OBS’s built-in update check and Windows Update are separate. Schedule both kinds of maintenance for a planned low-viewership window, preserve your OBS configuration and media, then verify the stream after any restart. OBS can start streaming when it launches, but that is a recovery aid—not a guarantee of uninterrupted viewing.
Plan maintenance instead of updating during a live broadcast
For a children’s stream, choose a maintenance window with whoever manages the schedule and viewer-facing communication. Allow time to install updates, restart if needed, check the stream, and recover from a problem before the next planned broadcast period. No published figure establishes how long an OBS or Windows update will interrupt a stream, so do not promise viewers a specific recovery time.
Handle OBS updates and Windows updates separately
Control OBS’s built-in update checks
OBS has an “Automatically check for updates on startup” setting. You can turn off that check to avoid an update prompt appearing when OBS starts, or use the documented --disable-updater launch parameter on Windows or macOS. These controls affect OBS’s updater only; they do not block or schedule operating-system updates. See the OBS Project’s Launch Parameters documentation and English UI strings.
Schedule Windows restarts separately
Windows updates may require a restart, and Microsoft says updates cannot be stopped entirely. Use Windows active hours and restart scheduling to move automatic restarts to a more convenient time; these settings do not control OBS application updates. Prepare OBS so a planned restart is recoverable
- Save the current setup. Preserve the scene collection and profile you use for the stream. Keep a separate copy of any important configuration before maintenance.
- Check every media path. Make sure files referenced by scenes remain available at stable locations after a restart. OBS portable mode stores configuration alongside the application, but does not automatically package scene media. OBS documents portable mode for Windows, not macOS or Linux; see Running in Portable Mode.
- Confirm the launch target. Before using an automatic start option, identify the intended OBS profile, scene, streaming destination, and credential setup. The launch option cannot select or verify a correct setup on your behalf.
- Choose whether automatic start is appropriate. OBS documents
--startstreamingto start streaming when OBS launches. Use it only as part of a controlled recovery procedure that you understand and can verify, not as a substitute for checking the broadcast.

Verify the stream after maintenance
- Confirm OBS is running with the intended profile and scene.
- Check that the streaming service reports an active ingest.
- Confirm that audio and video are present, rather than assuming a successful OBS launch means viewers can see and hear the program.
A restart can interrupt the broadcast even if OBS starts streaming again. The documented launch option does not promise a gap-free handoff or recovery from every failure, and the cited official guidance does not establish a platform-independent watchdog or failover guarantee.

Troubleshoot carefully if OBS does not recover
- OBS opens to the wrong scene or profile: stop before resuming the broadcast, select the intended configuration, and confirm its media paths and destination.
- The stream is not active after OBS launches: check OBS and the streaming service rather than relying on the launch parameter alone. Confirm the selected destination and credential setup.
- A scene is missing media: check whether its referenced files moved or became unavailable. Portable mode does not copy those files into the application directory automatically.
- OBS behaves differently after an update: inspect OBS logs and recent system changes. OBS identifies antivirus interference as one possible troubleshooting cause and suggests checking its whitelist; it is not a diagnosis that applies to every failed update. See the OBS Help Portal.
