Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The fastest fix is to identify what you mean by “background music.” If a voice is describing scenes, turn off Audio Description. If the TV speaks its menus, disable Voice Guide or Audio Guidance. If the sound is a second language or alternate broadcast, reset SAP/MTS or choose the primary audio track. If music is part of the program’s original soundtrack, your TV usually cannot remove it completely—but dialogue-enhancement settings can make speech easier to understand.
Use the troubleshooting steps below in order. They apply to smart TVs, antenna and cable broadcasts, streaming apps, soundbars, and surround-sound systems, although exact menu names vary by model, year, region, and operating system.
First, identify the kind of “background music” you are hearing
Before changing bass, volume, or speaker settings, listen for the pattern:
| What you hear | Most likely cause | Where to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| A voice describes actions, locations, facial expressions, or scene changes. | Audio Description, Video Description, or Descriptive Audio | TV, streaming app, cable box, or other source |
| The TV reads menus, volume changes, channels, or settings aloud. | Voice Guide, Audio Guidance, or a screen reader | TV accessibility settings |
| The show is in another language or contains an unusual alternate mix. | SAP, MTS, Secondary Audio, or an alternate audio track | TV, set-top box, or playback device |
| The problem occurs only in one app, video, or program. | That title’s selected audio track or an app-specific setting | Playback audio controls |
| Music is blended into the normal soundtrack while speech is still present. | Music that is part of the finished program mix | Dialogue enhancement or a better speaker setup |
This distinction matters because Audio Description and Voice Guide are not the same thing, and neither is the same as music that was mixed into a documentary, film, or television program.

1. Check the playback audio track first
If the issue affects only one app or program, pause playback and open the player’s audio menu. Look for labels such as Audio, Audio & Subtitles, Languages, or Audio Track.
- Pause the program.
- Open the playback controls.
- Choose Audio, Audio & Subtitles, or a similar option.
- Select the original or primary language.
- Avoid tracks labeled Audio Description, Descriptive Audio, Commentary, SAP, or an alternate language unless that is the track you want.
Netflix
Start playback, open the player controls, select Audio & Subtitles, and choose the preferred audio language or the non-descriptive track. The available choices vary by title, device, and region. If there is no alternative audio track, the program may simply not provide one.
Apple TV app and Apple TV 4K
During playback, open the controls, choose Audio, and select an available language or standard audio track. Apple notes that audio choices depend on the title, country or region, and device.
YouTube
Some YouTube videos provide alternate or dubbed audio tracks. Open the video’s audio settings when available and select the original or preferred track. This option appears only when the creator or distributor has supplied multiple tracks.
If changing the track fixes the problem, no TV speaker adjustment is necessary. The unwanted “music” was probably an alternate mix, descriptive track, commentary track, or language selection rather than music embedded in the program.
2. Turn off Audio Description or Video Description
If a narrator talks over the program and explains what is happening on screen, disable Audio Description—sometimes called Video Description or Descriptive Audio.
On many LG TVs
Try:
Settings → All Settings → General → Accessibility → Audio Description → Off
Older LG models may use the label Video Description. Some LG televisions also expose audio-description controls through a program’s audio options.

On Apple TV 4K
Go to:
Settings → Accessibility → Audio Descriptions
You can also open the playback Audio Options menu and select a standard track when one is available.
Audio Description is supplied by the broadcaster, streaming service, or program provider. It is not present in every title. If the narration continues after you disable it on the television, check the device supplying the picture and sound—such as a cable box, satellite receiver, streaming stick, or game console. That device may have its own Audio Description setting.
3. Disable Voice Guide or Audio Guidance if the TV is speaking outside the program
If the voice announces menu items, channels, volume levels, or settings—but does not describe the documentary or show—your television’s screen reader is probably enabled.
Samsung TVs
On current Samsung models, try:
Home → Settings → All Settings → General or General & Privacy → Accessibility → Voice Guide Settings → Voice Guide → Off

LG TVs
Try:
Settings → All Settings → General → Accessibility → Audio Guidance → Off
On some LG remotes, holding the Mute button can open accessibility shortcuts or accidentally activate Audio Guidance. If the feature turned on unexpectedly, check whether the mute button was held down.
Voice Guide and Audio Guidance are separate from Audio Description. Turning off the screen reader will stop menu narration, but it will not necessarily remove a narrator from a program.

