- systemd repeatedly restarts FFmpeg: read the first meaningful error in
journalctl. Common causes include an incorrect or revoked stream key, a wrong media path or file permissions, an unavailable input or encoder, and a network route problem. Fix the cause before relying on further retries. - Service says active, but viewers do not receive a healthy stream: check the YouTube Studio preview and stream health. Process status alone cannot diagnose platform-side rejection or a broken broadcast connection.
- Stream fails after a reboot: confirm the service was enabled for boot, that the service user can read the media and credentials, and that required mounts, network connectivity, and encoder dependencies are available when it starts.
- Power or internet goes down: tmux and systemd cannot overcome a powered-off server or unavailable network. A UPS may help with short power interruptions if sized for the actual equipment and runtime, but it cannot maintain internet service or guarantee YouTube recovery.
