How to Keep an Oracle Cloud YouTube Stream Running After SSH Disconnects

A practical nohup command and verification steps for keeping an Oracle Cloud YouTube encoder alive after SSH disconnects, plus the limits of logout protection.

Run the encoder with nohup, redirect its input and output, and explicitly background it with &:

nohup your-encoder-command >stream.log 2>&1 < /dev/null &

This protects a running command from the SSH logout hangup signal. It does not restart a crashed encoder, recover a stopped or rebooted virtual machine, repair a network failure, or ensure YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Those are separate problems.

What has to keep running

SSH is the remote terminal connection; the encoder is the process that sends video to YouTube. Closing the terminal should not end the encoder, and the encoder must continue sending valid video over the network for the YouTube broadcast to remain live. Starting a process detached from SSH solves only the first part.

For a one-off command, GNU nohup makes the command ignore hangup signals. It does not background the command on its own, so the trailing & is essential. Explicit redirection also avoids relying on terminal input or output after logout. GNU’s Coreutils 9.11 manual documents these behaviors: nohup invocation.

Start the encoder so it survives logout

  1. Connect to the Oracle Cloud instance and prepare the encoder command you already use to send the video to YouTube. Do not put your actual stream key in a public script, shared terminal transcript, or log.

  2. Run the command in this form, substituting your encoder command for your-encoder-command:

    nohup your-encoder-command >stream.log 2>&1 < /dev/null &

    >stream.log writes standard output to a log file, 2>&1 sends error output to the same file, and < /dev/null disconnects standard input from the terminal. The final & starts the command in the background. Choose a log-file location appropriate for your instance and ensure the account running the encoder can write there.

  3. Allow the encoder time to connect, then check stream.log for startup errors. You can also inspect whether the process remains present with a process-listing command such as ps -ef; match the encoder’s command carefully rather than assuming that any running process means the broadcast is healthy.

  4. Disconnect SSH, reconnect, and check the process and log again. Separately confirm in YouTube Studio that the live stream is receiving video and its stream health is acceptable. A surviving process is not proof that YouTube is receiving usable video.

Configure and verify the YouTube feed

Your encoder needs YouTube’s stream URL and the matching stream key. Use YouTube’s encoder setup guidance to configure those values: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Keep the key private; a log or script containing it can expose access to your live stream.

Choose encoder settings that fit the available upload connection. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. Test with representative audio and movement, and monitor stream health rather than judging success only by whether the encoder launched. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending content. That archive behavior is not a promise of uninterrupted delivery during a long broadcast, nor a recovery mechanism if the encoder or connection fails. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Oracle Cloud Streaming is a different service

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Streaming is a managed service for ingesting and consuming high-volume data messages. It is not YouTube video ingestion and will not keep an SSH-launched encoder alive. See Oracle’s Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Streaming FAQ.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel rather than keeping your own encoder process alive on an Oracle Cloud VM, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start with StreamNeo.