4. Reset SAP, MTS, or Secondary Audio
If the problem affects antenna or cable channels, look for an audio setting named SAP, MTS, Secondary Audio, Audio Mode, or Audio Language.
Choose one of these options if available:
- Stereo
- Main
- Primary
- Original language
On some Sony televisions, SAP controls are under Audio or Closed Caption. Some remotes include a dedicated MTS/SAP/AUDIO button. If a supported Sony TV has noisy or crackling SAP audio, Sony’s broadcast troubleshooting may suggest changing Auto SAP to Mono; that is a reception workaround, not a general way to remove music.
Important: if the picture and sound come through a cable box, satellite receiver, DVR, Blu-ray player, streaming stick, or game console, change the audio selection on that device. The TV may not control the source’s audio track.
Do not treat SAP as the likely cause when the problem occurs only in Netflix, YouTube, a Blu-ray disc, or a game. In those cases, inspect the app or source device first.
5. Test with surround sound and Dolby disabled
A wrong surround-sound configuration can make dialogue unusually quiet, music disproportionately loud, or voices sound as if they are missing. This is more likely after adding a soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI device, or new streaming equipment.
As a diagnostic test, temporarily switch the system to stereo or PCM:
- Play the same program through the TV’s built-in speakers.
- If the built-in speakers sound normal, inspect the soundbar or receiver configuration.
- Temporarily disable 5.1, Dolby, or surround output.
- Play the program again and compare the result.
YouTube TV
YouTube TV’s 5.1 audio depends on the device, speaker system, app version, and program. Google provides a 5.1 switch for troubleshooting. Turning 5.1 off can also restore access to some secondary-audio choices, including descriptive audio and additional languages.

Settings → Display & Sounds → Audio → Dolby Digital Output
For testing, choose a non-Dolby output or PCM when the connected television or audio system does not correctly support the Dolby format. Once speech and music sound normal, you can restore surround sound if the equipment is compatible.
If you use a separate receiver, also check its input mode, speaker layout, center-channel level, and digital-output format. An incorrect speaker layout can send dialogue to a center channel that is missing, muted, or connected incorrectly.
6. Use dialogue enhancement when the music is part of the original mix
If none of the audio-track settings changes the problem, the music may be part of the program’s finished soundtrack. A television normally cannot take a completed stereo or surround mix and cleanly delete only the music while preserving speech.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteInstead, look for a speech-focused sound mode named:
- Voice Boost
- Clear Voice
- Dialogue Enhancement
- Voice
- Amplify
- Speech
For example, Samsung’s Amplify mode raises mid and high frequencies to make voices easier to understand. YouTube’s Voice Boost, where supported, is designed to reduce distracting background sound while emphasizing speech.
These modes improve intelligibility; they do not guarantee that music will disappear. They can also make voices sound thinner, brighter, or less natural, so try the least aggressive setting first.
When a soundbar may help
If the music cannot be switched off because it is mixed into the program, a soundbar with dialogue enhancement may make speech more prominent and less tiring to follow. This is a clarity upgrade, not a music-removal device. The result depends on the program mix, the TV’s output format, the soundbar’s processing, and how the system is connected.

Test the TV speakers before buying anything. If the TV speakers sound acceptable but the soundbar does not, changing the soundbar’s voice mode or digital-input format may solve the issue without replacing it.

