To keep a prerecorded video streaming to YouTube around the clock from Mumbai, run FFmpeg on a cloud VM, loop the file, and publish to YouTube Live over RTMPS. Configure the process to restart after crashes and reboots, and monitor both the encoder and YouTube stream health: a single VM and connection are not an uptime guarantee.
What this setup does—and what it does not
The path is straightforward: a video file or generated feed goes into FFmpeg on your VM; FFmpeg encodes or passes through the media and sends it to YouTube Live. YouTube supplies the ingest address and stream key in Live Control Room. This is a self-managed encoder publishing one outbound feed, not Google’s managed Live Stream API.
For a Mumbai deployment, Google Cloud documents Mumbai as asia-south1 for its Live Stream API. That does not establish that every compute VM family is available there. Check the specific VM family, networking options, and capacity in your chosen provider’s console before designing around a region. Google also recommends considering latency, cost, resilience, and proximity to other cloud resources when selecting a location; for its managed API, an input or channel’s location cannot be changed after creation. A continuously running process can still be interrupted by a VM or process failure, a lost network path, a missing or damaged source file, or a YouTube ingest disconnect. Plan to detect and recover from those events rather than treating a running shell command as a 24/7 service.

Choose a VM or a managed streaming service
Direct FFmpeg on a VM
Use this approach when you need one outbound stream and can operate the server, encoder, monitoring, and recovery yourself. You choose the source and output settings and are responsible for restarting and diagnosing the process.
Google Cloud Live Stream API
A managed transcoding service may be a better fit when you need managed input and channel outputs, multiple renditions, or distribution beyond a single encoder output. Its operating limits and charges are distinct from those of a basic VM. Google Cloud says an active Live Stream API session lasts 24 hours and a channel may be restarted after that period. This limit applies to that managed API; the reviewed documentation does not establish the same limit for an FFmpeg process publishing directly from a VM. Google Cloud quotas and limits.
Compare the options against your actual requirements: number of outputs, whether you need transcoding, region and latency, restart and redundancy design, and total costs. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API pricing depends on region and resource and output configuration, with ongoing charges for active channels and started distribution endpoints. Prepare YouTube Live and the VM
Confirm the channel is ready
Before uploading a file, verify that live streaming is available for the YouTube channel and that you can access Live Control Room. Choose the intended visibility—private, unlisted, or public—for your test and eventual broadcast. Review YouTube’s policies for the content you plan to stream, including copyright and reused-content rules; a technically healthy feed does not grant rights to music, footage, or other material, nor does it guarantee monetization eligibility.

Choose an operating-system image and VM family available in your intended region, then verify the necessary outbound network access. There is no universal instance size established for this workload: CPU demand depends on whether FFmpeg encodes or copies the stream, and on resolution, codec, and frame rate. Test the actual workload on the selected VM rather than assuming a fixed CPU or memory requirement.
Install FFmpeg using the package manager for your OS. Google Cloud’s documentation gives sudo apt install ffmpeg as an example for a compatible Debian/Ubuntu image; package names, versions, and availability depend on the image. Retrieve and protect the stream destination
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. If the default URL is RTMP, explicitly select or reveal the RTMPS option where available.
- Use the exact URL and key for this stream in your encoder. Do not reuse an example endpoint, publish the key in a script repository, or expose it in logs or world-readable files. Regenerate the key in YouTube if it is exposed.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP inside TLS; its RTMPS ingest connection uses port 443. The destination and key are provided through Live Control Room. YouTube RTMPS setup and RTMPS ingestion protocol.
Set encoder parameters for a stable feed
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its current help page’s main H.264 table lists 1080p30 at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Match the selected bitrate to a reliable upload connection, leaving headroom rather than saturating the VM’s available bandwidth. YouTube encoder settings.

- Resolution and frame rate: Match the source and the viewing need; do not upscale a lower-resolution file just to select a larger output.
- Bitrate: Use CBR and select a rate supported consistently by the VM’s outbound path. For H.264 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval, and do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3 and confirm that the source actually contains the intended audio track.
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS and use the endpoint and key copied from Live Control Room.
Loop a prerecorded video with FFmpeg
For a local file on the VM, the core FFmpeg pattern is -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4: -re reads at native media rate and -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. AWS documents this loop pattern in an FFmpeg example that sends to an RTMPS endpoint; it is an adaptable example, not a YouTube-specific command or a production guarantee. A starting command for a YouTube RTMPS stream, with placeholders replaced by your own values, is:

-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"This example encodes H.264 at 1080p30 only if the input and any scaling choices produce that output; it sets a 2-second GOP at 30 fps. The 14 Mbps video rate reflects YouTube’s listed H.264 1080p30 recommended bitrate, not a promise that this setting is appropriate for every source, VM, or connection. Adjust output dimensions and frame rate to match your material and YouTube’s current guidance. If the file already matches your desired encoding, stream-copying may reduce CPU use, but it is appropriate only when its codecs and stream properties are compatible with YouTube and your target settings.
The URL format shown is illustrative. Use YouTube’s actual RTMPS ingest URL and key; do not paste a sample key or leave the real key in shell history, process listings, or logs. For a long-running deployment, store credentials with access restricted to the service account and test how your chosen process manager supplies them.

Test before making it public
- Start with a short private or unlisted test using representative motion and audio.
- Check Live Control Room for stream health and any warnings; confirm that video and audio are present and that playback remains stable.
- Watch at least one full loop to verify the transition point, audio continuity, and that FFmpeg does not exit when the file ends.
- Only then switch to the intended visibility and continuous schedule.

A 24/7 deployment needs more than a looping input. Configure the encoder as a managed service or container that starts after VM reboot and restarts after an unexpected exit. There is no provider-neutral, tested service unit or failover design established here, so validate the exact service configuration, permissions, and restart behavior on your VM image.
- Process health: Alert if FFmpeg exits or repeatedly restarts; inspect logs for input, codec, authentication, and network errors.
- Source health: Keep the file at a stable path with enough storage and permissions for the service account. Check that it remains readable and that the loop transition behaves as expected.
- Upload health: Monitor outbound bandwidth and network errors. A bitrate that exceeds dependable capacity can cause dropped frames or ingest instability.
- YouTube health: Check Live Control Room warnings and stream health, especially after a VM reboot or reconnect.
- Recovery: Test a process crash, VM reboot, and temporary network loss before relying on the setup. Confirm whether the process manager restarts FFmpeg and whether YouTube resumes receiving the stream.
- Redundancy: A single VM, source, and route remain single points of failure. A separate recovery host or other redundancy adds cost and operational complexity and must be designed and tested for the chosen provider.
Estimate the real cost
A useful monthly estimate for a VM encoder includes compute hours, outbound data transfer, storage for the media, and any managed-service charges. Estimate data transfer from the chosen output bitrate and streaming hours, then apply the selected provider’s current regional egress rates and billing rules. The total depends on the provider, VM SKU, region, bitrate, and whether a managed service is involved; no comparable Mumbai VM price or egress amount is established here.
