A YouTube playback error is a symptom, not a single fault. Start by testing another video, another device, and another network; those three checks usually reveal whether the problem is the video, YouTube, your app or browser, or the connection. Then apply the device-specific fix below instead of changing every setting at once.
Try these fixes first
- Select Reload, Refresh, or Tap to retry.
- Play a different video, preferably from another channel.
- Close other YouTube tabs and apps, then reopen YouTube.
- Restart your phone, computer, TV, or streaming device.
- Lower the video’s quality temporarily.
- Switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data (cellular charges may apply).
- Try another browser or supported device.
- Install pending YouTube, browser, operating-system, TV-firmware, or streaming-device updates.
These are the first-line steps in YouTube’s current troubleshooting guidance: common video errors and device and connection troubleshooting.
Diagnose the failure before changing settings

Fix YouTube in a computer browser
Use a current compatible browser
Update Chrome, Firefox, or Safari to the newest version available for your operating system. YouTube lists those browser families as compatible; it does not require one universal browser version. See YouTube system requirements.

Test private browsing
Open YouTube in Chrome Incognito, Firefox Private Browsing, or Safari Private Browsing. If the video works there, an extension, cookie, cached site data, or browser setting is a strong suspect. Disable extensions one at a time, starting with ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, downloaders, proxy tools, and video-enhancement tools. YouTube documents this test in its playback troubleshooting.
Clear only YouTube’s site data first
Delete cached files and cookies for youtube.com and, if necessary, google.com, then restart the browser. Targeted deletion is less disruptive than erasing all browser data. Cookies can sign you out; clearing all data can remove preferences and affect other sites.
Confirm JavaScript is enabled
- Open Chrome and select More → Settings.
- Select Privacy and security → Site settings.
- Select JavaScript and allow sites to use it.
- Reload YouTube.

Try another browser
A second browser separates browser-profile corruption, extension conflicts, hardware-acceleration issues, and security settings from a wider device problem. Update the operating system as well if several media sites are failing.
Fix YouTube on Android
- Update YouTube in Google Play.
- Force-close and reopen the app, then restart the phone or tablet.
- Test Wi‑Fi and mobile data separately.
- Open Settings → Apps (or Applications) → YouTube → Storage or Storage & cache → Clear cache.
- Reopen YouTube and test. If permitted on the device, reinstall it as a final app-level step.
Menu names vary by Android manufacturer and version. Clear cache removes temporary files; Clear storage/data can remove local settings and require sign-in again. YouTube’s Android sequence is documented at Android troubleshooting.
If the app is unsupported
Unofficial or obsolete third-party clients may show “The following content is not available on this app.” Use the official YouTube app, open youtube.com in a browser, or try m.youtube.com on an older device. Update YouTube and Google Play where possible. See YouTube’s unsupported-app guidance.

Fix YouTube on iPhone or iPad
- Update YouTube in the App Store.
- Close and reopen it, then restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Test Wi‑Fi and cellular data separately.
- Check Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) and ensure YouTube is allowed to use cellular data.
- Install pending iOS or iPadOS updates if multiple apps have problems.
- Delete and reinstall YouTube if playback still fails.
iOS generally does not provide a user-facing YouTube “clear cache” control; deleting and reinstalling replaces the app’s local data.
Fix YouTube on a smart TV or streaming device
- Exit and reopen the YouTube app.
- Restart the TV or streaming device.
- Power-cycle it: turn it off, unplug it, wait at least 30 seconds, plug it in, and retry.
- Install YouTube app updates and TV or streaming-device firmware updates.
- Restart the router; test another network or Ethernet where practical.
- Try the same video on another supported device.
Older TVs may no longer support current app versions, and a device may support YouTube without supporting every resolution or codec. A weak TV Wi‑Fi signal can buffer while a nearby phone works. For a black picture or audio/video mismatch, test another HDMI cable and input; that is separate from ordinary buffering. YouTube’s TV guidance is in common playback troubleshooting and device troubleshooting.
Check bandwidth and video quality
In the player, open Settings → Quality and choose Auto or a lower resolution such as 480p or 360p. YouTube’s approximate sustained-speed recommendations are:

These are approximate recommendations, not guarantees. Wi‑Fi interference, latency, packet loss, VPN overhead, congestion, and other active devices can cause buffering even when a speed test reports an adequate download rate. Stop large downloads, move closer to the router, restart it, or use Ethernet on a TV or desktop. Details: YouTube’s requirements and quality factors.
Test extensions, VPNs, proxies, and DNS filters safely
Ad blockers, privacy extensions, VPNs, proxies, custom DNS, Pi-hole, parental controls, and security gateways can interfere with player scripts, consent flows, authentication, regional routing, or licensing. Use a private window first; if that works, disable extensions individually. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy, or test an unfiltered connection if you are authorized to do so. Do not permanently disable antivirus, firewalls, parental controls, or workplace/school protection; restore protection after the test. Changing DNS is unnecessary for most playback errors and may conflict with managed-network policies. “Unavailable” may describe a legitimate access rule rather than a broken player. Check whether the video is private, deleted, age-restricted, region-limited, sign-in required, paid, or a live stream that has ended. Restricted Mode can be enabled by an account, browser, device, network, or administrator and can change which videos are accessible.

On a school, work, hotel, or public network, an administrator, ISP, router filter, or managed Google Workspace policy may block YouTube. Contact the administrator or ISP rather than trying to bypass the policy: YouTube’s network-blocking guidance.
Check account and paid-content problems
- Sign out and sign back in, confirming the correct Google account.
- Test signed-out playback or another account where appropriate.
- For a movie, show, or Premium feature, confirm that the purchase or membership belongs to the active account and that the device is supported.
- Never share a password or verification code.
An expired or mismatched membership, age verification, authentication cookie, purchase entitlement, or licensing rule can affect only signed-in or paid content. Premium is an ad-free subscription and feature upgrade, not a remedy for poor internet, corrupted app data, unsupported hardware, or a YouTube outage. When the symptom is a black screen, audio-only, or freezing
Black or blank player
- Refresh, then test a private window.
- Disable extensions and update the browser.
- Try another browser or device.
- On a TV, test another HDMI cable and input.
- As an advanced, browser-specific test, compare hardware acceleration settings; do not change unrelated system drivers without a clear reason.
Audio without video
- Check the YouTube mute control, browser-tab volume, system volume, and selected output device.
- Disconnect Bluetooth headphones or speakers temporarily.
- Restart the browser or device.
YouTube includes browser, device, and audio-output checks in its current troubleshooting guidance. Changing resolution will not normally repair an HDMI handshake or display-driver fault.
Optional diagnostics for persistent failures
On supported platforms, open YouTube’s Stats for nerds and capture a screenshot while the error occurs. It can show playback and connection information such as the video ID, current and optimal resolution, buffer health, network activity, codec information, and dropped frames, depending on the platform. Include the screenshot and the exact error text when reporting the problem; it is diagnostic information, not a guarantee that support can identify every fault.

If unrelated videos fail on multiple devices and networks, the problem is unlikely to be a single browser cache or app installation. Retry later: temporary page-loading or service problems can resolve without local changes. Do not declare a YouTube outage without current, verified incident evidence. If the issue persists, report it through YouTube with the error message, affected video URL, device and app/browser, operating-system version, network type, and any Stats for nerds screenshot.
