If YouTube keeps signing you out, first determine whether it happens on one browser or device or across your entire Google Account. One-device problems are usually caused by cookies, app data, extensions, or outdated software; account-wide sign-outs or unfamiliar activity require a Google Account security check.
If YouTube keeps signing you out, first determine whether the problem is limited to one browser, phone, TV, or streaming device—or whether it affects your Google Account everywhere. A sign-out on one device is usually a local cookie, app-data, extension, or software problem. Sign-outs across several devices, unfamiliar security alerts, or changed account details require an immediate Google Account security check.
Use this order of attack
- Test YouTube on another browser or device.
- Check whether cookies and site data are being blocked or automatically deleted.
- Delete only YouTube or Google site data, then sign in again.
- Test without extensions, ad blockers, privacy tools, or security software that cleans cookies.
- Update YouTube, your browser, and your device software.
- Review Google Account devices and security events if more than one device is affected.
- Use the device-specific steps for Android, a smart TV, a streaming device, or a game console.
1. Find out whether the problem is local or account-wide
Open YouTube on a different browser or device and sign in to the same Google Account. The result points to the likely cause:
| What happens | Most likely direction |
|---|---|
| YouTube signs you out only in one browser | Cookies, site-data settings, an extension, privacy software, or a damaged browser profile |
| YouTube signs you out only in one phone, TV, or streaming device | App data, outdated device software, a device-specific session, or a problem with that app |
| YouTube signs you out on several devices | Google Account security, a password or recovery-setting change, or an account-wide session issue |
| You see an unfamiliar device or security alert | Potential unauthorized access; review the account before continuing with ordinary troubleshooting |
Google says people normally remain signed in until they sign out. Repeated sign-outs therefore usually mean that the saved session is being removed, blocked, invalidated, or interrupted—not that YouTube has a universal rule requiring frequent sign-ins.

2. Check cookies before deleting anything
On a computer, YouTube uses browser cookies and site data to remember the session. If cookies are blocked, deleted whenever the browser closes, or removed by antivirus and privacy software, YouTube may ask you to sign in repeatedly.
Chrome on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebook
- Open Chrome’s menu and select Settings.
- Open Privacy and security.
- Review Third-party cookies and the site-data permissions available there.
- Make sure YouTube and the Google sign-in pages are not being prevented from saving the data needed for a session.
Chrome’s labels and cookie controls can change between versions. The important checks are whether cookies are blocked globally, whether YouTube or Google has a site-specific exception, and whether data is set to disappear when Chrome closes.
Also inspect browser-cleaning features in antivirus, privacy, and system-maintenance software. A setting such as delete cookies on exit, clear browsing data automatically, or remove tracking data can make the browser forget YouTube after every session.
3. Delete only YouTube and Google site data
Do not begin by deleting every cookie in the browser. A full cookie deletion can sign you out of other websites, remove saved preferences, and create unnecessary setup work.
In Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings, then use See all site data and permissions to search for YouTube and Google. Remove the relevant YouTube or Google entries, close and reopen Chrome, visit YouTube, and sign in to the intended account.
The exact menu wording may vary by Chrome release. You can also open YouTube, select the site-information icon beside the address, open the site’s settings, and remove its stored data when that option is available.
Clearing site data is a reset, not a way to preserve the current session. It can remove site preferences and will normally require you to sign in again. If you are signed in to Chrome, Google websites may behave differently depending on which categories of browsing data you selected; do not assume that clearing one type of data will sign you out—or keep you signed in—on every Google service.

4. Test extensions, ad blockers, and privacy tools
Extensions can interfere with cookies, redirects, sign-in pages, and YouTube itself. This is especially worth testing if the problem began after installing or updating an ad blocker, privacy extension, cookie manager, script blocker, or browser-security tool.
- Open a private or Incognito window.
- Visit YouTube and sign in.
- Use YouTube long enough to see whether the session survives navigation and a browser restart.
If YouTube stays signed in in a clean test, disable extensions in the normal browser one at a time. When the problem returns, check that extension’s YouTube and Google permissions or remove it.
Incognito is only a diagnostic test. Chrome blocks third-party cookies by default in Incognito, so a successful test does not prove that your normal cookie settings are correct. It can still help identify an extension or a damaged normal-browser profile. For a stronger comparison, create a clean browser profile with no extensions and test YouTube there.
5. Update the browser, YouTube, and device software
Use the latest available version of your compatible browser. On a phone, update the YouTube app through the device’s app store. Install available Android, iOS, smart-TV, streaming-device, or console system updates as well.
Updating is not a guarantee that every repeated sign-out is caused by an outdated version, but old app and system components can create compatibility or authentication problems. After updating, completely close YouTube or restart the device rather than merely returning to the home screen.

6. Android: sign in carefully and avoid removing the wrong account
On Android, open YouTube, tap your profile picture, select Sign in, and choose an existing Google Account or add the intended account. Confirm that you are selecting the account you actually want to use; YouTube can have access to several accounts on the same device.

