Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMax subtitles can fail because a particular title lacks the track you need, the Max player has selected the wrong option, your device is applying its own caption settings, or the app/browser state is damaged. Work through the checks below in order; start with another title and device before resetting anything.
Quick fixes, in the right order
- Play another episode or movie and check whether captions work.
- Pause playback, open the speech-bubble Audio and Subtitles menu, and select the required language or English – CC.
- Check your TV, streaming player, console, or phone’s accessibility caption setting.
- Update Max and the device operating system.
- Sign out, fully restart the device (not just standby), and sign in again.
- Clear Max’s cache; clear app data only if necessary, because it signs you out.
- Reinstall Max if the fault is limited to one device.
- For a browser, test a private window, extensions, cookies, and another supported browser.
- Contact Max when the same failure follows multiple titles and devices or a needed track is missing.
Confirm the title has the caption track you need
Start the movie or episode and open Audio and Subtitles. Under Subtitles, ordinary subtitles may appear as a language name, while accessibility captions may be labeled English – CC. CC can include sound effects and speaker identification; audio description is a separate spoken narration track.
Max says availability varies by title: a series can have captions on one episode but not another, and some languages or CC tracks may not be offered. A missing option is therefore not automatically an app failure. See Max’s subtitle and audio guide.
Turn subtitles on in the Max player
- Begin playback.
- Tap the video on a phone or tablet, or pause/move the pointer on a TV or computer.
- Select the speech-bubble Audio and Subtitles icon.
- Choose a language under Subtitles, or choose the track marked CC.
- Close the menu and resume playback.
Labels and button placement vary by device, model, operating-system version, and Max app version. Use the control shown in your player rather than assuming another platform’s layout.

Check device caption controls
Roku
During playback, press Star (*) and choose the caption option. Global controls are under Settings > Accessibility > Captions mode; appearance is under Settings > Accessibility > Caption style. Some apps use their own caption system, so Max’s in-player setting may take precedence. Roku recommends testing another title, app, and device when a feature fails; see Roku’s troubleshooting guidance and caption instructions.
Amazon Fire TV
Select the track in Max first. For appearance, use Settings > Accessibility > Closed Caption > Text. Update Max by highlighting it, pressing Menu, and choosing More Info > Update. Update Fire TV at Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for System Update. To reset the app, open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Max, then use Force Stop, Clear Cache, and, only if needed, Clear Data. Menu names can differ slightly by Fire OS version.
Apple TV
Choose the track in Max while playback is paused. Caption appearance is under Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning > Style. Update Max in the App Store and tvOS at Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software. Apple documents these options at Apple Support.

Android TV and Google TV
Pause playback and open Max’s Audio and Subtitles menu. Device styling is commonly under Settings > Device Preferences > Accessibility > Caption, although wording varies. Update Max and the system, then clear Max’s cache/data under Settings > Apps > Max if required.
Samsung TV
Install available Max and TV updates. On supported models, try Home > Settings > Support > Device Care > Manage Storage > Max > View Details > Clear cache. If offered, clear data. To reinstall, use Home > Apps > Settings, select Max, delete it, and install it again. Samsung menus differ by model and year, and clearing data is not available on every TV.
PlayStation and Xbox
Update Max from the console’s app-management area and install the latest console system software. Sign out, restart the console completely, and reinstall Max if the problem affects only that console. Test the title elsewhere before changing console-wide accessibility settings.

Recommended Free Tools
Perform a real restart
Sign out of Max, power down or restart the device, wait for it to finish shutting down, and sign in again. Max’s procedures use roughly 10 seconds for some phones/tablets and 20 seconds for some TV or streaming-device steps; follow the instructions for your platform. Sleep mode may leave the app state intact.

- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku Streaming Stick with the Roku remote

Clear cache before data
Clearing cache removes temporary files and is relatively low risk. Clear Data removes local app state and requires you to sign in again. Use it only when an update and restart did not help.
Reinstall only the affected app
Reinstalling is useful when Max works on other devices. On Roku, channel removal may be unavailable while an active subscription purchased through Roku remains attached; use the available Max/Roku instructions rather than deleting blindly.
Fix Max subtitles in a desktop browser
- Use a current Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari release.
- Open Max in an incognito or private window.
- If captions work there, disable extensions one at a time, especially ad blockers, privacy tools, video enhancers, and script blockers.
- Allow third-party cookies if the player cannot retain your subtitle choice.
- Clear Max-related cookies and cached files, sign in again, and test another supported browser.
Private browsing is a diagnostic, not necessarily the permanent solution; the interfering extension or cookie policy must be corrected. Max describes this process in its browser troubleshooting guide.

Targeted fixes for common symptoms
| Symptom | Most likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No subtitle button | The title has no exposed subtitle/CC track, or the player failed to load | Try another title and device; update and restart Max |
| Works in one episode only | Episode-specific caption track problem | Report the exact episode if the failure follows it |
| Captions turn back on | Saved profile or device caption preference | Turn them off in Max and check device accessibility settings |
| Wrong language | A different track is selected or the preferred language is unavailable | Reopen Audio and Subtitles and choose the exact listed track |
| English is present but English – CC is absent | That title supplies subtitles but not an accessibility-caption track | Try another title; do not assume the plan is the cause |
| Text is too small, large, faint, or boxed | Device or app caption styling | Adjust the platform’s caption style, then retest in Max |
| Captions are delayed or early | Playback or title-specific timing defect | Restart playback and test another device; report it if the same title remains out of sync |
| Fails only on live programming | Live captions can have different availability and timing | Test on-demand content and report the live program separately |
Identify whether Max or your device is at fault
| Test | Result | Likely source |
|---|---|---|
| Another episode of the same series | Only one episode fails | Caption track for that episode |
| Another Max title | Every title fails | App, device, profile, or account setting |
| Max on a phone or computer | Works elsewhere | TV, console, or streaming-device app |
| Another streaming app | Captions fail everywhere | Device accessibility, firmware, or display configuration |
| Different Max profile | Works on another profile | Saved profile preference |
| Same title in a browser | Works in browser | Device app state |
Network speed is usually not the first explanation when video and audio play normally. Max lists 5 Mbps as a minimum for HD playback and recommends 50+ Mbps for 4K; these are playback guidance, not subtitle requirements. If captions fail alongside buffering, Max’s network procedure is to unplug the modem/router, wait 30 seconds, reconnect the modem, wait for service, then reconnect the router. See Max’s buffering guide.
When to contact Max support
Escalate when the problem affects multiple titles and devices, a caption track that should exist is missing, or one title is consistently out of sync. Include:
- Max profile name
- Exact title, season, and episode
- Selected caption language or CC track
- Device make and model
- Max app or browser version and operating-system version
- Whether another title, profile, or device works
- Any error message or code
- Approximate time and U.S. region
This information lets support distinguish a content-track defect from an app or device failure. Changing plans is not a caption fix: Max’s listed U.S. plans—Basic with Ads, Standard, and Premium—do not determine whether an otherwise available subtitle track functions. Current plan details are at Max’s plans page.
