You can share a Spotify song to an Instagram Story or Note, but Spotify does not normally transfer the full audio file into Instagram. For music behind a photo, Reel or video, choose the same track—if available—from Instagram’s own music library. Spotify’s current integration may add a short Story preview and a link to the song, while Instagram controls soundtrack licensing and playback.

- Recommend a song: share its artwork and a link to Spotify.
- Let Story viewers hear a sample: use Spotify’s Story share; eligible shares may include a short preview.
- Show what you are listening to: publish the track in an Instagram Note.
- Put music behind your content: select a song inside Instagram’s licensed audio tools.
The first three are sharing or discovery features. They are not a general-purpose way to import Spotify’s complete stream into an Instagram video.
Share a Spotify song to an Instagram Story
Steps in Spotify
- Open the Spotify mobile app on an iPhone or Android phone.
- Open a song, album, playlist, artist page, podcast or another supported item.
- Tap the Share icon (or the three-dot menu, then Share).
- Choose Instagram Stories.
- Instagram opens a Story draft with Spotify artwork or a generated share card.
- Add text, GIFs, mentions or other Story edits, then tap Your Story, Close Friends or the applicable publish control.
Spotify announced on August 21, 2025 that shared tracks can include a short audio preview that plays in the Story. A viewer can tap the music sticker or song title to open the track in Spotify. The exact sticker, preview and button labels can vary by app version, account, region and rollout status. Spotify’s announcement describes the updated experience.

What viewers receive
The Story shows the track’s artwork or share card. On supported accounts, a short preview may play in Instagram; the full listening experience remains in Spotify. You cannot assume that every viewer will hear a preview or that you can choose any point in the song’s complete runtime.
If the preview is absent, the share can still work as a clickable song card. Spotify’s earlier Story integration was primarily artwork plus a link to play the item in Spotify. Spotify’s original Instagram sharing description documents that earlier behavior.
Share a specific Spotify song to Instagram Notes
From Instagram
- Open Instagram and start a Note from the inbox or Notes area.
- Tap the music-note icon.
- Choose Share from Spotify in the audio browser.
- Select the currently playing song, or play the desired track when prompted.
- Add optional text and tap Share.
From Spotify
- Open the song and display the Now Playing screen.
- Tap Share.
- Choose Notes.
- Finish the Note in Instagram and publish it.
Spotify says the newer Notes integration is available on iOS and Android. Instagram may ask you to link the two accounts the first time. Account linking is not necessarily required for every older-style Story share, but newer Notes and save-to-Spotify actions can use that connection. Spotify explains the Notes and account-linking flow.

Add the same song to an Instagram photo post
- In Instagram, tap Create or the + button and choose Post.
- Take or select a photo, then continue through the editing screens.
- Tap Add music.
- Search for the song by title or artist in Instagram’s music library.
- Use the timeline or slider to choose the section you want.
- Tap Done, then Share.
Instagram supplies the audio in this workflow; Spotify is not the audio source. The track must exist in Instagram’s separately licensed catalog. See Instagram’s instructions for adding audio to a post.

Add music to an Instagram Reel
- Create or upload the Reel.
- Tap the audio or music control.
- Search Instagram’s library, select a permitted track, or use audio you own or are allowed to use.
- Trim or position the audio using Instagram’s available controls.
- Preview and publish the Reel.
Instagram distinguishes licensed audio from original audio. If licensed music is uploaded as “original audio,” Instagram may relabel it with the artist and song, and availability can change when rights change. A Spotify share is not a reliable method for embedding a complete track in a Reel. Instagram’s audio guidance for Reels explains the distinction.
Which method fits your goal?
| Goal | Best method | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Recommend a Spotify track | Spotify → Instagram Stories | Artwork and a Spotify destination; a short preview may be available. |
| Show what you are listening to | Instagram Notes → Share from Spotify | The selected track appears in a Note. |
| Add music to a photo | Instagram → Add music | Instagram attaches a library track and lets you select a section. |
| Add music to a Reel | Instagram audio controls | The Reel uses Instagram’s licensed or permitted original audio system. |
| Commercial soundtrack | Meta Sound Collection or separately licensed audio | Audio intended for commercial-use requirements when the ordinary library is restricted. |
Why a Spotify song may be unavailable or silent
“Instagram Stories” is missing from Spotify
- Update Spotify and Instagram.
- Confirm both apps are installed on the same phone.
- Close and reopen both apps.
- Try Share from both the Now Playing screen and the track’s three-dot menu.
- Check that the phone’s operating system supports current app releases.
- As a fallback, create the Story in Instagram and share the Spotify link or artwork manually.
Spotify specifically recommends keeping both apps current for the integration. See Spotify’s current integration notes.

The Story has artwork but no sound
The audio-preview rollout may not cover your account, region or track; the apps may be outdated; Instagram may be showing the older share-card format; or playback conditions may prevent the preview. Treat the Story as a link card unless you can hear the preview in your own published Story.
The Music sticker or Add music control is missing
Meta says access to Instagram’s licensed library can depend on account type, content type, geography and rights-holder agreements. Some business accounts and post types have restrictions, and songs can be removed after rights changes. Check Meta’s licensed-music availability guidance.

Business accounts, copyright and commercial use
Meta describes Instagram’s ordinary licensed music library as intended for personal, non-commercial use. Promotional posts, advertisements and some business accounts may therefore have less access than personal accounts. For commercial Stories or Reels, Meta points to Sound Collection, which contains royalty-free music and sounds intended for uses including ads, or you can use audio that you own or have separately licensed.
Do not download, screen-record or extract a Spotify stream to force it into a video. Those methods can conflict with platform terms and copyright rules. Use Instagram’s licensed library, Sound Collection, separately licensed audio or a Spotify Story/Note share instead.
What happens when someone taps the song?
A Story viewer may tap the title or music sticker and choose Open on Spotify, or may first reach an Instagram song or audio page. Where the current integration is available and accounts are linked, an Instagram user may also add the discovered track to Spotify’s Liked Songs. The song is still played in Spotify rather than transferred into Instagram.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add a full Spotify song to an Instagram Story?
No supported Spotify-to-Instagram workflow imports the complete stream. A Story share provides artwork and a destination link, with a short preview on some current accounts.
Can I add Spotify music directly to an Instagram Reel?
Use Instagram’s audio controls and select the track from its library, permitted original audio or separately licensed music. Spotify sharing itself is not a Reel soundtrack import.
Do I need Spotify Premium?
The cited Spotify and Instagram documentation does not establish Premium as a requirement for these sharing features.
Can viewers open the song in Spotify?
Usually they can tap the Story title, sticker or song page and choose an option such as Open on Spotify; labels depend on the current rollout.
Can I save a song from Instagram back to Spotify?
The newer integration can let linked users save a discovered song to Spotify’s Liked Songs when that option appears on Instagram’s song or audio page.
What can I use if Instagram’s Music sticker is unavailable?
For commercial content, check Meta Sound Collection. Otherwise use audio you own or have licensed, or share the Spotify track as a Story or Note rather than embedding it.
