OBS disconnects during a 24/7 YouTube stream usually point to an unstable or insufficient connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server—not automatically to a fault in OBS. Start by checking OBS’s dropped-frame and connection indicators, compare them with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, and test one change at a time. The most useful first fixes are usually reducing bitrate to match stable upload capacity and testing on wired Ethernet.
First identify what is failing
During the next interruption, note the time and check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator. OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. OBS connects directly to the selected platform rather than routing the broadcast through an OBS-operated intermediary server. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide and its Help Portal distinguish sender-side dropped frames from viewer buffering: buffering can have other causes, so don’t treat every playback complaint as proof that OBS disconnected.
Check upload capacity and set a sustainable bitrate
Measure the connection the stream actually uses
Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to the broadcast: use the same computer and network, and account for other people or devices sharing the connection. Download speed and an advertised plan speed do not establish how much stable upload capacity is available to OBS. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom; if you send both a primary and backup feed, its guidance says to account for both feeds plus that headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips also advise allowing for competing network use. OBS’s 2024 troubleshooting guidance offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, not a setting guaranteed to work on every shared or variable connection. Use it as a test point, then watch the results.
Lower bitrate if the connection cannot hold it
If the upload fluctuates or OBS continues to drop frames, reduce the video bitrate in OBS and run a representative test again. Lower bitrate can improve continuity on a constrained connection, but it reduces picture quality. YouTube’s current encoder table gives these examples for H.264:

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not evidence that a particular Indian connection can sustain them. Choose the row matching your actual encoder and output, then test whether it remains stable with upload headroom. YouTube lists different recommendations for AV1 and H.265; consult the current encoder, bitrate and resolution table for the codec and frame rate you use. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube calls for CBR and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds. These encoder settings do not compensate for an unstable connection.
Isolate the route and network configuration
Change one item at a time and note whether the disconnects stop. That makes it easier to separate a destination or route issue from a local configuration problem.

- Try another available YouTube ingest server. If the alternate works, the result suggests a destination- or route-specific problem, but does not identify which network hop is responsible.
- Use another streaming service only as a diagnostic comparison. If that test works, it points toward a destination- or route-specific difference; it does not establish the exact cause. Return to YouTube for the intended broadcast.
- On Windows, test OBS Network Optimizations and TCP pacing separately. Restore the previous state if a change makes no difference or worsens the connection.
- Check Bind to IP. OBS recommends leaving it at Default unless you have a specific network setup that requires otherwise.
- Test IPv4 Only temporarily, if needed. If it does not help, restore IPv4/IPv6 rather than leaving a diagnostic change in place.
- Consider Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment as a mitigation. OBS can lower bitrate during congestion, which may protect continuity at the cost of quality; it does not fix the underlying cause.

Test Wi-Fi, software and equipment
- Try wired Ethernet. OBS identifies Wi-Fi instability as a possible cause and recommends a wired connection for streaming. Use an Ethernet cable to test wired operation; replace a cable only if it appears faulty. A cable will not fix insufficient upload capacity, ISP congestion, OBS settings or a route problem.
- Test VPN or security software carefully. Temporarily determine whether either is interfering. If stopping security software changes the result, restore protection and add an OBS exception where appropriate; do not leave security disabled.
- Check network-prioritization or “boost” utilities. Test suspected software rather than assuming it is helping the stream.
- Update the network adapter driver from your computer or motherboard maker, and inspect the network card, cables, switches, extenders, modem and router.
- Restart the modem and router. If you cannot tell whether equipment is faulty, OBS recommends speaking with your ISP before replacing it.

Monitor YouTube stream health during a test and broadcast
Before committing to a long event, test with representative motion and audio. During the stream, compare OBS’s counters with the stream-health indicator and error messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing ahead and monitoring stream health; its live-stream metrics instructions explain where to review performance on a computer. If OBS stays connected while viewers report buffering, investigate viewer playback separately rather than assuming the sender-to-ingest connection has failed.
Protect the archive of a continuous stream
Live continuity and archive capture are separate risks. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 broadcast, make a local recording and periodically verify that the file is growing and usable; YouTube recommends a local archive backup. The guidance does not establish a restart interval or guarantee archive behavior for every stream. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

When to contact your ISP
If local tests do not resolve recurring interruptions, give your ISP the failure timestamps, OBS logs, upload test results, YouTube stream-health messages and the changes you tested. Ask the provider to investigate the connection and route to YouTube’s ingest service. OBS notes that ISP-side changes or unexpected route congestion may be outside the streamer’s control. The cited guidance does not establish a best ISP, plan, city or access technology in India; performance needs to be assessed for your own connection.
