To play a record through your speakers, the signal needs the right phono preamp—and passive speakers also need a power amplifier. The simplest setup is a turntable set to LINE connected by RCA cable to powered speakers. If your speakers are passive, connect the turntable through an amplifier or receiver before connecting speaker wire.
Three checks determine the right setup: whether the speakers are powered or passive, whether the turntable has a built-in phono preamp, and whether your amplifier has an input labeled PHONO. Match those components before you start connecting cables.
Quick guide: match the turntable output to the speaker system

The key label match is PHONO output to PHONO input and LINE output to LINE/AUX/CD input. A LINE signal into a PHONO input is usually too strong and can sound harsh or distorted. A PHONO signal into a LINE input is usually very quiet and thin because it still needs phono amplification and equalization. Step 1: Find out whether your speakers are powered
Powered (active) speakers have an amplifier inside. They need AC power and commonly have a volume control or remote and inputs such as RCA, AUX, optical, or Bluetooth. In a powered pair, one speaker may connect to the other with a supplied cable. A powered pair can accept a line-level signal directly if it has a compatible input.

Passive speakers have no built-in amplifier. Their rear panels typically have binding posts, spring clips, or bare-wire terminals rather than a power cord and line inputs. They must connect to an amplifier or receiver using speaker wire. Do not connect passive speakers directly to a turntable’s RCA outputs or a phono preamp’s RCA outputs: those are signal-level connections, not amplified speaker outputs. Fluance distinguishes powered speakers from an amplifier-and-passive-speaker system in its setup guidance.
Step 2: Check whether the turntable has a phono preamp
Look near the turntable’s RCA outputs for a switch or label such as PHONO/LINE, PHONO EQ/THRU, PREAMP ON/OFF, or OUTPUT SELECTOR. If there is no switch, check the exact model’s manual rather than assuming it has a preamp.
A phono cartridge produces a low-level signal that needs phono gain and equalization (often called RIAA equalization). That phono stage may be built into the turntable, an amplifier/receiver’s PHONO input, or a separate phono preamp. Some powered systems may also provide a phono input. Use one phono stage in the signal chain, not two. The switch terminology differs between models, so follow the manual; on many turntables, LINE means the built-in stage is active, while PHONO or THRU bypasses it. Audio-Technica documents that behavior for the AT-LP70X in its selector instructions.

Step 3: Choose the wiring path that fits your equipment
Path A: Turntable with built-in preamp → powered speakers
- Turn off the turntable and speakers before connecting.
- Set the turntable’s output switch to LINE.
- Connect the turntable’s left and right RCA plugs to the speakers’ RCA, LINE, or AUX input.
- Plug the speakers into power and select that input on the speakers.
- Start playback and raise the volume gradually.
Red is normally the right channel; white or black is normally the left. Match the plugs to the corresponding R and L inputs. This direct connection is appropriate for active speakers with a compatible line input; see Audio-Technica’s active-speaker instructions.
Path B: Turntable with built-in preamp → amplifier/receiver → passive speakers
- Set the turntable to LINE.
- Connect its RCA outputs to a line-level input on the amplifier or receiver, such as AUX, CD, LINE, or AUDIO. Do not use PHONO for this line-level signal.
- Connect the amplifier’s speaker terminals to the passive speakers with speaker wire, observing the + and − markings at both ends.
- Select the input you used and begin at low volume.
The amplifier powers the passive speakers; the turntable’s built-in preamp only prepares the signal. If the receiver has a PHONO input but the turntable is already set to LINE, choose a line-level input instead.
Path C: Turntable without a built-in preamp → amplifier/receiver with PHONO input
- Connect the turntable’s RCA outputs to the receiver’s PHONO input.
- If the turntable has a ground wire and the receiver has a GND terminal, attach the wire there.
- Connect passive speakers to the amplifier/receiver’s speaker terminals if they are not already connected.
- Select PHONO on the receiver and start playback at low volume.
The PHONO input supplies the phono stage this turntable needs. A ground wire is separate from the left and right audio channels; connect it only to the equipment’s designated terminal and follow the manuals. Yamaha illustrates the PHONO and GND connections in its AV receiver guide.

Path D: Turntable without a preamp → external phono preamp → powered speakers
- Connect the turntable’s RCA outputs to the external preamp’s PHONO IN.
- Connect the turntable ground wire to the preamp’s GND terminal if one is provided and the manual calls for it.
- Connect the preamp’s LINE OUT to the powered speakers’ RCA, LINE, or AUX input.
- Power the devices, select the speaker input, and raise volume gradually.
The external unit provides phono gain and equalization; the powered speakers provide the power amplification for the drivers. Low volume is a common clue that the phono stage is missing or bypassed. Audioengine’s troubleshooting note describes this issue.
Path E: Turntable with built-in preamp → receiver with PHONO input
Choose one phono stage and match the input:
- Use the receiver’s phono stage: set the turntable to PHONO, THRU, or bypass (the model’s exact label varies), then connect to the receiver’s PHONO input.
- Use the turntable’s phono stage: set it to LINE, then connect to the receiver’s AUX, CD, LINE, or AUDIO input.
Do not connect a LINE output to PHONO or run both phono stages at once. Yamaha specifically advises bypassing the turntable’s equalization when using a receiver’s PHONO input; see its connection guide.
Step 4: Power up, select the input, and test playback
After checking the connections, turn on the system, choose the input you actually used, and start with the volume low. Raise it gradually. Confirm that audio comes from both speakers. If you are making external connections, switching equipment off first reduces the chance of pops; consult the equipment manuals for their connection and power-up instructions. Yamaha recommends switching equipment off and disconnecting power before certain external connections in its manual.

