Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For an FFmpeg stream publishing to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, adding HTTP -reconnect options is not a general fix for an output connection that drops. FFmpeg documents those options for HTTP; its documented RTMP output recovery pattern uses the FIFO muxer with -attempt_recovery 1 and -recovery_wait_time 1. That pattern can attempt recovery while FFmpeg is still running, but it does not guarantee YouTube will accept every reconnect or preserve the same live-event state. Your FFmpeg build, command, interruption, and YouTube stream state all matter.
Why a loop does not reconnect the stream
A loop repeats input content. It does not, by itself, re-establish a failed publishing connection. Treat the source and destination as separate parts of the workflow: the input supplies video and audio, while the output connection sends them to YouTube.
FFmpeg’s reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and related options are documented under its HTTP protocol options. They concern HTTP connections or streams, not a universal RTMP/RTMPS output reconnect switch. If your source is an HTTP stream, an HTTP reconnect option may help that input, depending on option placement and your installed build; it still does not establish recovery of the separate RTMP(S) output.
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation provides a distinct output-side recovery example for streaming to an RTMP server during a temporary network outage. The example attempts recovery every second indefinitely while processing continues. “Indefinitely” describes the attempts in the documented example, not guaranteed recovery or acceptance by YouTube.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Try the documented FIFO recovery pattern
Use this as a pattern to adapt, not a drop-in command. The destination shown is a placeholder from FFmpeg’s documentation; replace it with the current endpoint for your YouTube stream.
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
-attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a
rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
Adapt the command to your setup
- Replace
INPUTwith your source and adjust-mapoptions to match the streams it contains. The example maps one video and one audio stream. - Use the codecs and output format appropriate for your existing workflow. The example specifies H.264 video, AAC audio, and FLV inside the FIFO muxer.
- Replace the placeholder destination with the correct YouTube ingest URL and provide the stream key using your chosen, secure method. Do not paste a real key into shared logs or examples.
- Check that your installed FFmpeg build recognizes the FIFO muxer and these options. Confirm availability using the documentation or help for that build before relying on the pattern.
Understand the recovery trade-off
-attempt_recovery 1 enables recovery attempts in the documented pattern, while -recovery_wait_time 1 sets the wait between attempts to one second. The example also uses -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1; packet dropping is part of its behavior, not a guarantee of uninterrupted output or a promise that no content will be lost during an outage. Adapt and test the pattern against your source, network, and YouTube stream rather than assuming it suits every broadcast.

Check the YouTube endpoint and stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and copy the current stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s RTMPS help page describes this workflow.
- Confirm that the URL uses the protocol you intend to use. If publishing over RTMPS, make sure your FFmpeg build supports it and that the endpoint uses
rtmps. - If you see an SSL error, YouTube advises checking the protocol and server URL; when the URL is otherwise correct, specifying port 443 may help. For a connection timeout, check the server URL and protocol and confirm encoder RTMPS support.
- Use the endpoint shown for your stream, not FFmpeg’s documentation placeholder. Treat the key as a credential and redact it from logs or examples you share.
Diagnose the failure before changing several settings
- Save the evidence. Record the FFmpeg version and build information, the full command with the key redacted, and log lines immediately before and after the drop.
- Check whether FFmpeg is still running. Note whether it continues processing, reports an output or muxer error, or exits. FFmpeg treats command-line outputs as URLs; the FIFO recovery example addresses recovery in the output path. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
- Identify which leg failed. Determine whether the input stopped, the encoder or muxer failed, or the output connection dropped. Repeating the input does not demonstrate that the destination connection recovered.
- Compare with YouTube’s status. Check the stream’s status or preview in Live Control Room and compare it with the FFmpeg log around the same time.
- Test deliberately. If you need recovery for an important broadcast, test a controlled interruption and observe both the process and YouTube’s stream status before relying on it. This is a diagnostic precaution, not a guarantee of the result.
Choose the recovery layer that matches the failure
| Layer | What it addresses | When it fits | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg FIFO muxer recovery | Attempts to recover the RTMP output during temporary failures while FFmpeg continues processing. | Use the documented pattern as a starting point when the process remains alive and the output connection has failed. | Build compatibility, buffering and packet-drop behavior, network conditions, and YouTube’s acceptance affect observed results; the documentation is not a guarantee. |
| Process supervisor or service manager | Can relaunch FFmpeg after the process exits, if configured to do so. | Consider it when logs show FFmpeg terminates and automatic relaunch is desired. | It cannot fix a wrong endpoint or key, unsupported protocol, or persistent network fault. The official documentation cited here does not endorse a particular supervisor or establish behavior for a specific deployment. |
A muxer recovery attempt applies while FFmpeg is operating; it is not the same as restarting an exited process. Diagnose which situation you have before adding a restart mechanism.
