Scheduling creates an upcoming event and watch page; it does not start the broadcast or keep a feed playing by itself. At service time, connect an encoder with the event’s stream URL and key, start sending your program, check the Live Control Room preview, and select Go live.
What “continuous” means on YouTube
A scheduled YouTube Live event gives viewers a place to return to and can let them set a reminder. It is separate from the encoder connection and the final go-live action. Scheduling alone does not provide unattended 24/7 playback, automatic restart, or guaranteed reconnection after an outage. For a service that must run continuously, choose and test a playout and recovery workflow that matches your staffing and reliability needs. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe creating and operating an event, not a promise of continuous unattended playback.
Schedule the worship event in YouTube Studio
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open Manage.
- Create the event. Choose Schedule Stream. Create a new stream or reuse settings from an earlier event, then set the event details and schedule.
- Check the event’s settings. Confirm the intended visibility and other details before sharing the watch page. Share the upcoming event link with your congregation so viewers can find it and, if available to them, set a reminder.
- Keep the stream key private. The key is the credential your encoder uses to send video to YouTube. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the feed. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. See Manage live stream settings.
Choose an encoder for the service
YouTube supports both software encoding and hardware encoding; a hardware encoder is not required. Software may suit a church that already has a capable computer and a trained operator. Dedicated hardware may suit a higher-production setup or a team that wants encoding handled by separate equipment, but it adds equipment cost. Decide based on the computer and network you already have, the production you need, and who will operate it. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events while also describing software encoding. YouTube live streaming tips
Set the feed quality and transport
- Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it, and set a constant bitrate.
- Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- For H.264, YouTube’s published recommended bitrate is 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are recommendations, not guarantees; image quality also depends on the encoder, connection, and production.
- Test your real program feed, including representative movement and audio. Check that your available upload capacity can sustain the chosen settings. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Start the scheduled broadcast
- Prepare early. YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
- Connect the encoder. Select the scheduled stream in the encoder and enter or select the stream URL and key provided in YouTube Studio. Start sending the feed.
- Verify the preview. In Live Control Room, confirm the video and audio are correct and check stream health before going live.
- Confirm access. Check that the event is reachable from your channel or watch page and on a mobile device. If you are keeping a local recording, verify that the file is growing.
- Go live. When the preview and event details are ready, select Go live in Live Control Room. Monitor audio, picture, and stream health throughout the service.
If you plan to use a backup encoder, test the failover before relying on it. YouTube’s operational recommendations are in its Streaming tips.

Clear worship music rights before streaming
Church use does not automatically establish permission to stream a song or recording. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the streamer to have necessary rights, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Verify that the permissions cover the specific songs and recordings, the territories, and online live use. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match may lead to a warning or a placeholder image; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. If you have licensed material, ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be added to its Content ID allowlist. Details are in Copyright issues with live streams.

Plan for continuity and the replay separately
A scheduled event is not a 24/7 playout system. Decide who or what will keep the feed running and what happens if the encoder or connection stops; test that recovery path before depending on it. Do not assume YouTube scheduling will restart a dropped feed.
Replay capture has a separate limit: YouTube says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the full service matters, make a local recording or divide a long-running program into shorter stream blocks. See Archive live streams.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The scheduled page exists, but viewers see no live video: Scheduling has created the event, not started the broadcast. Start the encoder feed, check the Live Control Room preview, then select Go live.
- The encoder will not connect: Confirm that it is using the correct event’s stream URL and key. If the key was exposed or may be compromised, reset it in Studio and replace the saved key in the encoder.
- Video or audio is unstable: Check stream health, network upload capacity, and the actual program feed. Test with representative motion and audio; reduce the output settings if the connection cannot sustain them.
- A worship song triggers a copyright warning or interruption: Stop using the material if necessary and confirm that the relevant recording and composition are licensed for the stream. If licensed, contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting for your channel.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be archived automatically. Keep a local recording or use shorter stream blocks when an archive is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
