How to Fix Max (HBO Max) Not Working on Roku

If Max won’t open, sign in, or play on Roku, isolate the cause before resetting anything. Follow the right steps for connection, updates, account access, buffering, and sound.

If Max—or HBO Max, depending on the name shown on your Roku—won’t open, sign in, or play video, first check whether other Roku apps work. Then test the connection, update Max and Roku, and restart the device before considering a reinstall. If your subscription is billed through Roku, don’t try to remove the channel: Max says an active Roku-billed subscription may prevent removal.

First, work out whether the problem is Max, Roku, your network, or your account

Max’s current troubleshooting pages use “Max” and include a notice about the service becoming HBO Max. The name visible on your Roku can vary with the device, region, software, and branding rollout. Use the official Max listing shown in your Roku Channel Store; don’t install a second app unless the store itself lists one.

Before changing settings, run these checks:

  • Open another Roku app, such as YouTube or Netflix. If those fail too, start with the Roku connection and your network.
  • Try a different Max show or movie. If just one title fails, it may be a title-specific playback problem rather than a damaged installation.
  • Try Max on a phone, computer, or another supported device using the same account. If it fails there as well, investigate the account, subscription, provider activation, or a Max-side issue before reinstalling Roku’s channel.
  • Search for the title from Roku Home: select Home → Search, enter the show or movie name, and select its Max result. Max recommends trying another title and another supported device when troubleshooting an error.

Max’s guidance is to test another title and supported device; it does not establish whether the service is experiencing an outage at any particular moment. Max’s error troubleshooting guidance can help you distinguish a title or device issue.

What you find Where to focus next
Other Roku apps also fail Roku connection, router, or internet service
Other Roku apps work, but Max does not Max channel update, Roku software, app session, or compatibility
Max fails on every device with the same account Subscription, provider activation, account access, or a Max-side problem
Only one Max title fails That title’s playback; note its name and the exact error
Max works on another device using the same Wi-Fi Roku app, device software, model, or HDMI connection
Max buffers on multiple devices on the same network Network stability, congestion, or internet service

Check the Roku’s internet connection

  1. Press Home on the Roku remote.
  2. Open Settings → Network → Check connection.

If the check fails, reconnect to the correct Wi-Fi network or inspect the wired connection before troubleshooting Max itself. Max says HD streaming requires at least 5 Mbps download speed and recommends 50+ Mbps for 4K. These are service guidance figures, not guarantees: interference, congestion, latency, packet loss, and other household traffic can still interrupt playback even when a speed test reports a higher rate. See Max’s Roku troubleshooting steps and its buffering and network guidance.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

If the connection test passes but playback buffers, pause large downloads, gaming, video calls, and other streams. Move a Wi-Fi Roku closer to the router if practical, reduce obstructions, or test Ethernet if your device and setup support it. Compare Max on another device using the same network: if that device also buffers, focus on the network rather than the Roku app.

Update Max and Roku

Check for a Max channel update

  1. Go to the Roku Home screen and highlight Max (or HBO Max, if that is the name shown).
  2. Press the remote’s Star (*) button.
  3. Select Check for updates.

Check for a Roku software update

  1. Press Home.
  2. Select Settings → System → Software update → Check now.

Roku generally updates devices automatically, but a manual check can help after the device has been offline or a new channel was added. Roku’s update screen shows software/build information and the latest update date. Some models or software versions may label the menu System update rather than Software update. See Roku’s software update instructions.

Sign out of Max, then restart Roku

A sign-out and system restart refreshes the app session without removing the channel.

  1. Open Max, select the Settings gear (usually in the lower-left corner), and choose Sign Out.
  2. On a Roku streaming player, go to Settings → System → System restart.
  3. On a Roku TV, go to Settings → System → Power → System restart.
  4. Open Max and sign in again.

Menu wording can vary slightly by model and software version. Max documents these restart paths in its Roku troubleshooting instructions.

Power-cycle Roku if the menu restart did not help

Unplug the Roku streaming player or Roku TV from power, wait 20 seconds, plug it back in, and test Max. This is a power cycle, not a factory reset. Do not select Factory reset as a routine troubleshooting step: it erases device configuration and requires setup again, and it will not fix a provider activation or subscription problem. Max’s Roku instructions specify the 20-second wait.

