If Twitch viewers cannot hear your microphone, game, desktop audio, or alerts, first find where the sound disappears: at the device, in your operating system, in OBS, on the live stream, or only in the saved VOD. Check the audio meters, make a local recording, then compare it with playback from another device and with the VOD. That sequence separates a routing problem from a Twitch VOD or copyright issue before you start changing settings at random.
Identify the symptom

Think of the path as source → operating system → OBS mixer → stream output → Twitch live player → VOD. Test in that order. An OBS meter moving means OBS is receiving a signal; it does not confirm that the signal is included in the stream or saved VOD.
Run a quick audio test before changing settings
- Stop the stream. Check the microphone’s hardware mute, cables, headset connection, interface gain, and selected input and playback devices. For diagnosis, unplug unused microphones, webcams, Bluetooth headsets, virtual devices, and capture-card audio where practical. Use headphones rather than nearby speakers.
- Test the microphone in Windows or macOS Sound settings. Confirm that the intended input is detected and responds when you speak.
- In OBS, speak and play a game sound. Look for movement in the microphone and game or desktop meters in the Audio Mixer. Check that the relevant sources are not muted.
- Make a short local recording while speaking and playing a sound. Play it back with headphones. If it is silent, fix the device, permissions, or OBS source before troubleshooting Twitch.
- If the recording works, start a short test stream and listen from a phone or another browser that is not simply playing OBS’s local monitor. Compare the live audio with the local recording.
- Check the saved VOD separately. Streaming and recording can use different audio tracks, and Twitch may mute selected portions of a VOD.
These comparisons locate the failure: an absent operating-system input points to the device or permission; an absent OBS meter points to the source or routing; a working recording but silent live test points to stream output; and a difference between the live stream and VOD points to track assignment or VOD processing.
Fix a microphone that is missing or silent
Check the device first
Turn off the microphone’s hardware mute, reconnect its cable or USB plug, and check any interface’s input selection and gain. Phantom power is needed only for microphones that require it. Test the mic outside OBS. If the operating system does not detect it, reconnect it, try another cable or USB port, and temporarily close apps that may be holding the device. On Windows, Microsoft recommends checking microphone permissions and, if needed, the device driver. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide has additional steps.

Check the OBS source
- Open Settings → Audio. Select the intended microphone as a global device, or disable the global mic if you are adding it as a source in a scene. Avoid capturing the same mic both ways.
- Return to the Audio Mixer. Confirm that the mic source is not muted and that its meter moves when you speak.
- If there is no meter movement, add a scene source with Sources → + → Audio Input Capture, then select the exact microphone. Check its properties for a disconnected or incorrect device.
- Confirm the source is present in the active scene. Then make another short local recording.
OBS supports audio input and output capture sources on Windows and macOS. Its audio-source guide warns that adding a device as a scene source while selecting it globally can create echo. Use one capture route for each device.
Check microphone permissions
Windows 11: Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone. Turn on microphone access, permission for apps to access the microphone, and access for desktop apps. Then open Settings → System → Sound and verify the input device and input volume. Use the Windows search term “Microphone privacy settings” if you have a different Windows build; labels vary between versions. Also check the volume mixer for a muted app or a game routed to the wrong output.
macOS: In OBS, open OBS Studio → Review App Permissions if that option is available. Allow Microphone for microphone and audio-device capture. Allow Screen Recording for desktop, window, or application capture. Grant Camera permission if needed for a camera, and Accessibility only when an OBS feature such as global hotkeys requires it. Restart OBS after changing permissions, then verify the microphone and output device in macOS Sound settings. See OBS’s macOS permissions guide.

