What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start by finding out which part failed: the HTTP input, FFmpeg’s processing, YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingest, or the FFmpeg process itself. The reconnect flags often suggested for FFmpeg apply to HTTP inputs; they do not universally retry a failed YouTube output connection or restart an exited process. The right fix depends on the failure stage, the input protocol, and what the log says.
Find where the stream is failing
Before changing flags, capture the full FFmpeg command and a timestamped log from startup through the interruption. Note the input protocol (for example, HTTP(S), RTSP, or a local file), whether the source URL is temporary, and whether FFmpeg remains running, exits with an error, or reports a successful exit. Keep the YouTube stream key private: redact it from logs and shared command examples.
Then classify the failure:
- Input failure: FFmpeg can no longer read the source. HTTP reconnect options may help if that input uses HTTP(S); they are not general-purpose options for every protocol.
- Processing failure: The input is still arriving, but decoding, encoding, or another processing step is failing. A network reconnect flag will not fix a codec, resource, or filter error.
- YouTube output failure: FFmpeg continues reading the source, but cannot send the stream to YouTube. Check the ingest URL, stream key, outbound connection, encoder health, and YouTube Live Control Room messages.
- Process exit: FFmpeg has stopped. Input reconnect options cannot revive a process that is no longer running; first determine why it exited, then decide whether and how an external supervisor should restart it.
The word “reconnect” in an error message is not enough to identify the cause. The log’s timing and surrounding messages, together with the input protocol and process state, are more useful evidence.
Use FFmpeg reconnect options only for the input they govern
FFmpeg documents the reconnect controls discussed here for its HTTP protocol. For an HTTP input that disconnects before it reaches EOF, a common starting point is -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1. Put these input options before the -i they apply to.

ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1 -i "HTTP_INPUT_URL" [output options] "OUTPUT"
This is an illustrative option-placement pattern, not a complete production command or a guarantee of continuous operation. Replace the placeholders with your actual input and output configuration; do not publish a real stream key.
What the three flags change
-reconnect 1asks the HTTP protocol handler to reconnect after a disconnect before EOF.-reconnect_streamed 1enables reconnect behavior for streamed or non-seekable HTTP sources.-reconnect_at_eof 1treats EOF as an error so FFmpeg can request the source again. Use it only when reaching EOF should mean “request the endless live source again.” For a finite file or a source where EOF is a legitimate end, this can cause unwanted repetition or requests.
These options do not turn RTMP/RTMPS output into a universally retrying connection, and they do not restart FFmpeg after the process exits. If the input is RTSP, a local file, or another non-HTTP protocol, HTTP flags may not apply.

Set a deliberate retry window
Reconnect behavior is not the same as retrying forever. FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol also has separate controls for network errors and HTTP status responses. Choose retry counts and delay limits for the failure you actually see, and decide how long a source is allowed to be unavailable before the stream should stop or be handled another way. An expired or revoked URL will not become valid just because it is retried.
Available options and defaults can vary with the installed FFmpeg version and build. Check that build’s HTTP help before relying on a flag or its default:

ffmpeg -h protocol=http
Compare the output with FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation. Do not assume a command copied from a different version has the same behavior.
If the input stays up but YouTube disconnects
When FFmpeg is still reading its source, investigate the output leg rather than adding HTTP input flags. Verify that the YouTube ingest URL and stream key are the ones for the intended live event, that the key has not been replaced, and that the outgoing connection is stable. Read the specific stream-health warning in YouTube Live Control Room; it can help distinguish an ingest problem from encoder settings or a rights interruption.

Match the encoder to YouTube’s current guidance
Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance to select supported codecs and a bitrate appropriate to your output resolution. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval not exceeding four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular connection or configuration will stay online.
For network capacity, YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% bandwidth room. That is recommended headroom, not a measured guarantee of stability. Check sustained upload capacity under the conditions in which the stream will run, rather than relying only on a best-case speed test. YouTube also recommends testing the stream, monitoring its health, and testing failover.

Do not confuse output retries with input retries
If the HTTP source remains healthy while YouTube ingest fails, changing HTTP input reconnect settings targets the wrong leg. Check the output URL and key, network route, and Live Control Room status first. A terminated FFmpeg process needs a separate recovery policy; choose one that accounts for why the process stopped and avoids repeated restarts that cannot fix the underlying fault.

| What you see | Likely area to investigate | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP input disconnects, but FFmpeg stays running | HTTP source connection or retry behavior | Confirm the input is HTTP(S), check the exact HTTP error, and review the reconnect and retry controls available in ffmpeg -h protocol=http. |
| HTTP input returns an authorization or not-found response | Expired, invalid, or inaccessible source URL | Check whether the URL is temporary, whether its access has changed, and whether the source provider requires a refreshed link. More retries do not fix an invalid URL. |
| Input continues, but YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health issue | Output configuration, encoder settings, or outbound network | Check the RTMP/RTMPS URL and private stream key, compare the encoder configuration with YouTube’s current guidance, and inspect the Live Control Room message. |
| FFmpeg exits and no longer writes to the log | Process termination or fatal error | Inspect the final log lines and the environment for the exit cause. Only after addressing that cause should you select an external supervisor and a safe restart policy. |
| YouTube interrupts or restricts the live stream while FFmpeg is sending | Third-party content matching or rights status | Review YouTube’s notice and your rights for the music. If a licensed rights holder uses Content ID, YouTube describes allowlisting as a way to prevent matching interruptions for eligible content. |
| A long event is not available as one complete archive | YouTube’s archive-duration guidance | Plan recording and retention separately if a complete copy matters. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise a single uninterrupted full archive for a longer event. |
YouTube explains live-content matching, possible interruptions, and allowlisting for licensed third-party content in its copyright guidance for live streams. FFmpeg reconnect settings cannot grant music rights, prevent a Content ID match, or override a platform restriction. For an Indian music channel, verify that the music is cleared for the planned use and that any required rights-holder arrangements are in place; this article does not determine what a particular track’s licence permits.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the recurring problem is keeping a pre-recorded music stream running when your computer or home connection is unavailable, StreamNeo is a cloud option for YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or send to platforms other than YouTube.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the stream to continue.
- Each slot streams the uploaded quality as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. This does not resolve copyright restrictions, a bad source file, or a stream key problem.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, plus 24/7 looping, playlists, and StreamNeo team support. The same product is included across plans; only the billing period changes. See StreamNeo for details. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live: start the free day.
