For a 720p, 30 fps YouTube loop stream, set OBS output to 1280×720 at 30 fps, use CBR, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Choose the bitrate for the codec YouTube receives: YouTube Help recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at this resolution and frame rate. Treat those as ingest recommendations, not a promise that your internet connection can sustain them.
Recommended OBS settings for a 720p30 loop

The figures are YouTube Help / Google’s platform recommendations and minimums on its official encoder settings page, accessed in 2026; they are not independent performance measurements. The page groups bitrate by codec, resolution, and frame rate—not by whether footage is a loop.
Set the output resolution and frame rate
- In OBS, open Settings → Video.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. This is the resolution sent to YouTube.
- Set Common FPS Value to 30.
- Apply the changes. Confirm the stream preview and the YouTube Live Control Room show the intended output before relying on a long-running broadcast.
OBS distinguishes its stream output from the source or canvas: the Output (Scaled) Resolution controls the stream’s output size. If your project starts at another resolution, scaling it to 1280×720 can change the output dimensions without requiring your original media to be 720p.
Set bitrate, rate control, and keyframes
- Open Settings → Output and select the Streaming output settings. If OBS is in Simple output mode, set the streaming bitrate there; in Advanced mode, use the Streaming tab.
- Set Rate Control to CBR.
- Enter the recommended bitrate for the codec YouTube receives: 8000 Kbps for H.264, or 6000 Kbps for AV1/H.265. The minimums in YouTube’s table are 3000 Kbps for H.264 and 2000 Kbps for AV1/H.265; a minimum is not the recommended target.
- Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. OBS ordinarily takes this as seconds. Do not set an interval longer than 4 seconds.
- Choose a video encoder that supports your intended codec and ingest workflow. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; the recommended bitrate differs by codec. The available guidance does not establish which encoder will perform best on a particular computer.
Menu wording can vary slightly by OBS version and whether Simple or Advanced output mode is selected. OBS’s overview explains its output settings and recommends testing before a first live stream: OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Choose the ingest protocol and connect YouTube
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not publish it in a video, screenshot, or public chat.

Follow the prompts in your account’s Live Control Room, then confirm the preview appears before starting the broadcast. Test the connection before leaving a loop unattended
- Run an upload-speed test. YouTube specifically recommends testing your upload bitrate; a speed-test result is an estimate, not a guarantee of sustained performance.
- Start a private or unlisted test stream with representative footage and audio. Include motion and sound similar to the material you intend to loop.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages while the stream runs. Watch for dropped frames, unstable bitrate, or warnings.
- If health is poor, lower the OBS bitrate and test again. Use a bitrate your connection can sustain reliably rather than keeping the recommended number at the cost of interruptions.
- Before a long-running broadcast, let the test run long enough to expose connection instability. OBS recommends testing before the first live stream, and YouTube advises previewing and reviewing stream-health messages.
OBS says YouTube transcodes ingested streams, including the source feed, so viewers can receive alternate playback formats. That does not compensate for an unstable or incorrectly configured incoming stream. OBS also notes the value of a consistent keyframe interval when viewers change playback quality; see OBS Transcodes / Transcoding.
Does loop content need a different bitrate?
No special loop-stream bitrate is specified in YouTube’s official encoder table. Apply the ordinary 720p30 settings for the codec you send. A low-motion scene may encode differently in practice, but YouTube’s cited guidance does not quantify a loop-specific adjustment, so lowering the target solely because the video repeats is not an established YouTube rule.

Also distinguish encoding settings from the mechanics of repeating media. The official OBS and YouTube pages cited here do not define a specific OBS scene/source setup for looping, unattended recovery, or hosted loop services. Those depend on the playback and hosting workflow you choose.
Troubleshoot common 720p30 stream problems
- YouTube reports a low or unstable bitrate: Your connection may not sustain the selected rate. Reduce OBS’s bitrate, run another representative test, and check Live Control Room stream health.
- The bitrate recommendation does not match your encoder: Confirm the codec being sent. Use the H.264 recommendation for H.264; use the AV1/H.265 recommendation for those codecs. Do not apply the H.264 figure automatically to another codec.
- The stream is not 720p or 30 fps: Recheck OBS Settings → Video, especially Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Value. Confirm the Live Control Room preview reflects the outgoing stream.
- Keyframe-related warning or quality-switching issue: Set the interval to 2 seconds and ensure it does not exceed YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
- The preview never appears: Confirm you selected the correct YouTube ingest workflow and RTMP/RTMPS server, copied the current stream key correctly, and completed the encoder setup in Live Control Room. Reset a leaked or exposed key in YouTube rather than continuing to use it.
- The stream works briefly but fails during a long loop: Treat a short test as insufficient evidence of sustained stability. Test for longer, monitor stream-health messages, and address network instability before leaving it unattended. The cited settings guidance does not prescribe a loop-specific automatic-recovery configuration.