Fix missing game, desktop, or application audio
Microphone capture brings sound into the computer. Desktop or application capture picks up sound the computer or a selected program is playing. Capture-card audio is a separate source arriving from an external device. Choose the route that matches what you want viewers to hear.
Windows: desktop audio or application capture
- In OBS, open Settings → Audio and check that Desktop Audio matches the playback device the game actually uses.
- Alternatively, add an application-specific capture source for the game. OBS’s Application Audio Capture guide documents this feature for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. Availability and interface details can depend on OBS version.
- If the game does not appear as a source, start it after configuring capture. Check that it is producing sound and that Windows’s volume mixer has not muted it or routed it to another headset, speaker, or display.
- Play a sound and check the corresponding OBS meter.
Desktop Audio is convenient when you want to capture several computer sounds, but it can also pick up notifications, browser audio, or private calls. Application capture gives you more control. Do not capture the same game through both routes: OBS recommends disabling global Desktop Audio when application-specific capture would otherwise capture the same sound again. macOS: permissions and capture versions
Desktop and application audio capture on macOS depends on macOS and OBS versions. Enable Screen Recording and the relevant audio permissions, restart OBS, and check that the application is producing sound. OBS documents newer macOS Audio Capture Source and Screen Capture Source workflows, including changes relevant to macOS 13 Ventura and later and OBS 30 or later. The menus are not identical across every release, so use OBS’s macOS desktop-audio capture guide for the version you have.

Stop echo, feedback, and doubled audio
Use the one source, one path rule: capture the mic once, the game once, and desktop audio once. Echo often appears when a device is selected in Settings → Audio and also added as an Audio Input or Output Capture source. It can also happen when the same game is captured by both Desktop Audio and Application Audio Capture. Remove or disable the duplicate route, then test again. OBS explains this risk in its audio-source guide.
Monitoring can create a second path, too. Avoid playing monitored sound through speakers while an open microphone is active. Use headphones when listening to a monitor feed, and check that a browser call or voice-chat app is not sending the same microphone back through both a browser source and desktop capture. Twitch’s Stream Together audio guidance describes how incorrect output or browser-source routing can double microphone audio.
When you can hear it but viewers cannot: check monitoring
Local monitoring and stream output are different. In OBS, open Edit → Advanced Audio Properties and inspect the source’s audio monitoring setting:

- Monitor Only: you hear the source locally, but this mode does not by itself send it to the stream.
- Monitor and Output: you hear it and send it to the stream.
- Output Only: you send it to the stream without hearing it played back locally.
Do not treat a working monitor as proof that viewers can hear the source. Verify the local recording and then listen to the live stream from another device. Monitoring through speakers can cause feedback; monitoring can also introduce distracting delay depending on the device and route. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide recommends checking audio through the chain rather than relying on one meter or monitor.
Balance quiet, distorted, crackling, or delayed audio
For quiet or uneven volume
- Set the microphone’s physical gain so ordinary speech is clear without clipping.
- Adjust the microphone level in OBS, then set game, desktop, and chat levels. If the game overwhelms speech, lower the game before pushing the mic excessively.
- Ask someone to judge the stream mix or listen to a test from another device. Your headphone mix is not necessarily the viewer’s mix.
- Watch for a meter that constantly reaches its highest range. Lower the signal before it clips; later processing cannot restore audio that was already distorted.
OBS cautions that meter readings are not a substitute for listening to how loud a source sounds. Its mixer guide covers checking levels and monitoring through the audio chain.

- Noise suppression may reduce steady background noise, but aggressive settings can damage speech.
- Noise gate can reduce room noise while you are silent; a poorly chosen threshold can cut off the beginnings of words.
- Compressor reduces differences between loud and quiet speech, but excessive compression can sound unnatural or raise background noise.
- Limiter can help prevent peaks from clipping, but it cannot repair audio already distorted at the source.
- Gain raises a quiet signal and its noise together.
There is no universal filter setting: microphone distance, room noise, device gain, and voice level all matter. First fix a muted, disconnected, or incorrectly routed source.

