Start with one soft, controllable light on your face—or face a window. Add fill only if the key light leaves shadows you do not want, and consider a subtle backlight only if you blend into the background. A three-light kit is not a requirement.
Build the light around your face
Your key light is the main source illuminating your face. Put it in front of you, near the camera, then check the camera preview. Moving it slightly to one side can add shape; move it back toward the camera if the shadows become too strong. B&H Photo Video’s streaming tips recommend a key light with controllable brightness.
Use a window when it gives you steady, useful light
Face a window to use daylight as a broad key source. A window to one side can also work if you prefer more directional light. Daylight changes with weather and time of day, so check the preview again when conditions shift. If the light varies too much for your schedule, an adjustable artificial source gives you more control. B&H eXplora describes window placement for creators in its lighting strategies and livestreaming introduction.
Choose a light you can position and adjust
A streaming key light is a practical starting point if you want controllable brightness. Check the image on your actual camera rather than relying on the lamp’s appearance in the room. B&H recommends natural or bright-white light for neutral-looking colors, but the right result depends on your camera and surroundings; the cited guidance does not establish one universal color temperature or brightness target.

Soften shadows with fill
If the key light creates harsh shadows on one side of your face, add softer fill on that side. B&H’s streaming document puts it plainly: “Use a softer ‘fill light’ to reduce shadows on your face from the keylight.” Reduce the fill or move it farther away if the face starts to look flat.
Try a reflector before buying a second light
A white card or reflector can bounce existing light back onto the shadow side without another powered source. Change its angle and distance to adjust where the reflected light lands and how strong it appears. B&H covers reflectors and bounce cards in its creator lighting strategies.

Keep the background under control
Bright lamps or windows behind you can pull attention away from your face. Keep strong background sources modest, then check the camera preview for distractions or a face that looks too dark by comparison. If your outline disappears against the background, try a restrained back or edge light aimed to separate you from it. It is an optional adjustment, not a required third light; excessive backlighting can distract. B&H explains the role of backlight in three-point portrait lighting.
Choose a setup that fits your space and look
| Setup | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Window as key | You have usable daylight and can face or angle toward the window. | Its brightness changes with time and conditions. |
| Ring light | You have a small desk and want a compact source for livestreaming or video calls. | It is one lighting option, not a universal solution; its direct look may not be what you prefer. |
| Key light plus fill | You want more control over light direction and facial shadows. | It takes more space and setup than a single source; a reflector can provide passive fill instead of another powered light. |
| Key light plus subtle edge light | Your subject and background blend together. | Extra light is unnecessary if you already separate clearly, and too much can distract. |
These are practical differences, not head-to-head test results. B&H discusses ring lights, reflectors, and bounce cards in its creator lighting guide.

Set up and check the image
- Place the key: Face a window or position an adjustable light in front of you. Start near the camera axis; shift it slightly to one side if you want more facial shape.
- Check the camera preview: Adjust brightness and placement until your face is clear and colors look natural. Make changes while watching the image the audience will see.
- Assess the shadows: If they are too strong, add soft fill or bounce light from a white card on the shadow side. Adjust its angle and distance.
- Inspect the background: Reduce distracting brightness behind you. Add a restrained edge light only if you blend into the background.
- Recheck when conditions change: Daylight can shift during a stream. If that makes your image inconsistent, use controllable artificial light.
This lighting approach applies to what the camera sees, whether you stream through a webcam or an encoder. YouTube’s live-streaming guide distinguishes those methods; the lighting setup itself does not depend on which one you use.
