These are separate setups. The instructions below cover each one and apply specifically to Streamlabs Desktop where noted.
Choose the integration you need

Streamlabs documents these as distinct workflows. Its instructions for Virtual Camera and Application Audio Capture are for Streamlabs Desktop; do not assume the separate Streamlabs Plugin for OBS has identical Discord controls.
Link Discord for stream announcements
Streamlabs’ Discord Integration guide describes linking a Discord server and manually posting an announcement. The guide was published in 2018 and last updated in 2021, so first check whether Discord is still listed among the integrations available in your Streamlabs account.
- Open the integrations page in the Streamlabs dashboard.
- Find Discord and select Link.
- In the authorization window, choose the Discord server to connect. Complete any verification step Discord requests.
- Configure the announcement message and channel in the Streamlabs dashboard or, if using it, the Streamlabels application’s Live Actions tab.
- When you are live, use the Announce button to post the message.
The guide describes a manual announcement, not an automatic trigger when a stream starts. It also says the bot may appear offline except when it needs to post, and that an announcement can take up to five minutes to appear. If Discord is absent from your integrations page or the controls differ, the older guide may no longer match your account’s current options.

Show Streamlabs scenes in a Discord call
Use Streamlabs Desktop’s Virtual Camera when you want people in a Discord call to see your Streamlabs scene—for example, a composed video view with overlays or alerts. The camera path sends video, not desktop audio.
- Open Streamlabs Desktop settings.
- Install and start Virtual Camera using the controls in Streamlabs Desktop.
- Join or start a Discord call, open the call’s camera settings, and select Streamlabs Desktop Virtual Camera.
Streamlabs’ Discord streaming guide, updated October 8, 2025, notes that this camera route does not deliver desktop audio to call participants. If you need desktop audio in the call as well, you need a separate audio-routing setup; the guide gives VoiceMeeter Banana as one example, not a universal requirement.

When Discord’s own screen share is enough
If you only need to show an application or screen and do not need Streamlabs scenes, webcam composition, overlays or alerts, Discord’s native screen share is the simpler option. Share a specific application rather than your whole screen when you want to reduce the risk of exposing private windows or notifications.
Choose whether Discord voices reach your Streamlabs broadcast
To “hear your friends or mods in Discord without your stream hearing them,” route Discord audio separately from the audio sources Streamlabs Desktop sends to the broadcast. Streamlabs explains the application-capture and selective-recording options in its advanced audio control guide, last updated April 10, 2023.

Capture Discord in the stream
- In Streamlabs Desktop, add an Application Audio Capture source.
- Select the Discord application as the application to capture.
- In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Audio. Disable Desktop Audio if you do not want all computer audio captured in addition to the selected application source.
- Check the meters and make a short test recording or private test before going live, confirming that Discord is audible and that unrelated computer sounds are not.
Hear Discord locally but keep it out of the broadcast
- In Discord, open User Settings > Voice & Video.
- Set Discord’s output device to the headset or speakers you use for listening, provided that device is not being captured by Streamlabs Desktop.
- In Streamlabs Desktop, avoid adding Discord as an Application Audio Capture source. If Desktop Audio is enabled and captures that output device, Discord may still reach the broadcast; disable it or route Discord to an uncaptured device.
- Test the broadcast mix while listening locally. The result depends on which devices and sources your setup captures.
Keep alerts audible with selected application audio
If you use selected application capture rather than Desktop Audio, Streamlabs says to set alert sources to Monitor and Output when you want viewers to hear those alerts. For selective recordings, enable Selective Recording and choose for each source whether it belongs in the stream, the recording, or both. If application capture causes echoes, Streamlabs advises disabling Desktop Audio.
Streamlabs Desktop and the OBS plugin are not interchangeable instructions
The Virtual Camera and Application Audio Capture steps above refer to Streamlabs Desktop. Streamlabs separately documents a Streamlabs Plugin for OBS, whose guide was last updated September 28, 2026 and specifies OBS Studio 28.0.0 or later. That guide describes Streamlabs overlays, alerts, widgets, tipping, Stream Labels and Cloudbot in OBS; it does not establish that Discord controls match Streamlabs Desktop’s interface. Follow the instructions for the product you actually use rather than looking for a Desktop setting in the OBS plugin.

Troubleshoot the common failures
- No Discord option on the integrations page: The announcement guide is older. Confirm current availability in your Streamlabs account rather than assuming the feature is still offered to every account.
- The announcement does not appear immediately: The integration guide says a post may take five minutes. Confirm that you are live and clicked Announce; the guide does not describe an automatic announcement trigger.
- Discord call participants cannot hear desktop audio: Virtual Camera sends video only. Use a separate audio-routing method if call participants need that audio.
- Your stream captures too much computer audio: In Streamlabs Desktop, disable Desktop Audio under Settings > Audio when using selected application capture, and review which application or devices are routed to captured sources.
- Your stream has an echo: Streamlabs identifies Desktop Audio as a possible cause when application capture is also in use; disable Desktop Audio and test again.
- You hear Discord, but viewers do not: Check that Discord is selected as an Application Audio Capture source if it should be on stream, and verify the source is active in the stream mix.
- Viewers cannot hear alerts after changing audio capture: Set alert sources to Monitor and Output if they should be heard by viewers.
