Choose your codec, resolution and frame rate, then configure FFmpeg to target the matching YouTube recommendation with constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and enough upload capacity for the primary and any backup stream. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60; these are recommended settings, not universal hard caps.
Choose the bitrate for your output mode
YouTube’s published encoder table varies by codec, resolution and frame rate. Its minimum bitrate is not the same as a universal maximum: use the recommended value for your selected mode as the target, and check YouTube’s current table before configuring a stream.
| Ingest codec and mode | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264, 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p30 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p60 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended settings, not proof of a hard platform cap. The table lists other modes as well; use the exact row for your intended codec, resolution and frame rate rather than extrapolating from these examples. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table is the reference.
Set the encoder and stream requirements
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS. Its guidance calls for CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames and one reference frame. It lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, its recommended settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Verify the requirements for the selected mode in the current YouTube encoder guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In FFmpeg, bitrate, maximum-rate and buffer-size options control encoder behavior, but using them does not by itself guarantee that the outgoing stream meets YouTube’s CBR requirements. The right options depend on which encoder you use, your source and your output settings. Consult the documentation for your selected FFmpeg encoder and the FFmpeg reference; do not assume one command or set of flags suits every setup.
Configure and test the FFmpeg stream
- Select the output mode. Decide the codec, resolution and frame rate first. Choose a mode your encoder can sustain continuously, then find its minimum and recommended bitrate in YouTube’s encoder settings table.
- Set the video target and rate behavior. Configure the chosen encoder for the recommended bitrate and CBR behavior. Set keyframes two seconds apart and never more than four seconds apart. Apply the relevant scan, pixel and reference-frame guidance where the selected encoder exposes those settings. FFmpeg’s bitrate-related controls are encoder controls, so validate the actual output rather than treating a command line as a compliance guarantee.
- Set audio and ingest. Use an audio codec supported by YouTube, such as AAC or MP3; for stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. In Live Control Room, select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to that stream. See YouTube’s stream-management guidance.
- Budget upload bandwidth. Add the primary and backup stream bitrates, if you send both, then allow at least YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom above that combined total. Check usable upload capacity while other devices and services are using the same connection, not just the plan’s advertised speed.
- Test representative content. Before relying on a 24/7 output, test with the actual audio and representative motion. Check the incoming stream’s health and quality, and monitor it during operation. YouTube advises testing before a stream and monitoring it while live; its streaming tips also warn that shared network use can reduce available upload bandwidth.
Keep bandwidth and continuity in view
A bitrate that fits the nominal upload speed can still fail if other traffic consumes bandwidth or the connection fluctuates. YouTube’s recommendation is to leave 20% headroom above the combined primary and backup bitrates, and it cautions that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. If health indicators deteriorate, reduce the output mode or bitrate to one your connection can sustain, then test again.

A UPS for the encoder and network equipment can help with brief local power interruptions, but it cannot fix an ISP outage, a YouTube ingest issue or a remote-server failure. It is a limited continuity measure, not a substitute for stable connectivity.
Separate continuous delivery from archive preservation
YouTube says it can automatically archive a livestream if it is less than 12 hours. For a stream longer than 12 hours, it warns that the broadcast may not be captured at all. That is an archive risk, not a stated maximum broadcast duration. If you need a copy, record locally and plan storage and archive handling separately. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.

Protect the channel as well as the connection
For a documentary channel, confirm that you have the necessary rights to every video, soundtrack and other included material before putting it on a continuous loop. A stream key controls access to the ingest stream; it does not grant rights to the content. Review YouTube’s current copyright and channel policies before broadcasting.
Troubleshoot common bitrate and stability problems
- The stream reports a bitrate or quality problem: Confirm that the selected codec, resolution and frame rate match the row you used in YouTube’s current settings table. Check the encoder’s actual output and rate-control behavior; bitrate flags alone do not prove CBR compliance.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check available upload bandwidth under real shared-network conditions. Recalculate the primary-plus-backup total and preserve the recommended 20% headroom. If the connection cannot sustain the target, choose a lower mode and retest.
- Keyframes are flagged or playback is slow to catch up: Verify that the encoder produces keyframes at two-second intervals and does not exceed four seconds. Also check the stream’s selected latency and DVR settings in Live Control Room.
- The archive is missing after a very long broadcast: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as a YouTube archive. Use a local recording when preserving the entire program matters.
- The wrong video appears or someone else can control the feed: Check that FFmpeg is using the intended stream key and restrict access to it. Replace or reset an exposed key through the channel’s live-stream settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the channel to keep streaming without leaving a computer at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
