How to Install OBS on an Oracle Cloud VPS for a YouTube 24/7 Stream

Running OBS on an Oracle Cloud VPS takes more than installation: choose resources for the encoding load, solve the headless display and session, protect the YouTube stream key, and test network and recovery before relying on a 24/7 stream.

You can run OBS on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) virtual machine and send its output to YouTube, but installing OBS is only one part of a 24/7 setup. You also need a suitable instance, a way for OBS to run on a headless Linux server, a sustained network path, a protected YouTube stream key, and monitoring that catches failures. A running VPS does not guarantee a live, healthy stream.

This guide explains the setup and the decisions to make before you commit to continuous broadcasting. Because OBS installation and headless-display steps depend on the exact Linux image and release, use the current OBS instructions for your selected OS rather than copying an unverified package command.

Before you start: confirm the channel and stream plan

YouTube encoder streaming requires live-stream eligibility on the channel and a configured stream destination. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains the prerequisites. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room and obtain its stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to broadcast to your stream. Do not paste it into public notes, screenshots, or a shared script.

Decide what OBS will broadcast. OBS is suited to a configured scene or media source; a prerecorded loop is different from a camera-based live production. Check YouTube’s rules for the material you plan to play. Having a file or permission to use a track does not by itself establish that a channel qualifies for monetization: YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies apply to the content and channel.

Choose an OCI instance for the workload, not the price label

OCI offers virtual-machine shapes with different CPU, memory, and networking resources. Flexible shapes let you select resources, and available network bandwidth scales with OCPUs, according to Oracle’s compute overview. Free Tier eligibility and regional availability can change; check Oracle’s current Free Tier details for the region and shape you intend to use.

There is no evidence that every Free Tier instance can encode a particular resolution continuously. Encoding load depends on the OBS build, encoder, scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, and whether suitable hardware acceleration is available. Start with a conservative output profile, then test CPU and memory use and stream health under the real workload before relying on it.

  • CPU and memory: Leave headroom for the OS and OBS. A complex scene, scaling, filters, and software encoding can increase load.
  • Network: Verify sustained outbound capacity from the chosen region to YouTube, rather than relying on a shape’s headline bandwidth alone.
  • Storage: Allow room for the OS, OBS, logs, and media. Estimate media storage from the files you will actually keep on the instance.
  • Availability: Confirm the shape is available in your selected region and that its current terms match your needs.

Create the Linux VPS and secure access

Create an OCI compute instance with a Linux image supported by the OBS instructions you intend to follow. Record the exact distribution and release: installation steps can differ between them. Configure SSH administration using a key and restrict access to trusted addresses where practical. OCI’s network security rules documentation explains the controls to review.

OBS sends the encoder stream outbound to YouTube. Do not open arbitrary inbound ports merely to make that outbound connection work. Only permit the inbound access needed for administration or for a specific, understood service. Check both OCI network rules and the Linux image’s own firewall behavior.

Install OBS using instructions for your exact Linux release

OBS installation on Linux is distribution- and version-dependent. Open the official OBS download page, select Linux, and follow the current instructions that match the VPS image. Confirm that the OBS package or build is compatible with that release before installing it. The exact installation command is intentionally not reproduced here because it must be verified against the current OBS instructions and the selected OS version.

After installation, verify that OBS launches and that its required encoder and media components are available. If you plan to use a codec other than H.264, check that both the installed OBS build and the instance can encode it. Do not assume that a command-line installation alone makes OBS ready to stream.

Plan how OBS will run on a headless server

A VPS usually has no physical monitor or logged-in desktop session. OBS normally presents a graphical interface, so you must establish how it will obtain a display and session on the server. Validate a headless-display approach that works with your OS image and OBS build before treating the machine as production-ready. The official OBS Linux page does not, by itself, establish a specific headless-display recipe.

Also decide how OBS starts after a reboot, how you will inspect its logs and output, and what happens if OBS exits or the VM restarts. A process restart is not proof that OBS reconnected successfully or that YouTube is receiving video and audio. Test recovery deliberately, then confirm the result in YouTube Live Control Room.

Configure OBS output for YouTube

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guide as the reference for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. For SDR H.264, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its current ingest table gives these H.264 examples:

Output format YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate YouTube-listed minimum
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 6 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s ingest guidance, not a promise that a specific OCI instance can encode the format or that a viewer will see a particular quality. YouTube’s table also lists AV1 and H.265 recommendations; use the row for the codec actually selected and supported by both the OBS build and instance. YouTube transcodes incoming streams for viewer playback.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the stream key without sharing it.
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service, and configure the server and key using the current YouTube/OBS interface. If using a custom RTMPS destination, use the server URL shown for that stream in YouTube Studio.
  3. Open Settings > Output and choose the encoder and bitrate mode appropriate to your installed OBS version. For SDR H.264, set CBR and select a bitrate guided by YouTube’s table and your measured capacity.
  4. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds, and do not exceed four seconds. Choose the frame rate and resolution you have tested on this instance.
  5. Set audio encoding to AAC or MP3, as supported by the selected configuration and YouTube’s encoder guidance.
  6. Check the scene, media source, audio routing, and any loop behavior. Confirm that the source is actually playing before starting the stream.

Test bandwidth, picture, sound, and recovery

YouTube says the total outgoing bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% extra capacity. For example, a 10 Mbps stream implies planning for at least 12 Mbps of sustained available upload under that recommendation. That calculation is not a guarantee for an OCI region or route; test the actual instance-to-YouTube path.

  • Run a preflight using representative video motion and audio, not a static test image alone.
  • Review YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and confirm the public watch page behaves as expected.
  • Watch OBS encoder load, dropped frames, and audio levels while the stream is running.
  • Test what happens if the OBS process stops, the network connection drops, or the instance reboots. Confirm separately that OBS restarts and that YouTube accepts the resumed stream.
  • For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand. For an always-on stream, establish routine checks and alerting rather than assuming the VPS will remain healthy.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and streaming tips cover preview, network reliability, and ongoing audio/video monitoring. A healthy VM is only one component: the encoder, route, stream key, and YouTube ingest must all be working.

Common problems and what to check

  • OBS opens but no desktop or scene is visible: The headless display/session is not configured or available to OBS. Revisit the display method for your precise Linux release and verify OBS is running in that session.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Check channel live eligibility, the selected destination, the stream key, and outbound connectivity. Rotate the key in YouTube Studio if it may have been exposed.
  • Dropped frames or unstable ingest: Compare total stream bitrate with sustained outbound capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce bitrate or output complexity and test again.
  • Encoder overload: Lower resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes and filters, or choose a more capable instance. Validate with the actual content; shape eligibility alone does not prove encoding capacity.
  • Stream stops after a reboot or OBS crash: The VM being online does not ensure the encoder has restarted. Validate startup and supervision behavior, then confirm reception in Live Control Room.
  • Picture arrives but sound is missing: Check OBS audio source selection, routing, levels, and the selected audio encoder, then review the YouTube preview.

Costs and an easier cloud option for prerecorded loops

OCI compute, storage, and network costs depend on the selected resources, region, and usage; check current OCI pricing and Free Tier terms before deploying. Self-hosting gives you control over OBS scenes and configuration, but you remain responsible for Linux maintenance, display/session setup, capacity testing, monitoring, and recovery.

If the goal is specifically a prerecorded YouTube loop rather than operating OBS on a VPS, YouTube’s encoder directory also lists hosted 24/7 streaming services such as Gyre. Its listing does not establish current price or independent reliability, so check the provider’s current terms and capabilities before choosing.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo lets you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