7. Troubleshoot a surround system separately
For viewers who already use an AV receiver or surround speakers, check these items:
- Confirm that a center speaker is connected and enabled in the receiver’s setup.
- Raise the center-channel level slightly if dialogue is consistently too quiet.
- Try the receiver’s dialogue or speech-enhancement control.
- Make sure the TV and receiver agree on PCM, Dolby, or another supported output format.
- Test a different HDMI input and the TV’s internal speakers to isolate the source.
A center-channel speaker or compatible AV receiver can improve the prominence of dialogue in a properly configured surround system. It cannot reliably remove music from a completed soundtrack, and it is not a sensible first purchase if the real problem is Audio Description, SAP, or a wrong app track.
Brand and device quick reference
Samsung
- Menu narration: Home → Settings → All Settings → General/General & Privacy → Accessibility → Voice Guide Settings → Voice Guide → Off.
- Speech clarity: Settings → Sound → Sound Mode → Amplify, with additional controls under Sound → Expert Settings on supported models.
- Broadcast audio: look for MTS, SAP, or multi-track audio options; labels vary by model and input.
LG
- Menu narration: Settings → All Settings → General → Accessibility → Audio Guidance → Off.
- Program narration: Settings → All Settings → General → Accessibility → Audio Description or Video Description → Off.
- Broadcast language: on many recent models, Settings → All Settings → General → System → Language → Audio Language. This only works when the digital broadcast supplies multiple languages.
Sony
- SAP/MTS: check Audio or Closed Caption, or use the MTS/SAP/AUDIO button if your remote has one.
- External sources: change the audio setting on the cable box, receiver, or other source when it supplies the signal.
Streaming services
- Netflix: playback controls → Audio & Subtitles.
- Apple TV: playback controls → Audio; system-level descriptive narration is under Settings → Accessibility → Audio Descriptions on Apple TV 4K.
- YouTube: use the audio-track control when a video supplies alternate tracks; use Voice Boost when that playback feature is available.
- YouTube TV: temporarily turn 5.1 off when surround playback produces an abnormal mix or prevents secondary-audio selection.
What will not reliably remove the music
- Lowering the bass: this changes low frequencies but does not remove music, and it may make the program sound thin.
- Muting one speaker: this can remove dialogue along with music and damage the stereo or surround balance.
- Changing left-right balance: some mixes place music and dialogue differently, but this is unpredictable and usually makes the overall audio worse.
- A generic noise-cancelling device: ordinary noise cancellation is not designed to separate music embedded in a television soundtrack.
- Buying a soundbar immediately: dialogue processing may help, but it cannot guarantee music removal. First rule out an alternate track, Audio Description, SAP, or a surround-format problem.
Substantial reduction is possible only when the broadcaster or service provides a separate audio track, an alternate mix, or specialized external processing. Even advanced processing may create artifacts or remove parts of speech along with music.
A simple troubleshooting checklist
- Does the voice describe the scenes? Turn off Audio Description or Video Description.
- Does the TV speak only when you use menus or change volume? Turn off Voice Guide or Audio Guidance.
- Does the issue happen only on one app or program? Open that player’s Audio or Audio & Subtitles menu.
- Is the source antenna or cable? Reset SAP, MTS, Secondary Audio, or Audio Mode to Stereo/Main/Primary.
- Does the issue occur through a cable box, streaming stick, receiver, or console? Change the setting on that source device.
- Did it begin after adding a soundbar or receiver? Test TV speakers, then disable 5.1 or Dolby temporarily.
- Is the music present in every available track? Use Voice Boost, Clear Voice, Amplify, or Dialogue Enhancement.
- Before requesting model-specific help, record the TV model, software version if available, input source, app, program, and whether the issue occurs on TV speakers or external audio.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my TV narrating everything I see?
A narrator describing actions, locations, or scene changes usually indicates Audio Description or Video Description. Disable it in the TV, streaming app, cable box, or other device supplying the audio.
Why does my TV talk when I change the volume or open a menu?
Voice Guide, Audio Guidance, or another screen-reader feature is enabled. Samsung places it under Accessibility → Voice Guide Settings; LG generally places it under Accessibility → Audio Guidance.
Can I remove music from a documentary without removing the voices?
Usually not if the music is part of the finished soundtrack. Try a separate audio track first, then use dialogue enhancement or a speech-focused sound mode. These can emphasize speech but cannot reliably delete embedded music.
Why does the problem happen through my cable box but not my TV apps?
The cable box may be selecting SAP, Audio Description, or another audio track independently of the television. Change the audio setting on the cable box rather than only changing the TV’s settings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will turning down bass remove background music?
No. Bass controls only part of the frequency range and will not separate music from dialogue. It may also make the program sound unnatural.
The Bottom Line
Start with the audio track, not the equalizer: choose the primary track, turn off Audio Description, disable Voice Guide if the menus are speaking, and reset SAP or MTS for broadcast TV. If the music remains in every track, it is probably part of the original mix. In that case, test stereo or PCM and use Voice Boost, Amplify, or Dialogue Enhancement to make speech clearer—without expecting complete music removal.
