If Spotify still freezes, uninstall it, restart, and install one official version—the Microsoft Store build or Spotify’s Windows installer. Playlists remain tied to your account, but offline downloads may need to be downloaded again.
What the error means
“The Spotify application is not responding” means Windows is not receiving normal responses from the Spotify desktop process. It does not, by itself, show that your account is banned, your subscription expired, your PC is infected, Windows is damaged, or Spotify’s service is offline.
Possible causes include a stuck background process, corrupted cache or local data, an incomplete update, damaged Microsoft Store registration, conflicting Store and direct-download installations, security software, VPN or proxy interference, outdated drivers, local-file or hardware-acceleration problems, low disk space, or profile permissions. The message alone cannot identify which one applies.
First determine whether the problem is local
- Open Spotify Web Player in a browser.
- Try Spotify on a phone or another device.
- Check whether other internet-dependent apps work.
- If there are signs of a broad outage, check Spotify’s official status channels before changing Windows.
- Web Player and another device work: prioritize the Windows installation, app data, or computer.
- Every device fails: investigate account, network, or service availability first.
- Only the desktop app fails: follow the Windows sequence below.
These tests isolate the problem; they do not prove a server outage or conclusively validate an account.

Protect access and offline content before resetting
Make sure you know the email address or sign-in method used for Spotify and can access its password or identity provider. Playlists and library items are account-synced. Downloaded music and podcasts are local app data, so Spotify says they may have to be downloaded again after reinstallation: Spotify playback troubleshooting.
Fix Spotify in the least destructive order
1. End every Spotify process
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes, select Spotify, Spotify.exe, and any Spotify-related background process.
- Choose End task for each one.
- Launch Spotify again.
This clears a process that remained frozen after its window closed. If no Spotify process is listed, restart Windows before continuing.
2. Restart Windows
Choose Start → Power → Restart, not merely Sign out. A restart releases file locks, clears pending services and memory, and can complete Windows or Store updates. Microsoft lists restarting as a standard first step for programs that cannot be installed, removed, or repaired: Microsoft program repair guidance.

3. Update Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart when requested.
Labels can vary slightly by Windows 11 release, language, or managed-device policy.
4. Update Spotify and Microsoft Store
Microsoft Store installation
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Choose Get updates.
Install any Spotify update offered. Microsoft’s Store-app sequence also recommends updating Windows and the Store: Microsoft Store app troubleshooting.
Direct Spotify installation
If Spotify stays open long enough, use its update option. Otherwise download the current installer from Spotify’s official Windows download page. Do not use third-party download sites.

5. Repair Spotify
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Spotify.
- Select its three-dot menu → Advanced options.
- Choose Repair.
Repair attempts to fix the installation while normally preserving app data. Microsoft documents this path and places Repair before Reset: Repair and reset guidance. If Spotify has no Advanced options, it may be a traditional desktop installation or a damaged package; proceed to reinstalling.
6. Reset Spotify
If Repair fails, return to Advanced options, select Reset, confirm, and launch Spotify again. Reset is more destructive: it can remove sign-in state, settings, cache, and offline data. Sign in again and expect to redownload offline music or podcasts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Reinstall from an official source
- Uninstall Spotify through Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install one official build and test it before restoring optional settings or local files.
| Installation source | Official location | When to try it |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store | Spotify in Microsoft Store | Use if the direct installer fails or Store packaging is preferable. |
| Spotify desktop installer | Spotify Windows download | Use if the Store build fails or its package registration appears damaged. |
Switching distributions is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed Spotify fix. Community reports describe different behavior between builds, but those reports are anecdotal: Spotify Community discussion. Avoid leaving both versions unintentionally installed or running them together.

Clean reinstall: only after a normal reinstall fails
A normal uninstall can leave cache or configuration data, depending on the installation type. A clean reinstall removes residual local data and therefore can also remove settings, sign-in state, and offline downloads. Close Spotify in Task Manager first and note any local-files configuration. Offline downloads are protected app content, not ordinary MP3 files that can be restored by copying a cache folder.
Do not delete arbitrary directories under C:Program FilesWindowsApps; Microsoft warns that manually modifying Store package files can create system problems: Microsoft advanced Store-app guidance. Use only cleanup steps appropriate to the specific installation, or ask Microsoft or Spotify Support for a supported removal procedure.
Optional Windows recovery actions
Reset the Microsoft Store cache
If the Store itself will not update or install apps, run wsreset.exe from Start search. Wait for the command window to close and the Store to open, then use Library → Get updates. This resets Microsoft Store caching; it does not directly clear Spotify’s own cache.

Security, VPN, and proxy checks
Temporarily test with a VPN or proxy disabled and review antivirus or endpoint-security quarantine and blocking logs. On a work or school PC, policy may prevent Spotify from starting. Restore protection and network settings after the test.
Advanced AppX recovery
Microsoft’s technical guidance covers scoped app registration, Reset-AppxPackage, and Windows Package Manager. These commands vary by package and can affect more than Spotify, so advanced users should create a restore point or backup and follow Microsoft’s instructions rather than running broad re-registration commands: Microsoft Store-app troubleshooting guidance.
Use these branches for specific symptoms
Freezes immediately at startup
- Repeat End task and Restart.
- Use Repair, then Reset, then reinstall.
- Try the other official distribution.
- Check low disk space, antivirus interference, and whether both builds remain installed.
Freezes after login
- Disable hardware acceleration if the app remains open long enough.
- Turn off automatic startup temporarily.
- Test with local files disabled and VPN or proxy off.
- Update graphics and audio drivers.
Freezes during playback
- Test connection stability and Web Player playback.
- Check the selected Windows output device and Bluetooth connection.
- Review audio enhancements and update the audio driver.
- Note whether only local files fail or every track does.
Works in the browser but not the app
Treat the Windows app, its data, or its registration as the priority: End task, Repair or Reset, reinstall, then switch official source if necessary. Browser success makes an account-wide failure less likely but does not rule out every service-side issue.
Spotify is missing from Installed apps
- Search Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Check the Start menu for a leftover shortcut.
- Open Microsoft Store Library if it was Store-installed.
- Reinstall from Spotify’s official download page if no valid entry exists.
The error returns after every reinstall
Check retained app data, duplicate installations, security software, VPN or DNS filtering, disk space, unusually old or Insider Windows builds, third-party cleanup utilities, local-files folders, and unusually large libraries. Test a new Windows user account. If Spotify alone still fails after a clean official reinstall, contact Spotify Support; if the Store or several Store apps fail, contact Microsoft Support.
