To permanently add subtitles to a video, use HandBrake: open the video, add or select the subtitle track in the Subtitles tab, enable Burn In, then encode and check the result. Burned subtitles become part of the picture and viewers cannot switch them off. If viewers should be able to choose whether subtitles appear, keep them as a separate subtitle track instead.
Hard-burned or selectable subtitles: which do you need?
Hard-burned subtitles are written over the video image. They remain visible in the exported video and cannot be toggled off like a separate subtitle track. Selectable, or “soft,” subtitles remain a separate track, so viewers can turn them on or off when their player supports the format.
- Choose hard-burned subtitles when they must appear consistently wherever the video is played or shared.
- Choose a soft track when viewers should be able to hide subtitles or select among language tracks. Compatibility depends on the container and playback software.
HandBrake documents support for user-supplied SRT files, embedded text subtitles such as SRT, ASS and closed captions, and bitmap subtitles from DVD or Blu-ray sources. See the HandBrake subtitle guide for supported inputs and options.
Burn subtitles into a video with HandBrake
- Identify the subtitle source. Open the video in HandBrake and check whether it has embedded subtitle tracks. If you have a separate file, such as an SRT, have it ready to import. When there are multiple tracks, identify the right language and track before encoding.
- Add or select the track. Open the Subtitles tab. Select an embedded track or add the external subtitle file.
- Enable Burn In. Turn on the burn-in option for the track you want visible in the picture. HandBrake can burn one subtitle track into an encoded file, so choose the track that should appear permanently.
- Check SRT encoding and timing. If you imported an SRT, verify that characters display correctly and dialogue matches the audio. HandBrake provides subtitle offset adjustment in milliseconds. If timing is wrong, adjust the offset and test a short representative section before encoding the full video. A mismatched character encoding can prevent a subtitle track from appearing or cause playback problems.
- Choose a container for your destination. Consider whether you need selectable tracks as well as burned subtitles, and check the destination player’s support. Container support differs; the next section explains the documented distinctions.
- Encode and review the export. Play the resulting file. Check spelling, synchronization, line breaks, readability, and whether text covers important picture details. Sample the beginning, middle and end, or watch the full video when accurate timing throughout is essential.
HandBrake’s subtitle documentation covers burn-in and offset options. Previewing the source and checking the encoded file are practical safeguards; they do not replace reviewing the complete export when errors would be costly.

Container and subtitle-track limitations
A burned subtitle is part of the image, but a separate subtitle track must be supported by both the container and the player. HandBrake’s documented container behavior differs by format:
| Container | HandBrake-documented behavior | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 | Can burn one subtitle; PGS is not documented as a pass-through option. | Burn subtitles when they must appear in MP4. Do not assume a PGS track can be retained as a separate track. |
| MKV | Can pass through multiple PGS tracks and burn one subtitle. | Useful when retaining multiple PGS tracks matters; verify that the intended player supports the tracks. |
| WebM | Supports hard subtitles, not soft subtitles in the cited HandBrake documentation. | Use burned subtitles if you need subtitles in a WebM output. |
These distinctions are from HandBrake’s documentation for subtitles and containers. Check current HandBrake guidance and the target platform’s requirements before choosing an output format.

Burn subtitles with HandBrakeCLI
For command-line encoding, HandBrakeCLI documents --subtitle-burned for burning a selected subtitle track and --srt-burn for burning an imported SRT. Track indexes depend on the tracks available in the source and the options supplied; do not copy an assumed index without checking your input.
- Inspect the source and determine the subtitle track or SRT file you intend to burn.
- Consult the current HandBrakeCLI command-line reference for the correct option syntax and track index.
- Run the encode with the applicable burn option, then play the exported file and check timing, appearance and playback in the intended player.
Common problems and fixes
- No subtitles appear: Confirm that the intended track was added and that Burn In is enabled for it. With an SRT, check its character encoding; HandBrake notes that a wrong code can result in no subtitle track or player problems.
- Subtitles are out of sync: Adjust the SRT offset in milliseconds, then test the affected section again before encoding the full video.
- The wrong language appears: Recheck the selected source track or imported subtitle file; do not rely on track order alone when several tracks are present.
- Subtitles look different in another player: Confirm whether the subtitles are burned or separate. A burned track is part of the image; a soft track depends on player and container support. HandBrake documents that ASS/SSA styling is preserved when burned, while passed-through text in MP4 may preserve fewer styling attributes.
- You cannot retain the subtitle tracks you expected: Check the container’s documented support and the source track type. In particular, HandBrake documents no PGS pass-through for MP4, while MKV can pass through multiple PGS tracks.
- Text covers important details or is hard to read: Review the export on the intended display. If placement or contrast is unsuitable, adjust the subtitle source or styling workflow before producing the final encode.