Restart the modem and router when playback buffers

  1. Unplug the modem and router from power and wait 30 seconds.
  2. Reconnect the modem. Allow about one minute for internet service to return; actual reconnection time varies by equipment and provider.
  3. Reconnect the router and wait for it to reconnect.
  4. Restart Roku. On a Roku TV, use Settings → System → Power → System restart → Restart; on a streaming player, use Settings → System → System restart.
  5. Open Max and try playback again.

Check that power, Ethernet, and coaxial cables are secure. Max also recommends trying Ethernet where possible for buffering problems; its network troubleshooting guidance includes this restart sequence.

Reinstall Max only if your subscription billing allows it

Try removal and reinstallation only after updates and restarts. Max says its removal procedure applies when the subscription was not purchased through Roku. An active Roku-billed Max subscription may prevent the channel from being removed. If that is your billing arrangement, keep the channel installed and use the update, sign-out, and restart steps instead; do not cancel your subscription just to reinstall the app.

For a subscription not billed through Roku

  1. Highlight Max on the Roku Home screen and press Star (*).
  2. Select Remove app, then confirm with Remove.
  3. Restart the Roku.
  4. Open the Streaming Store, search for Max, and select Add app.
  5. Open Max and sign in.

Max lists Roku among its subscription providers. Identify who bills you before changing a plan or subscribing again; Max’s billing guidance explains provider billing, while its Roku troubleshooting page describes the removal exception.

How you get Max What to check
Direct Max subscription Sign in with the Max email address and password associated with the subscription.
Roku-billed subscription Use the Max account associated with the Roku purchase. Manage billing through Roku if access or billing is incorrect; do not assume a separate direct Max subscription exists.
TV, internet, or mobile provider Confirm the package includes Max and complete the provider activation or account-linking step if required.

For a “can’t verify subscription” message, check the provider package, provider login, and the Max email address linked to that provider. If the package includes Max but activation still fails, contact the provider. Provider access may require one-time activation before you can use the resulting Max account credentials on supported devices. If you see “provider account already in use,” Max says the provider may already be linked; sign in to the existing Max account rather than trying to link it again. See Max’s provider activation guidance.

Separate loading problems from buffering and poor picture quality

  • Stuck before playback: prioritize channel and Roku updates, signing out and back in, and checking the connection.
  • Repeated pauses during playback: check whether other devices on the same network buffer, reduce network activity, restart modem/router and Roku, and test Ethernet if available.
  • Video plays continuously but looks soft: available bandwidth may be limited or fluctuating. Max’s 5 Mbps HD and 50+ Mbps 4K figures are guidance, not a promise of a particular resolution on every device or title.
  • Only 4K playback has trouble: check network capacity and the display/HDMI setup. 4K availability depends on plan, title, device, and connected equipment; not every Roku model supports every resolution or audio format.

Fix sound problems or a black picture

First update Roku, restart it, and reseat the HDMI cable. If the Roku connects through a receiver or soundbar, connect it directly to the TV temporarily to isolate the intermediary, or try another HDMI port or cable.

If audio is the problem, test stereo: Home → Settings → Audio → Digital output format → Stereo. This is a diagnostic workaround, not necessarily a permanent setting; it can disable surround formats. Max says Dolby Atmos requires compatible HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 support throughout the chain, including the TV/display, Roku, receiver, cables, and adapters. See Max’s Roku audio guidance.

Check the Roku model if Max is missing or will not update

Open Settings → System → About to find the Roku model and software version, then run the software update check described above. If Roku reports that the device cannot receive current software, or Max is unavailable in the official Channel Store, compatibility may be the limiting factor. Current official guidance here does not establish a model-by-model minimum, so avoid relying on old compatibility lists. Give Roku or Max support the exact model number and software version. Don’t sideload apps or use unofficial installation methods.

Know which support team to contact

  • Contact Max for Max account access, title-specific errors, or an app error that persists after the Roku and network checks.
  • Contact Roku for device software, hardware instability, channel installation, or a Roku-billed subscription issue.
  • Contact your TV, internet, or mobile provider for package eligibility, provider sign-in, activation, or account-linking problems.

Before contacting support, collect the Roku model number and software/build version from Settings → System → About, the exact error text or code, the affected title, whether other Roku apps work, whether all Max titles fail, and whether Max works on another device. Include who bills the subscription and the results of the Roku connection test and another-device test. This lets support distinguish device, network, title, and entitlement problems without starting over.
