If your YouTube music stream sounds doubled, first check whether OBS is capturing the same audio device twice: once under Settings > Audio and again with an Audio Input/Output Capture source in a scene. Keep one intended capture path. Then record a short test and check the YouTube playback with local monitoring muted; the sound in your headphones is not necessarily the sound viewers hear.
Find out where the echo is happening
Separate the OBS mix from what you hear locally. OBS audio monitoring sends a source to the monitoring device configured in OBS; it is a listening path, not a definitive check of the encoded stream. Make a short recording using the same source arrangement as your live scene, then listen to the recording and the YouTube playback separately.

Use headphones if helpful for listening to a monitor or playback check; they are a way to inspect the sound, not a fix for duplicated capture.
Remove duplicate capture in OBS
- Play the music and look at the OBS audio mixer. Identify which sources show activity. In particular, check whether the same output appears as both a global Desktop Audio device and a scene-level Audio Output Capture source.
- Open Settings > Audio and inspect the scene’s audio sources. For the relevant device, keep one capture path: either the global device selection or the scene-level capture. OBS specifically warns that an Audio Input/Output Capture source can cause echo if the same device is also selected in Settings > Audio. Its guidance is to disable global devices when adding those devices directly to scenes. See the OBS Audio Sources guide.
- In Advanced Audio Properties, turn monitoring off for the source while testing if you do not need it for operation. If you do need monitoring, select the intended monitoring device and check that its output is not being captured back into the stream through another source. Exact routing depends on your devices and operating system.
- Record a short test with the same sources and settings you plan to use for the live scene. Listen to the file, then compare it with the local monitor. If only the monitor sounds doubled, investigate local routing; if the recording is doubled too, return to the source list and global device selections.
- Check the YouTube playback, ideally with headphones and local monitoring muted. Verify the result before relying on the stream unattended.
OBS’s source names and available capture options vary by operating system. Its documentation describes Audio Input/Output Capture for Windows and macOS; Linux uses ALSA/PulseAudio sources. The steps above identify the duplicate-path issue, but a platform-specific routing diagnosis requires knowing your OS, OBS version, active sources, global audio settings, and where the echo occurs.

Keep YouTube playback settings separate from the OBS fix
YouTube’s latency setting describes the delay between the encoder’s capture and what viewers see; lower latency can mean more playback buffering. DVR allows viewers to pause, rewind, and continue. These settings affect the playback experience, but YouTube’s documentation does not identify them as remedies for duplicate OBS capture. See YouTube’s live settings guide.
For a continuous broadcast, account for YouTube’s stated archive limit: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. That statement does not establish that every 24/7 stream can be saved as one replay. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a Live server URL and stream key in the encoder; its guide says to stop sending content to end the stream. See the YouTube encoder guide. This archive behavior is separate from diagnosing audio echo.
