If Spotify says “No internet connection” while your device appears to be online, first turn off Spotify’s Offline mode, then check whether other apps can connect and try Spotify on another network. Those quick tests show whether the problem is a setting, your network, the Spotify app, or a service issue—and help you avoid deleting downloads unnecessarily.

First, find out whether the problem is Spotify or your connection

  1. Check Spotify’s service status. Visit Spotify Status. You can also check Spotify’s Community announcements. A status page may not reflect every regional or account-specific issue, so continue with the checks below if no incident is listed.
  2. Try other internet services. Open a website and another app that needs an internet connection. If they also fail, troubleshoot the Wi-Fi or mobile connection before changing Spotify settings.
  3. Compare networks and devices. Try Spotify on Wi-Fi and cellular data, and, if available, on another device. If Spotify works on cellular data but not Wi-Fi, the router, network filter, or managed network is a likely factor. If it works in a browser but not the installed app, focus on the app or its device permissions.

Spotify’s offline troubleshooting guide also recommends testing another connection and checking whether other apps can get online. Don’t reinstall Spotify just because it reports a connection error: an outage or network restriction will not be fixed by reinstalling.

Try the quick fixes that preserve your downloads

Turn off Spotify Offline mode

Spotify Offline mode prevents the app from streaming, even when the device has internet access. In the mobile app, open Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline, then turn off Offline mode. On Windows, look under the File menu or the three-dot menu. On Mac, check the Spotify menu in the macOS menu bar. Desktop menu names can vary by app version. Spotify notes that content not downloaded for offline listening may appear greyed out in Offline mode. These paths are from Spotify’s current support instructions; labels can differ by device or version.

Close Spotify, restart the device, and try again

  1. Fully quit Spotify, then reopen it.
  2. If the error remains, restart your phone, tablet, or computer and try again.

A restart can clear a temporarily stuck app or network state, but it won’t resolve a confirmed Spotify outage or a network that blocks the service.

Switch connections and complete any network sign-in

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi and try Spotify over cellular data, or switch back to Wi-Fi if cellular fails.
  2. If Spotify works on cellular data, reconnect to Wi-Fi and restart the router.
  3. If possible, try another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot.
  4. On a hotel, guest, school, or workplace network, open a browser and complete any sign-in or captive-portal step. Managed networks may restrict streaming; contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass its rules.

Check data access and update the app

If Spotify fails only on cellular data, make sure the app is allowed to use it. On iPhone or iPad, check Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service and enable Spotify. On Android, look under Settings → Apps → Spotify → Mobile data and Wi-Fi or Data usage; wording varies by manufacturer and Android version. Also check device-wide Data Saver or Low Data Mode, signal strength, and whether you have mobile data remaining. Spotify recommends checking mobile-data access and allowance in its connectivity guidance.

Install any available Spotify update from the App Store or Google Play on mobile, or from the Microsoft Store if that is where you installed Spotify on Windows. Update the desktop app when it offers an update, and keep your operating system reasonably current. Exact update availability changes over time.

Use the Web Player to narrow down an app problem

Try Spotify in a browser. If the Web Player works on the same device and network while the installed app does not, the issue is more likely to involve the app installation, cache, app-specific permissions, firewall rule, or proxy setting. If the Web Player also fails on that network, compare with another network and check Spotify Status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If the Web Player fails in one browser but works in another, update the failing browser and temporarily test without extensions. You can also try a private window to see whether browser data or extensions are involved.
  • If both the Web Player and installed app fail only on one network, investigate network restrictions, VPN or proxy settings, DNS filtering, and firewall rules.

Check VPN, proxy, firewall, and filtering settings

A VPN, custom proxy, ad blocker, DNS filter, antivirus web shield, parental-control service, or firewall can interfere with Spotify. As a temporary diagnostic test, disconnect a VPN or disable a filter briefly, then retry Spotify. Restore your protection afterward; don’t leave security software disabled as a permanent fix. Spotify Community’s connection troubleshooting guidance identifies firewall and proxy settings as possible causes.