For an ordinary stereo RCA cable, red is usually right and white or black left. A separate turntable ground wire, when present, is not another audio channel. If your amplifier or preamp has no grounding terminal, do not attach the wire to an arbitrary metal object; use the manufacturer’s instructions.

Bluetooth speakers
Wireless playback can work if the turntable transmits Bluetooth, or if a suitable Bluetooth transmitter is connected to the turntable’s line output. A turntable without a built-in phono stage needs an external phono preamp before a line-input transmitter. Pairing steps, codec support, and latency vary by product. Bluetooth is a valid convenience option, but a wired connection is usually easier to diagnose when you are setting up the system.

Check the soundbar’s inputs before buying adapters. A compatible analog input can accept a turntable’s LINE output; a PHONO-level turntable needs a phono stage first. If the soundbar only accepts optical, HDMI ARC, or Bluetooth, you may need an appropriate analog-to-digital converter or Bluetooth transmitter after the phono stage. A passive RCA-to-HDMI cable does not convert analog audio to HDMI, and the soundbar may not preserve conventional left/right stereo separation.

USB and headphone amplifiers
USB audio works only when both the turntable and receiving device support a compatible USB-audio connection; a USB port is not interchangeable with RCA analog outputs. A headphone amplifier is not automatically a speaker amplifier. Use one only if its inputs and outputs are appropriate for your system, including a separate powered output if you intend to drive speakers.
Troubleshoot by the symptom
No sound
- Check that the turntable and speakers or amplifier are powered, and that the record is rotating.
- Remove the stylus guard, unlock the tonearm, and lower the stylus correctly.
- Confirm the speakers or receiver are set to the input connected to the turntable.
- Check that the turntable’s output mode matches that input: LINE to AUX/LINE, or PHONO to PHONO.
- Make sure both RCA plugs are seated. If using passive speakers, confirm there is an amplifier in the chain and speaker wire is connected securely.
- If the turntable lacks a preamp, confirm that the signal passes through a PHONO input or an external phono preamp.
- For Bluetooth, verify pairing and select the paired input or source.
Very quiet, thin sound
The common cause is a missing phono stage or a turntable set to PHONO while connected to a line input. Set the turntable to LINE if it has a built-in preamp and you are using AUX/LINE, or add an external phono preamp. If it has no preamp and you are using a receiver, connect it to PHONO. Also check that you have not connected to the wrong output or input.
Loud, harsh, or distorted sound
Check for a LINE output plugged into PHONO, or two phono stages active at once. For a receiver’s PHONO input, set the turntable to PHONO/THRU/bypass. For AUX/LINE, set the turntable to LINE. Confirm the amplifier input and any cartridge settings match the equipment manual.

Loud hum
- Connect the turntable ground wire to the intended GND terminal if the receiving equipment provides one.
- Reseat the RCA plugs and keep signal cables away from power cords, chargers, and power bricks.
- Try positioning the turntable and amplifier away from transformers or other equipment that may introduce interference.
- Check the manuals before changing grounding arrangements. A ground wire can reduce turntable hum, but it will not cure every source of hum.
Only one speaker works
Check the left and right RCA plugs, amplifier balance control, selected source, powered-speaker link cable, and speaker-wire connections. On passive speakers, check that each wire is secure and polarity is consistent. If the issue remains, test one cable or component at a time to locate where the channel drops out.
The record skips or playback sounds wrong
This is often a turntable setup or record/stylus issue rather than a speaker-routing issue. Check that the platter and belt are installed correctly, the turntable is level and stable, the stylus is clean and undamaged, and the speed setting is right for the record. On an assembled turntable, balance the tonearm and set tracking force and anti-skate to the cartridge or turntable manufacturer’s specifications. What equipment do you actually need?
- Fewest components: a turntable with built-in phono preamp plus powered speakers with a compatible line input.
- Already own passive speakers: an integrated amplifier or receiver plus a phono stage somewhere in the chain (a built-in turntable preamp, the receiver’s PHONO input, or an external phono preamp).
- Turntable has no preamp, powered speakers are line-input only: an external phono preamp between the turntable and speakers.
- Want component flexibility: separate phono stage, amplifier, and passive speakers. This adds boxes and cabling but lets you change components independently.
An external phono preamp can solve a compatibility problem or let you choose a separate stage; it is not automatically better-sounding than a built-in one. If your cartridge is a moving-coil (MC) model, check that the phono stage supports that cartridge and its output level. Some low-output MC cartridges need more gain or a boosting transformer; Yamaha notes this exception in its receiver documentation.
