When YouTube reports an “incorrect video size (resolution)” warning, first compare the encoder’s actual output width and height with the resolution selected in YouTube Live Control Room’s Ingestion Settings. YouTube says the dimensions must match. If your encoder or source changes resolution during a 24/7 broadcast, do not assume YouTube will preserve continuity if you change settings mid-stream: test the exact workflow before using it live, or schedule a transition.
Start with the exact warning in Live Control Room
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and read the full message beside the Health Indicator, including its timestamp. YouTube says health messages identify the reported issue; a continuing error may reappear if it remains unresolved. Red errors are critical, while yellow errors indicate a moderate problem that can degrade stream quality. Fix the reported category rather than changing unrelated encoder settings. YouTube’s stream health troubleshooting guidance.
Fix an incorrect video-size warning
Compare the selected resolution with the actual output
- In Live Control Room, check the resolution selected on the Ingestion Settings page.
- In your encoder, inspect the outgoing video width and height—not just the source file’s resolution or a preset’s name.
- Make the encoder send the same dimensions as the selected YouTube resolution. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance states: “Your video must be the height and width of the resolution that you chose on the Ingestion Settings page.” See the official explanation.
- If the source changes size but the encoder keeps sending the configured output size, verify the encoder is scaling or maintaining that output as intended. If it changes the outgoing dimensions, correct the encoder output or the selected YouTube setting so they agree.
A resolution shown as unsupported or non-optimal is a reason to check that match, not evidence by itself that one particular cause applies.
Choose automatic detection or a deliberate manual setting
YouTube’s default recommendation is automatic resolution and frame-rate detection. If you need a fixed setting, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution. In that configuration, confirm that the encoder continues sending the configured dimensions even when its source changes. YouTube detects the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, then transcodes the incoming stream into multiple formats for viewers. YouTube’s setup guidance.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Configuration | What to check | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic detection | Confirm the outgoing encoder feed is stable and monitor the health messages when the source changes. | YouTube’s default recommended approach when you do not need to pin a particular resolution and frame rate. |
| Manual resolution | Set the manual option with a custom stream key and ensure the encoder keeps sending those dimensions. | When you need a deliberately selected resolution and can keep the encoder output aligned with it. |
Check bandwidth, bitrate, and encoder settings
If the selected resolution needs more bandwidth than your connection can reliably supply, YouTube says to consider lowering that selected resolution. Check the current encoder guidance for bitrate recommendations by ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate; the figures can change, so use the current table rather than an older copied value. Measure available upload capacity—download speed does not establish that your upstream connection can sustain the stream.
- YouTube’s network tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Account for both primary and backup feeds where applicable. Network guidance.
- The current general encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 options; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. These are general settings, not confirmation that every codec is available in every stream configuration. Review the current settings page.
- Do not reset a stream key just because the resolution changes. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish that a normal resolution change requires a key reset; treat the key as a credential/address used by the encoder to send the feed, and investigate it if there is a key-related error. YouTube stream-key guidance.
Keep primary and backup streams compatible
If your encoder uses failover, compare the primary and backup feeds. YouTube lists resolution, codec, interlacing, profile, bitrate, frame rate, and audio settings as items that should match between them. Test failover instead of assuming the backup will take over correctly. YouTube’s encoder and backup-stream guidance.

Handle resolution changes carefully on a 24/7 stream
The reviewed YouTube guidance requires sent dimensions to match the selected resolution, but it does not promise a no-interruption procedure for changing resolution during an already-running 24/7 broadcast. As an operational precaution inferred from that matching rule, keep outgoing dimensions consistent during a live session. Test any intended change in advance; if your encoder cannot change output safely in place, schedule an appropriate transition. The exact behavior depends on your encoder and configuration.
For a planned change, test the intended source, output dimensions, bitrate, frame rate, and failover path before relying on them in the continuous broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live, monitoring health messages and the preview, and verifying that the stream is accessible. YouTube’s testing guidance.

Test the corrected setup before relying on it
- Run a test with representative video movement and audio, using the intended source and output settings.
- Confirm the dimensions sent by the encoder match the Ingestion Settings selection.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and Health Indicator for new messages.
- If you use backup ingestion, test failover and verify that the backup feed matches the primary settings.
- Verify that the stream is accessible before using the configuration for a long-running broadcast.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring encoder-based streams before a live event. See its testing recommendations.
Common causes and fixes
| What you see | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Incorrect video size (resolution)” | Encoder’s actual outgoing width and height versus the Ingestion Settings resolution. | Make those dimensions match; verify the encoder output rather than relying on the source or preset label. |
| Warning appears after the source changes size | Whether the encoder output dimensions changed with the source, especially with manual resolution enabled. | Keep the outgoing dimensions at the configured size, or test and plan a transition before changing the live output. |
| Quality degrades or health warnings persist at the chosen resolution | Available upload bandwidth and the bitrate appropriate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate. | Use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance; if upload capacity is insufficient, consider a lower selected resolution and preserve upload headroom. |
| Problem occurs during failover | Whether primary and backup agree on resolution, codec, interlacing, profile, bitrate, frame rate, and audio. | Align the listed settings and test failover. |
| Encoder cannot safely change resolution in place | The behavior of that encoder and the active stream configuration. | Test first and schedule a transition rather than assuming continuity. |