  • Proxy: If you configured a proxy for Spotify or the device, check that it is still correct. If you don’t need it, restore the default or No proxy option if available. There is no universal proxy setting that suits every network.
  • Managed network: A workplace, school, library, or hotel may intentionally limit access to streaming services. Ask its administrator about permitted access.
  • VPN: A VPN may help identify a routing difference, but it can also cause connection trouble. Treat it as a reversible diagnostic variable, not a guaranteed fix.

Platform-specific checks

Android

  • Verify that Offline mode is off in Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline.
  • Check Spotify’s mobile-data permission and any device-wide Data Saver or battery restriction. Android settings names vary.
  • In Spotify, look under Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Storage for the cache option. Start with Spotify’s in-app cache clearing rather than the device’s Clear storage or Clear data control.

iPhone and iPad

  • Verify that Offline mode is off in Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline.
  • Check Settings → Cellular or Mobile Service and allow Spotify to use cellular data. Also check Low Data Mode if it is enabled.
  • Update Spotify through the App Store. If you later delete and reinstall the app, expect to sign in again and download offline content again.

Windows

  • Compare the installed app with the Web Player, and check Windows proxy settings and Windows Defender Firewall permissions.
  • If other networks work but your usual Wi-Fi does not, follow Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting before reinstalling Spotify.
  • If Windows networking itself is malfunctioning, an advanced network reset may help. These commands are general Windows troubleshooting—not Spotify-specific—and may affect other network behavior. Open Command Prompt as an administrator if required, run the commands, then restart Windows:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
netsh winsock reset

Microsoft documents related Wi-Fi and network checks in its Windows connection and troubleshooting guidance. Use network-reset commands only when the problem appears to extend beyond Spotify.

Mac

  • Check Offline mode from the Spotify menu in the macOS menu bar, then test the Web Player.
  • If only the desktop app fails, quit it fully, check macOS firewall and proxy settings, and test another network.
  • Update Spotify and macOS where practical. If you need to reinstall, use Spotify’s device-specific clean reinstall instructions; cleanup details can vary by macOS version and installation method.

Clear the cache before considering a reinstall

Use Spotify’s in-app cache-clearing option first. Cache consists of temporary files; clearing it is less disruptive than clearing all app data, but behavior can vary by device and installation state. Don’t use the device’s Clear storage or Clear data control unless you are prepared to sign in again and potentially redownload offline content.

Reinstall Spotify only after the earlier checks

Before a clean reinstall, make sure you know how to sign in and can access the right account. Removing Spotify can sign you out and erase local downloads; playlists and other account data should remain associated with the account you sign back into. The Spotify Community’s clean reinstall guide provides platform-specific steps for Android, iPhone and iPad, Windows, and Mac.

  1. Follow Spotify’s clean reinstall steps for your device if a regular reinstall has not helped.
  2. Install Spotify from the official App Store, Google Play, Microsoft Store, or Spotify’s official download source.
  3. Sign in and test streaming before changing other settings or restoring offline content.
  4. Redownload music or podcasts for offline listening after the connection works.

If Spotify still cannot connect

Before contacting support, note your device and operating-system version, where Spotify fails (app, Web Player, or both), the network type, the exact error text, and whether another network works. Check Spotify Status again, then contact Spotify Support or consult the Spotify Community. If the problem is confined to a work, school, hotel, or public network, ask its administrator about access rather than bypassing restrictions.

Plan for offline listening separately

Offline listening can help when you expect to be without a connection, but it does not repair sign-in or connectivity problems. Spotify Premium includes music downloads for offline listening; availability and plan features can vary by country. Spotify’s US offline downloads page says a device must reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active and synchronize the library. Podcasts may have different download availability, and new music, recommendations, and library changes still need a connection. Because reinstalling removes local downloads, download important content again only after the app is working and before you travel.