Be careful with the option to remove an account from the YouTube app. Android’s YouTube guidance warns that removing the account from the device signs it out of other Google apps on that device, including services such as Gmail and Maps. It is not merely a YouTube-only reset.
If you want to watch privately without removing the Google Account from the phone, use YouTube’s Incognito option instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsClear YouTube or Chrome data on Android
For a browser-based problem, Chrome supports site-specific deletion from the page-information menu. Open the YouTube page, tap the information or lock icon beside the address, open the site settings, and delete the stored data if the option is shown. You can also use Chrome’s broader Delete browsing data control, but that may affect other websites and remove site settings.
For an app-specific problem, Android’s app settings may offer options such as Storage & cache > Clear cache or Clear storage. Menu names vary by Android manufacturer. Clear cache first; clearing storage is a more complete reset and will generally require another sign-in.
7. Check Google Account security when the symptoms are broader
Do not change your password solely because one browser forgets YouTube. First check local cookies, extensions, and app data when the issue is confined to one device.
Make account security the priority if any of these apply:
- You are being signed out on several phones, computers, TVs, or other devices.
- You received a sign-in or security alert you do not recognize.
- A device or session in your Google Account is unfamiliar.
- Your password, recovery phone, recovery email, or other security information changed unexpectedly.
- You cannot sign in even though the password that worked previously is no longer accepted.
Open your Google Account’s device-management or device-activity area. Review current and recent devices and sessions. Several sessions can legitimately appear for one physical device, so compare the device type, approximate location, and recent activity rather than assuming every duplicate entry is an attacker.

Sign out individual sessions you do not recognize. Review recent security events, password changes, recovery information, and third-party applications with account access.
If Google sends a security notification that you did not initiate, use the option indicating that it was not you, then change your Google Account password. Google’s compromised-account guidance also recommends removing unfamiliar devices and checking the account’s security settings.
If you cannot sign in or account information has been changed, stop repeating ordinary YouTube sign-in attempts and use Google’s account-recovery process. Use a device and location you commonly use for that account when possible, and follow the recovery prompts carefully.

8. Fix sign-outs on a smart TV, streaming device, or game console
TV and console sessions are separate from the browser session on your phone or computer. If YouTube signs you out only on one television or streaming device, concentrate on that device first.
- Open the YouTube app on the TV or console.
- Go to the account or profile page.
- Choose the signed-in account and select Sign out or Remove account.
- Restart the device, update its system software and YouTube app, then sign in again.
If the device is unavailable, use your Google Account’s device-activity controls to sign out its session. YouTube also provides a way to remove YouTube-on-TV access from Google Account permissions; doing so signs the account out of devices using the YouTube on TV app.
On shared equipment, use YouTube’s account-lock feature when the device supports it. It creates a four-digit code for that specific smart TV, streaming device, or game console and helps prevent other household users from opening your account. It is not a replacement for your Google Account password.
If a phone is linked to the TV
If your phone automatically controls or links to the television, unlink the device from the YouTube app or from the TV’s YouTube settings. Unlinking removes the existing linked-device relationship; you will need a new code to link the phone again.

9. Know when to escalate
Contact Google Account recovery or security support when:
- you see unfamiliar devices or security events;
- your password or recovery details changed without your permission;
- you receive an unrecognized Google security notification;
- you cannot sign in after repeated attempts; or
- you suspect someone else has access to the account.
Use device or app support when:
- the issue affects only one TV, phone, browser, streaming device, or console;
- you have checked account security;
- site data and app data have been reset;
- extensions and privacy software have been tested; and
- the browser, YouTube app, and device software are current.
For a device-only problem, restart or reboot the equipment, reinstall YouTube if necessary, and check the manufacturer’s software-update and app-permission controls. If the problem continues after those steps, support for that specific device is more appropriate than repeatedly changing your Google password.
Prevention tips
- Keep the browser, YouTube app, and device operating system updated.
- Review cookie and site-data cleanup rules after installing privacy or antivirus software.
- Allow YouTube and Google to save the site data needed for sign-in.
- Use a separate browser profile if work, school, or privacy extensions interfere with personal YouTube.
- On shared TVs, enable the YouTube account lock where supported and sign out when appropriate.
- Review Google Account devices and security events periodically.
- Do not share your Google Account password with anyone using a shared TV or console.
What not to assume
A repeated YouTube sign-out does not automatically prove that your account was hacked. A one-browser or one-device failure is often caused by local session data being blocked or erased. Conversely, repeatedly signing back in without checking unfamiliar devices, security alerts, or changed account information is unsafe. Use the scope of the problem and the account-security evidence to choose the right response.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I change my Google password if YouTube keeps signing me out?
Usually, no. If YouTube forgets your session only in one browser or device, check cookies, site-data deletion, extensions, app data, and updates first. Change your password and review account devices when sign-outs happen across multiple devices or you see unfamiliar activity.
Which cookie settings should I check for YouTube?
Yes. Open Chrome settings, go to Privacy and security and the site-data permissions area, then check that YouTube and Google are allowed to save cookies and site data. Also look for browser, antivirus, or privacy-tool settings that delete cookies when the browser closes.

Will clearing cookies sign me out of YouTube?
Deleting only YouTube and Google site data is more targeted. A full cookie deletion can sign you out of many websites and remove saved preferences. Either method can require you to sign in again.
Will removing my YouTube account from Android affect Gmail?
On Android, removing a Google Account from YouTube can sign that account out of other Google apps on the phone, including Gmail and Maps. Use YouTube’s Incognito option if you want private viewing without removing the device account.
How do I sign out of YouTube on a TV I no longer have?
Use your Google Account device-activity controls to review or sign out the TV or streaming device. You can also remove YouTube-on-TV access from Google Account permissions, which signs the account out of devices using the YouTube on TV app.
The Bottom Line
The fastest reliable fix is to isolate the scope: repair cookies, site data, extensions, and app software when YouTube forgets you on one device; review Google Account sessions, security events, and recovery details when it happens everywhere or unfamiliar activity appears.