For crackling, robotic sound, or delay
- Lower gain and confirm the source is not clipping. Test without virtual mixers, voice changers, or extra processing.
- Reconnect the device, try another USB port, and temporarily remove hubs. Close unnecessary audio-processing apps.
- Keep the sample rate consistent across the operating system, audio interface, and streaming software. Neither 44.1 kHz nor 48 kHz is a universal cure; consistency is the useful check.
- Check system load and OBS status. Compare a local recording with the live stream to see whether the fault appears before or after OBS’s recording path.
- If Bluetooth audio is delayed or changes quality when its microphone activates, test with wired headphones. For a capture card, compare its audio with the console or display output.
Fix audio missing only from a Twitch VOD
A VOD can have a different mix from the live stream. OBS’s Twitch VOD Track feature lets the live stream and saved VOD receive different audio. The default documented setup uses track 1 for live audio and track 2 for VOD audio; tracks 3–6 can support other recording workflows. Check OBS’s Twitch VOD Track guide for current interface details.
To inspect the setup:
- Connect your Twitch account in Settings → Stream.
- In Settings → Output, enable custom encoder settings. Enable the Twitch VOD Track option if it appears.
- Open Edit → Advanced Audio Properties from the Audio Mixer. Check the track assignments for every source: mic, game, alerts, browser sources, and any other sound you intend to keep.
- Include the mic and game on the VOD track if they should be saved there. Exclude only audio you intentionally do not want in the VOD.
- Make a new short test and check both the live output and VOD. A setting change cannot restore audio that was not included in an earlier recording.

When Twitch automatically mutes VOD audio
If only parts of a saved VOD or clip are silent, check for a copyright-muted indicator. Twitch says its content-recognition system can automatically mute portions when it detects potentially copyrighted audio. That automatic mute is not itself a DMCA notification or copyright strike; a rights holder can still pursue a separate notification. See Twitch’s DMCA and copyright FAQs.
If you own the audio, have permission or a license, believe the audio was not played, or think detection was otherwise mistaken, Twitch provides an appeal process for flagged content. An appeal does not make unlicensed music safe to use, and disabling or ignoring copyright detection does not fix ordinary routing problems. Check the license terms for any music you use; “royalty-free” alone does not establish what uses are permitted.

- Confirm the browser or alert source is not muted in the OBS mixer and uses the intended audio output mode.
- Test an alert on its own, then balance its volume against speech and game sound.
- Check where Discord or in-game chat is routed. With application-specific capture, voice chat may need its own source rather than Desktop Audio.
- Watch for a caller’s voice arriving through both a browser source and desktop capture.
- For Twitch Stream Together, verify the microphone input, call output, desktop-audio capture, and browser-source routing. Twitch warns that some combinations can duplicate microphone audio; see its Stream Together guidance.
Console and capture-card audio
PC audio instructions do not resolve every console issue. If you use OBS with a capture card, check that the card appears as an audio source, HDMI audio is enabled on the console, and the card’s meter moves. Plugging a headset into a controller may change whether audio goes to HDMI. Check party-chat privacy and output settings, then make a local recording. Avoid capturing the same console sound through HDMI and a separate line-in unless you intend to mix both.
If you stream directly from a PlayStation or Xbox without OBS, OBS mixer steps do not apply. Check the console’s current broadcast controls for microphone inclusion, party-chat inclusion, game-chat output, headset-versus-HDMI routing, and privacy permissions. Exact controls depend on console, firmware, account settings, and streaming method; use the current support guidance for your console rather than assuming one menu path fits all.
If you still have no sound
- Reduce the setup to one microphone and one game or desktop source. Disable duplicate sources and virtual audio tools temporarily.
- Reconnect devices, restart OBS, and test the mic and playback devices in the operating system again.
- Make a fresh local recording and note which meters move and which sounds are absent.
- If the local recording works, test a short live stream from another device, then check its VOD. Record whether the failure affects all sounds, one source, or only a VOD segment.
- If the operating system cannot detect a device, follow its device or driver troubleshooting steps. If the device works there but not in OBS, provide OBS support with the specific source, operating-system version, and recording-versus-stream symptom.
Before going live
- The microphone meter moves when you speak, and the game or desktop meter moves when sound plays.
- A local recording contains the intended sounds.
- There is no echo or doubled capture.
- A listener on another device confirms the live mix is audible and balanced.
- VOD track assignments include the sources you want saved.
- Any music used is covered by a license suitable for your intended use.
Most fixes do not require new hardware. Consider replacing or adding equipment only after testing points to a faulty device, unstable connection, or a genuine routing limitation.
